Pokémon Mew: Common Ancestor or Ultimate Hybrid?

Pokémon Mew: Common Ancestor or Ultimate Hybrid?

Mew: Common Ancestor or Ultimate Hybrid?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 02:48 AM PST

Earlier when I made a post discussing why some Pokemon appear to change species when they evolve (Carvanha to Sharpedo, Remoraid to Octillery, Trumbeak to Toucannon, etc.), I was told that since Pokemon are essentially their own species, traditional biological classifications cannot be applied to them. Examples being an evolutionary family of seemingly different species would still count at least as one genus, and given how many of them can crossbreed, a respective phylogenic map would be a very tangled web. In other words, "species" and "evolution" in Pokemon are different terms to their traditional definitions.

A very detailed comment I really liked told how any gendered Pokemon could be the ancestor or descendant of another, while some not being able to breed directly, Pokemon could be a giant ring species (a term I only just learned about) resulting from adaptive radiation and convergent evolution. And Legendaries, like Lugia, can reproduce, they just won't in captivity. Of course, the only problem with that theory is ring species never make a complete circle, as the two ends become to different from each other to breed, while many complete circles in Pokemon crossbreeding can be madee.g. Wooper>Rhyhorn>Lapras>Wooper. They also suggested that based on evolutionary logic, Mew may in fact NOT be the ancestor to all Pokemon, but a rare result of crossbreeding between all species, hence Mew having the genomes of all Pokemon, and what the Pokedex says may only be guesswork and legend, which all makes perfect sense. [I wanted to give an award to the comment but I didn't have any coins and I couldn't pay for buying any, but I'm worried the reason people since downvoted the original post was because they thought I was being cheap.]

It's even been applied in some canons like The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga (first volume) and Pocket Monsters: The Animation, that Pokemon are not related to animals, and are all one species due to genetic similarities, and subspecies include "Animal, Grass, Insect, etc." the names of what would become "Egg Groups" - the most canonical way to biologically classify Pokemon.

A comment to another post on the subject, someone said that Pokemon could have a special kind of Triple-stranded DNA (also a term I only just learned) where the third strand somehow takes in the genes of plants and animals in the environment, and is where the genomes of all Pokemon are in Mew and Ditto that helps them use the move Transform. They also said that Mew may still be the ancestor to all non-legendary Pokemon, and its third branch gradually synthesized into modern Pokemon, getting less active in doing so. TMs may also contain DNA sequences that can be recombined into a Pokemon's genes, helping them learn a new move.

So from what I gather, Mew really is the ancestor to all Pokemon minus some, with all their genomes in its third strand from which it synthesized or speciated, or it's a rare crossbreed of all Pokemon. If the latter is true, who is the real ancestor of all Pokemon? (Mew's earliest occurance was in the Pokemon World's Guyana where it was depicted in ruins, so this was before all Pokemon had deleloped, like Porygon, Castform and Sinistea, but who really knows?

I hope people can let me know their thoughts! I really hope I didn't misquote, ridicule or take out of context anything that was said. If I did, please let me know.

I next plan on making a post about what happened to the animals in the Pokemon world.

    Analysis: Whitney's difficulty

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 05:41 AM PST

The most meme-famous difficult fight in all of Pokemon is probably Whitney's Miltank in Gen 2. Many of the aspects of that fight's difficulty are pretty obvious: the fact that it's got solid stats for that point in the game including good speed and defenses, a recovery move, Attract to shut down half your team, and Rollout with massive power.

But one thiing that is often overlooked is the tools you're given to bring to the fight. Or rather, the dearth of them.

The Pokemon battle system heavily rewards type advantage - it's a full 2x multiplier. When you're up against a tanky opponent like Miltank, that's your best source of damage by far. So how do we hit Miltank super-effectively? Well, it's a Normal type, so only Fighting type attacks will do it. Ok, let's get some... oh.

Here is a complete list of Pokemon with Fighting type attacks available to you at this point in the game:

    • Machop (in-game trade): multiple moves
    • Nidoran lines: Double Kick, level 12
    • Pinsir: Submission, level 37
    • Heracross: Reversal, level 44

That's it. Four Pokemon lines, realistically two. Oh, and Machop is 75% male (correction: the traded one is always female), and the male Nidoran line is obviously 100%, so Attract says hi.

