Posted: 17 Oct 2020 06:03 PM PDT TL;DR At the bottom. My wife doesn't really care for gaming at all, so it came as a big surprise that she loved not only watching me play, but also playing BOTW herself. It's the only game she really cares for (besides animal crossing) and after taking a several month hiatus from BOTW after beating Ganon, she had the urge to play it again, so we're trying to pretty much 100% and finish off some DLC. While playing again, we realized that there are entire areas that we had completely missed and every hour found ourselves saying something along the lines of "wait, what is this? Have we been here before?" That sense of wonder and exploration is something that I feel like the Pokémon games are desperately missing and have not had in several years. The hand-holdy nature of the SwSh is so frustrating too, especially as a veteran player and I know this is a common complaint, but I often feel that the Pokémon community excuses wayyy more BS than any other gaming community does. Making a game brain numbingly easy for the sake of accessibility is not excusable and is just poor game design. BOTW is not an "easy" game, but its designed in a way that I can run in head on (to the frustration of my wife) and try to fight the monsters that way, where my wife who isn't as skilled at combat, can standoff from a distance and fling bombs until they eventually die. Both achieve the goal, but the design of the game allows flexibility. Pokémon, by its nature is game that has a different host of ways to tackle a challenge seeing as there is an exponential combination of Pokémon you can have on your team and then throw in the factor of abilities, attacks and items you can use. They provide more than enough resources to take on any challenge, but then nerf the hell out of the opponents by giving them low levels and uncompetitive move sets, items. Don't even get me started on the always on EXP share. Give your audience some credit. Present us with a challenge that feels gratifying to overcome. Some people will tackle it with competitive move sets while other players who aren't as framiliar may just spam healing items while they chip away at the opponent, but make it memorable. Nothing about the newest gym challenges stand out to me and most of my experience with SwSh came down to "Click Pyroball". I'm not just trying to dump on Pokémon/game freak. I love Pokémon. It's such an integral part of my childhood, but I feel like it's lost any of the magic/mystery of the previous games. Some of that mystery was accidental, the missingno hacks and glitches added an un-intentional depth to the game making you wonder what else there was to discover, but I mean, even things in later generations gave that feeling. I remember Running into Raikou in a random encounter in Pokémon Crystal. The music/animation changed and I had no idea what was happening, then BAM, legendary Pokémon I had never seen before. It blew my freaking mind, but I don't think the state of the current gen games can offer anything close to that feeling. Something that just made me really think about this was the other night, my wife and I found a section in BOTW called "the lost temple" or something like that. IT was this HUGE structure built into a canyon that we some how completely missed. There were hard enemies inside and something cool to find at the end, but I couldn't help but feel like "Man, this would be the perfect place to encounter Regi-rock". I could see you having to work through some puzzles with your Pokémon to get through, plus throwing in some Powerful Pokémon that have low catch rates and you can't escape from for added difficulty and you would have a compelling area worth exploring with some actual mysteries and something that could create lasting memories. The wild areas in SwSh are a start in that direction, but fall short with their crappy textures and environmental design, the pop in and lack of anything meaningful to actually find there. Like, "oh if you turn your camera, you might find a spot with a leaf stone. Oh boy!". I could rant like this for hours with all my ideas, but at the end of the day it comes down to Game Freak stepping it up or Nintendo stepping in with the resources needed to pump out a quality game if they're requiring a new game to come out every year. You can't hide behind "The DS hardware is holding us back". You are now charging $60 plus DLC's and will be compared to the other games doing the same on the same platform. TL;DR - Pokémon suffers from a lot of bad/lazy design decisions and when compared to games in the same caliber, Pokémon's flaws and potential are highlighted Edit: TO CLARIFY - I'm not saying Pokémon needs to be on the same scale as BOTW or needs to be a Pokemon skinned clone. I just mean playing an amazing game that cost the same price on the same console as SwSh highlighted for me just how shallow of an experience SwSh is. Mix that with how the newer games also fall short of even other Pokémon games all while knowing that Pokemon as a franchise makes more money than any other franchise in the world, just really makes me expect more from the games and from Game Freak. I don't wish for Pokemon to fail. I want to enjoy the franchise that I've probably put more hours into than any other game (except maybe Destiny). [link] [comments] |
