Pokemon battles are ethical, N can suck it

I'm sure everyone has seen jokes about how pokemon is about kidnapping animals and forcing them into cockfights, and most of them are just jokes and perfectly funny, but just like the beauty and the beast is about Stockholm syndrome joke, some people seem to actually take it seriously? So here's a little common sense.

Pokemon canonically will not go with a trainer unless they want to. No matter how much you "beat them into submission," because that's not what's happening. What's happening is you are proving your worth as a trainer. You are showing the pokemon how strong your pokemon are, and how strong they can become if they travel with you.

Because let's face it, pokemon love to fight. In the newer games as you become more affectionate with your pokemon and can learn to read their moods, appearing as the little text boxes before battles, there's a lot of "mudkip looks excited" and "raichu is hoping you'll come up with a great strategy."

Now it's easy to see a pokemon like yamper and see it as a dog, just a dumb animal that doesn't know what you're making it do-though I would argue pokemon aren't even animals, they're magical animals, which have a different level of intelligence etc, as we see some mentions to regular animals in both the anime and manga-but what about pokemon like gardevoir or mewtwo? I think what's key is to stop thinking that you are a pet owner and your pokemon are your pets, and start thinking of yourself as a coach, and they are your team. A coach doesn't force their wrestlers to fight, they just help them bring out their full potential. Even though wrestling is dangerous and can seriously hurt you, wrestlers still enjoy doing it. Pokemon is similar. I wouldn't say every pokemon is as smart as a human (though a good chunk of them are), but at the very least they're smart enough to understand that you can train them and help them achieve the strength they desire. Thanks for coming to my ted talk
