Something I really miss about the early generations is the snappiness.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 07:06 AM PDT

Let me explain. Gen 3 has super quick cutscenes and dialogue, for example. Then go play OR/AS. Lots of unnecessary slow camera angles and frozen shots for GF to show off their really basic animations. It feels super self-congratulatory and just ends up slowing everything down as a result.

And then go forwards to Gen 7. Same shit dialed up to 11. Those first few hours feel like a sluggish fever dream, with you getting very little agency over your own actions because they just really want you to see Lillie's facial expressions for 20 seconds straight. Haven't played Gen 8 yet (and likely won't), but I'd imagine it's the same deal.

    Pokemon XY - A Retrospective

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 05:57 AM PDT

It's hard to believe it's been more than 7 years since Pokemon XY released... time sure does fly.

While waiting for Pokemon Sword and Shields DLC update I decided to revisit Pokemon Y to see how it had aged and what I experienced really surprised me. For a lot of people the most divisive games in the series are Black and White, which received a tremendous amount of dislike but in recent years have really grown to be regarded as some of the best in the franchise. Pokemon XY feels very similar to me in that regard, there is a lot about the game I adore but also a lot that misses the mark.

Kalos as a region in my personal opinion, is fantastic. Going through this region, rich in NPC's and some amazing set pieces if there's one thing I can Kalos credit for it's always got something going on and places to explore. The region has a ton of history involving the war and some interesting mysteries that linger throughout such as our infamous ghost girl of Lumiose and the abandoned Power Plant. Kalos is the last game in the series to use HM's but they use them in a non intrusive way I had a great time with it, it feels like any time you use a HM in XY it always leads to some good rewards. If there's one thing I can say Kalos is not a weak region I just kind of wish they'd done more to flesh it out.

The story is probably the weirdest aspect of the game for me because there's a lot about it I like and I a lot I don't. For example I love the idea of having a group of characters help make your journey feel more like an adventure I feel XY's tried to introduce too many friendly characters to really flesh any of them out and any attempt they do make feels very weak (with 1 exception) I'll get to shortly. Team Flare are a joke and yet oddly, I can sort of understand Lysandres motives to essentially reset the board and prevent conflict (it feels oddly Thanos) and there's even a moment where he feels compassion for what his end goals mean for the Pokemon themselves and had there been more moments like this that were fleshed out this'd probably be my favourite entry in the series. Then we have AZ who was also... there and then... not but the thing that really irks the hell out of this game is the fact it's best character... is locked behind the post-game...

    Emma.

I won't spoil the story but if you've not played the Looker sidequests in the Post-Game... you are missing out big time. It reads and plays like a super hero origin story we have this orphaned girl wanting to repay looker for being kind to her but to do that she takes on pretty shady experiment involving Team Flare Scientist Xerosic and it escalates like crazy for some emotional pay off between Emma and Looker. What's baffling is why this was part of the post-game... this EASILY could've been introduced to the main story to make Team Flare and Emma seem like a genuine threat while giving some great writing. At the end of the arc Emma has this level of maturity that makes me think that if we ever return to Kalos she will be the champion. She wants to protect Kalos.

As for the gameplay XY has so much content that I can't help but love wondering about in Kalos, more Pokemon than any region I can remember, a ton of places to train and explore and awesome horde battles to accomodate that. I love the Battle Chateau as well a genuine battle facility which let's you EXP train and get a nice chunk of change, what really throws this off though is how early most of this is available to you... these new streamlined tools I think are largest factor as to why XY is so easy. In terms of actually catching Pokemon I think XY may actually be my favourite, every route in the game is bursting with unique Pokemon and some of them are hard to find or get but if ever you want to test a Professor Oak Challenge THIS is the game you should be playing.

Overall Pokemon XY for me, was a great time. It was not challenging but at the same time the game throws me so much content that I had no issue with that, it's a game you can lose hours in very easily and has a ton replay value because of it. However one thing I will also say is that I think Pokemon XY more than any other entry in the series has the potential to be improved if ever we get a remake or a sequel I really hope GF will take these notes in mind maybe distribute the content a little more sparingly so that the game isn't so easy and really make use of the best aspects of the story to make Kalos feel richer and use their locales like the power plant.

I really hope that at the end of the day we do an XY successor because there's so much here I like and it's so sad to see it undercut by a bunch of small issues.

EDIT: Another thing I love was the Friend Safari, the idea of getting goodies based on who you interact with and randomising them... I LOVE that it encouraged to make friends online with the best infastructure the PSS that we've ever had.

That's my opinion but what do you guys think?

Ash Ketchum's Best Team for Pokémon World Championship

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 06:34 AM PDT

So Ash Ketchum has entered the Pokémon World Championship. This is exactly the time when he should be letting go of his old tradition and choose his best six Pokémon - his ultimate team - because this is no time to be fooling around. He will be facing the best in the world and he will need his best pokemons.

According to me this should be his team :-

    1) Pikachu - This little electric mouse is first name on the team sheet and deservedly. He has traveled with Ash through every region he has been to and has the most experience. And let's be honest, ash isn't gonna leave him out.