It's Been 14 Years. Give Him What He Deserves. Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:26 AM PDT It's been over a decade. Four generations have passed. Countless new, powerful Pokemon have been conceptualized and implemented. The very idea of strength has been redefined time and time again. And now, with the Crown Tundra within our grasp, it's time to lock hands in a prayer circle, my brothers and sisters. It's time to cling together against the storm. It's time to put all of our faith and hope into a single dream, and that dream is for Regigigas to finally have a different ability. We, as a society, have evolved past the need to acknowledge the lore reasons Regigigas would have Slow Start. We no longer need to say it was to balance him, for even if it was, it's hardly the case now. We don't have to hold on to Slow Start for nostalgic reasons, for we should prefer to have good things in the present than look back fondly at garbage. This is the first time since Sinnoh that Regigigas has mattered. Two new Regis have been introduced, and the massive mon maker is relevant once again. It's the perfect time to make him the powerful, worthwhile leader of the largest legendary group in the game. "But abilities like Truant are still the sa-" If I have to explain why not moving every other turn is a far cry from being a bad Pokemon for five entire turns upon each switch in, you don't deserve full power Regigigas. Join me, comrades. This is the time. This is his time. This is our time. Regigigas will no longer have Slow Start*, and there will be everlasting peace throughout the land. Until they change it back for Sinnog remakes. *or like at least fucking change how it works like oh my god, let it be like the Rest time or something and keep the count on switch out, or at least reduce it from FIVE TURNS, or be absolutely vicious and give the guy Skill Swap, but come on now, enough is enough, let him be strong, he's a legendary got dangit [link] [comments] |
I'm sick of getting "advertisements" in wonder trade Posted: 18 Oct 2020 01:30 AM PDT As much as i like getting a lvl 100 shiny pokemon, it's immediately ruined for me when it's named after a website or facebook group who sells rare max iv pokemon. This means that if i want to use this free powerhouse i have to advertise these scummy black markets cause i can't rename it again. I understand the model but pokemon should be companions, not ads you can't skip. [link] [comments] |
Were the Island Trials in gen 7 really as game changing as people make them out to be? Posted: 18 Oct 2020 06:23 AM PDT Around the launch of Sun and Moon, critics and fans alike praised the Alola games for the innovative replacement for gyms the games sported. I'm with everyone when they said Totem pokemon were great: they had diverse movesets and the 1 v 2 format added an extra layer of challenge. That's all great but I feel the trials themselves got a lot of undue praise. Like can anyone tell me how fire type trial is functionally any different from the Lumiose City gym puzzle or how the normal and grass type trial "challenge series traditions in fun and unique ways"? It's no surprise GameFreak rests on their laurels when the most moderate adjustments to the status quo are treated as revolutionary new additions to the series. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Oct 2020 01:50 AM PDT As we are now getting to a point where it looks like game freak/Nintendo would like to release a game more frequently as well as the Pokemon total number reaching quite a high number. I would like to know what the thoughts of the community would be if a new game was released but no new Pokemon were announced, just a mixture of previously 'discovered'. For me I wouldn't be against it as less time would be needed on new designs and more time put in to the story, the region and the world building. Maybe as an exception new legendaries but would love to hear thoughts on this or any amendments you would like. [link] [comments] |
help me decide which of these games i should get Posted: 18 Oct 2020 08:04 AM PDT I've finished sword, sun, and I own a copy of let's go eevee (which i never ended up finishing). Personally, I liked sun the most out of these games, but it could just be biases because it was my first pokemon game. Sword felt like it was a bit shallow and relied on having an area to catch most pokemon, not to mention it felt less interactive and there was less "sidequests" (or whatever.) I did like it, just not as much as sun. Sun felt different. I did play leafgreen on an emulator when I was like 8, so it was a surprise to see what happened in Alola. I liked the general flow and vibe of the game. I think that the pokemon in that game was a good set. so i'm just a little bit indecisive about my choices. A few games have caught my eye, please help decide based off of the information presented. if there's any other games you would recommend, please comment. I'd rather not go virtual console because I like seeing my games physically. [link] [comments] |