    2) Gengar - Ash has just recently caught this gengar in the new series and I have absolutely no doubts that this don will make the team. His first two battles were enough to show me that this little poltergeist can wreck shit. You would also agree on this if you've watched the recent episodes. A Gengarite will turn him into a complete monster.

    3) Lycanroc - This Wolf is probably Ash's best Alola pokemon, and for good reason. Ash has the only Dusk Forme Lycanroc in existence and we all know how strong it is. All said, he deserves a spot on this team.

    4) Charizard - Anyone who has watched the anime will know that this beast is a powerhouse. It has defeated a freaking legendary like articuno. This thing has raw power and his bond with ash is very strong. There's no way Ash will leave him out. Just give this guy a Charizardite and watch him destroy opponents.

    5) Greninja - Who can forget this dude. This pokemon made us love the XYZ anime. This thing is so powerful that it even gave Alain's Charizard a run for it's money and went head-to-head with Diantha's Mega Gardevoir. Ash-Greninja will easily be the most important member of this team and i really hope it makes a return soon. Ash's Sceptile is pretty awesome too, so he can fill in until Greninja returns.

    6) Dragonite - This spot is a very tricky one. Even though the anime hasn't shown much of it till now, I decided to go with Ash's Dragonite, because it's very promising (It was pretty impressive in that one battle against Golurk) and it's a freakin pseudo legendary. This would've been an absolute no-brainer only if Ash evolved his Gible into a Garchomp (Sigh😌).

Honourable Mentions - Infernape(Really strong pokemon, but just not more than charizard), Snorlax, Krookodile and Goodra (Sadly, released😔)

Well there goes 5 hours of my life I’m never getting back

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 10:42 AM PDT

So I've been playing Ultra Sun for the past week or so, and've gotten a good portion of the game completed. I was playing today and accomplished a lot. Got some TMs, evolved a couple members of my team, and got to Route 15. But the cherry on top is that when I went to save, my dumbass brain went on autopilot and turned off the game. Without saving.

My frustration is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.

Can we solve the Pokemon's greatest Mystery?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 08:12 AM PDT

As a quick primer I'm going to be using both the anime and the games as basis for this theory.

Since the dawn of Pokemonkind there's been a plethora of mysteries throughout the Pokemon Universe. What caused the great fire Ecruteak City? Why happened to the humans in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Universe? Why does Kalos have a train that doesn't go anywhere? However one Mystery has lingered throughout the franchise since near it's beginning and I believe that this mystery holds the key to many questions including the creation of the Pokemon Universe itself. The answer to this mystery is...

    Unown

First off the basics. Unown is a Pokemon with many different forms all corresponding to different letters of the Alphabet and one of the age old wonders of the Pokemon World is what came first Human Language or Unown? And make no mistake, it's definitely the latter. Generally speaking Unown is a Pokemon that's usually only found in Ancient Ruins or via means that aren't accessible to the every day human (PokeRadar, MirageSpots etc) and it's very rare to find them with other Pokemon in their environment.

The most important thing to note about Unown is it's ability to create Pokemon something we see it do not just in the Shin-Joh ruins where it create a Space-Time deity but also in the 3rd Pokemon Movie where Unown creates various Pokemon based on the memories of Molly Hale and these Pokemon are capable of taking physical form and causing harm. And it's not just Pokemon we see Unknown change the physical appearance of Molly and her own home. We've also seen in both anime, movies and the games that the majority of Unown exist within their own dimension and it's only when they're together that they seem to have this power.

As I'm sure most people know by now the Ruins of Alph seems to have ancient writing based on the language of Unown and this is what it says (as of HeartGold & SoulSilver as this text is slightly different in Pokemon Crystal).

"Our clan engraved words in this place

Our clan created Pokémon statue outside

We humans need to walk with them. We leave here for the sake of them

They possess power to sense with mind and reject outside".

To me, this text implies a few things first among which is that Unown was worshipped by an early settlement of humans so much so that these humans erected a statue as tribute. However, what's also suggested is that Unown rejected these humans and chose to live in seclusion from them because it sensed something perhaps fear of what these human's would do with it's power. Either way it caused the humans to depart.

The last thing to mention about the Ruins of Alph is that while you are there if you have a Radio Card you can hear a unique sounds on the radio. Among which is the Melody of the Azure Flute which leads us to Sinnoh and the Solaceon Ruins where this text can be found.

    "Friendship,

    All Lives, Touch Other Lives.

    To Create Something Anew

    and Alive."

This maybe a stretch but I think this maybe an allusion to Unown's powers and how if they're close together they have the ability to create anything be it realities, objects or even Pokemon. My theory is that Unown's power is what created the Pokemon World and in fact Arceus's egg itself as we've seen they can span multiple different dimensions. I believe just like Dialga and Palkia these Pokemon didn't create time and space they were born into a universe where they could govern it.

Is this a good theory? Probably not but it took so long to write :'(

Just a note from a commenter of the original theory.

"Unowns are the code that composes all the Pokémon Universe, think of like the Pokémon Universe is a simulation and the Unowns are the code."