Pokemon Ranger: shadows of Almia Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:26 AM PDT I am currently playing through this game and it is such a good game! The graphics are pretty good and the story overall is well done with team Dim Sun as some very good villians and the boss fights are on some other levels! The music has got to be one of my favorite parts and really expands on the the game! [link] [comments] |
Signature Items in Crown Tundra Posted: 18 Oct 2020 09:28 AM PDT One thing I've noticed that no one discusses when it comes to the crown tundra is Signature Items. Things like the Lustrous Orb or the Soul Dew for Palkia and the Latis respectively. An NPC like the one in stow-on-side that gives you the fusion items, but lives in the CT and gives Signature items The item is a reward for completing the raid in the Dynamax Adventures Which do you think is most likely? Do you predict some kind of third option? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Oct 2020 07:29 AM PDT Not going to be too long of a rant. But after recently playing some incredible fan made games and romhacks (Insurgence/Reborn/the Drayano roms) it has become GLARINGLY obvious how little effort Gamefreak has put into recent titles of the main series pokemom games. While I understand the graphics in something like SW/SH (despite not even being anywhere near the consoles standards, see: breath of the wild) take a good amount of time to produce, comparing gen 8 to something like Insurgence is kind of embarrassing. Insurgence brought an incredibly unique take on pokemon in the form of Delta Pokemon (different typing/sprites/movesets of pokemon that already exist i.e. Ghost/Dragon Charizard) where GameFreak brought the incredibly boring Dynamax. Insurgence has a fully fleshed out story on par with most JRGPs, the MUCH asked for difficulty levels you can change at any point in the game and so much more. Pokemon Reborn also has an in depth story and 18 gym badges. Comparing these masterpieces that were developed by only a handful of people just highlights how lazy GameFreak is. Anywho that's it [link] [comments] |
Anyone know what this card is? Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:19 AM PDT I'm getting rid of all my cards and want to sell the expensive ones outside of a big lot. Anyone know what this card is? I can't seem to find anything on it. Thanks [link] [comments] |
I need help for my Platinum team. Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:59 AM PDT I am planning on playing Pokémon Platinum for the first time and my current planned team is; Empoleon, Houndoom, Staraptor, Luxray and Roserade but I cant come up with a 6th member for the life of me. I was planning on using Garchomp or Weavile but I've used Garchomp before (in Pokémon Y) and Weavile is a bit too late game for me. Who should I use instead? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Oct 2020 06:34 AM PDT Honestly, I'm ready for type themed gym leaders and elite four to go away for a bit. I'd like to see bosses that focus more on stats. Yes, I realize that some types tend to excel at certain stats, but I think it would be cool to have 6 of the gyms focus on a stat each. Make the first gym a basic introduction and the last gym have 6 Pokémon, one for each stat. Then as for the elite four, given them typed teams that use status effects. Poison or grass (never had a grass E4) team that poisons, electric team that paralyzes, ghost or psychic that focuses on sleep, and the final member uses fire and ice to burn and freeze your team. The champion can just be strong all around. Anywho, it's an idea that's been floating around in my head for a while and I'm curious what others think. [link] [comments] |
In Gen I and remakes, Blue should've had Arcanine and Exeggutor ASAP Posted: 17 Oct 2020 10:33 PM PDT Watching a ton of single-mon challenge runs in RB, and after twenty years of knowing those games it suddenly strikes me how weird it is that his team can have a Growlithe, Exeggcute, and/or a friggin Gyarados starting in Pokemon Tower. One of those three already has its ultimate elemental attack. That's nuts, and it made me think about how perfect it'd be to have all THREE potential coverage mons be fully evolved, considering the other two are stone evolutions. This would not only balance out the selection by giving all three mons relatively equal oomph, but cause a nice substantial difficulty leap as you're getting your bearings. Like, you think you're pretty cool getting through Rock Tunnel and bam, your rival suddenly has two fully evolved monsters on his team. Even better, it would serve as an in-game example of choosing to evolve stone evolutions early to your own detriment: Arcanine and Exeggutor are awesome at that point, but will miss out on key moves down the line, which is totally in line with Blue's emphasis on building a strong team ASAP. To keep it from being too mean, the mons could have shoddy movepools in this first battle, but regardless, I think it'd be a neat way to keep up your rival as someone you're constantly chasing. let's share our childhood Pokemon stories. Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:34 AM PDT my childhood Pokemon story was when i got a small Pikachu plush from my Kindermusik teacher when i was a toddler or a baby. she was giving out stuffed animals (mostly beanie babies, they were originally her daughters that she didn't need) at the end of the class and i just so happened to get a Pikachu. i thought he was a rabbit for the longest time until i was in Kindergarten, when a kid named Matthew told me what it was and he gave me the Diamond and Pearl Pikachu card. now here i am today playing Leafgreen on my GBA that i got for my birthday this year. what is your childhood Pokemon story? Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:28 AM PDT Could someone please tell me the weight of a sealed Pokemon Song Best Collection (in grams)? I figure this might mean someone who has it weighing it. Many many years ago I bought two copies of the Pokemon Song Best Collection. I opened one and kept one sealed. I think I put the open one back in the original wrapper... Then I moved a bunch and misplaced both the sealed and the open one. Yesterday I found one of them and cannot figure out if it is sealed or not. I could open it to check... but that would be awful if it was the sealed one. There should be a difference in weight between the two: about 20 grams from the 11 pokemon cards I took out. I would really appreciate knowing if this was sealed or not. [link] [comments] |

Pokemon heart gold/soul silver Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:15 AM PDT I would like to purchase one of these games but they are so dam annoying. On ebay their are so many fakes it's tedious and the possibly "real ones" are 120$ or higher. Ik why they are sought after as they are great games. I would love to find a game for under 80$ would love to spend 50$ish range but i can barley even find real ones. Iv gone to every gamestop in my area and they just say good luck bro. Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:07 AM PDT I watch chuggaaconroy's playthrough of pokemon platinum fairly recently. When he got to the battle frontier, I liked the fact that Flint and Volkner were just hanging out and then they spotted you and Barry and were just like "hey, want to battle?" No official pokemon league or gym challenge stuff, just a fun battle between powerful trainers. For some reason, I really liked this, and I want to see more battles like this in the future. Just sudden battles with cool trainers. I thought about a situation. In the postgame of emerald, Winona gets a Dragonite. Maybe when you rematch the Elite four, Winona will be seen with Drake, finishing up training her dragonite with him. Maybe, Wally is also in the process of revisiting the elite four and to help with training up dragonite, you engage in a multi-battle with wally against Winona and Drake. Just a thought. Posted: 18 Oct 2020 09:20 AM PDT I'm thinking of restarting the game just to play again, I've completed the Pokedex (nearly completed living Pokedex) and don't have much left to do. I have Pokemon home and would like to keep some of the work I've put into breeding 6 IVs and some shiny pokemon, and if course legendary. Can I transfer my Pokemon to home, restart and bring them back? Edit, For Shield [link] [comments] |
We're getting every Pokémon back with Crown Tundra (opinion + reasoning) Posted: 18 Oct 2020 08:53 AM PDT As many of you probably saw, the new Pokenchi video showed a Stantler in one of the clips. Source: https://youtu.be/Z1sH1UKwRoQ?t=268. Stantler was NOT in the initial Crown Tundra datamine. Adding Pokémon to the DLCs is probably an ongoing process and they probably have a source code with their current progress updated as needed. When they released Isle of Armor, they probably had this 'up-to-date source code' that was updated beyond Isle of Armor and needed to delete/hide what wasn't going to be in the Isle of Armor. This is also why we see a bunch of Crown Tundra locations and items in the datamine. Technically if this was all done beforehand, we'd have the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra release dates long in advance, but in reality, they only told us the Crown Tundra release date recently... because I think they finished everything and added all the Pokémon recently. Of course, the Stantler could just be for fun, or maybe they really like that Pokémon. But GameFreak does stuff like this where they don't tell us what's coming up and then just drop it on us... like the Pokémon following us in the overworld. To understand the importance of this, people have been asking for following Pokémon since HGSS, released 2009. To drop this mechanic without any announcement after 10+ years of people begging for it goes to show how much they love the humble announcements. [link] [comments] |