Ok, well, how about we forgo super-effective damage and just try tanking Rollouts while we chip it down with regular attacks? Fine, let's see a list of available Pokemon that resist Rollout:

    • Sandshrew line
    • Geodude line
    • Onix
    • Cubone line (Crystal only, Game Corner)
    • Phanpy line (Crystal only)
    • Wooper line

It's better, but... it's still just not a lot, relative to the entire roster of available Pokemon by this point (which happens to include loads of Bug and Flying types). And if you're playing blind and didn't plan for Miltank ahead of time, a lot of these will require some backtracking. And only Geodude and Onix also resist Stomp.

Obviously, these aren't the only ways to win the fight. But they're certainly the most straightforward, and a good contrast to most other gym leader fights in terms of how easy it is to exploit these basic openings. Let's compare this with two battles in later games that I think are of theoretically similar difficulty:

    HGSS Whitney

As the most direct comparison available, it's instructive to look at what's changed by the time HGSS rolls around. The biggest difference is that the Fighting type move list has expanded, as have movepools. Heracross now gains a Fighting move at a much lower level (Brick Break, level 19), as does Pinsir. Foucs Blast can be bought at Goldenrod's department store, though only a few realistically available Pokemon can learn it (Quagsire is notable, since it resists Rollout).

That alone is a big help, and HGSS Whitney doesn't compare to her original incarnation. But there's another fight worth looking at for comparison.

    SM/USUM Totem Lurantis

I happen to consider Totem Lurantis Game Freak's premier innovation in well-attempted difficulty, with its synergistic Sunny Day strategy. With Castform (SM) or either partner (USUM) setting up Sunny Day, Totem Lurantis gets a one-turn Solar Blade (on top of the free one granted by its Power Herb), a 66% heal, and can't be statused. It also has a partner; Castform (SM) and Kecleon (USUM) provide additional damage and coverage, while Comfey (USUM) can give priority healing with Floral Healing or buff Defense with Flower Shield. Lurantis' stats are good, too. It has great Attack, solid defenses, and has an inherent +2 Speed boost to fix its weakest stat.

On paper, this fight should be miles harder than Whitney's Miltank. There's so much going for it! Yet it isn't, and this is where the available tools show their power. By this point in the game, you have access to a much wider range of Pokemon than you would've at Whitney. You also have multiple weaknesses to choose from, all of which are common attacking types with widespread moves - especially in comparison to the diminutive move list and learnsets of Gen 2. The Z-move mechanic is basically a free battle ender, especially considering you get the Fire type one just before this battle.

I think this analysis is illustrative of how the general improvement of the game systems over time - wider and more diverse Pokemon selection, more extensive move list, broader type coverage on movesets - has made the games inevitably easier, even on those occasions when Game Freak actively tries to make a battle difficult. The modern player character has access to so many tools that it's hard to trap them in a situation they can't respond to with a 2x damage multiplier to trivialise just about any challenge.

Review of Ultra Sun! Loved it!

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 03:24 AM PST

Omg I just finished it, it was really exciting. I bashed on it at one point for short routes but they really weren't that bad.

The Characters seemed like interesting people it's fun seeing our friends parents and such have a role. And God Bless sweet Lillie she's perfect.

I made an all female team, popplio (Leah) lopunny (Bonnie blue), Bewear (Brittany) Oricorio (Lisa) Cutiefly (Sweetie Pie) Tsareena (Payly Flay) they were so fun.

Bonnie Blue I absolutely adored! I had to get her to high affection to evolve to lopunny but it only got better from there, we had such a real bond it felt. She would survive on 1 HP and then the thing would say she didn't faint because she didn't want me sad 🥺. And even when she was low on HP it mentioned she was about to cry 🥺! I was so attached to this Pokémon it was unbelievable I love her!

The Totem Pokémon were annoying at times had big trouble with togedmaru. My whole team only died twice the entire run and it was cuz of that, besides that it was a fun cruise.

Championship battle with Hau was so Insane!

Normally i never use a legendary but I realized my cutiefly (once she was level 50) that she was too weak so I was seeking a quick replacement.

Out of nowhere on the icy mountain Necrozma was lying there and oh my goodness, I caught it first try with a great ball I was ecstatic! I nicknamed it Nexie to give a female name to match the rest of my team. I didn't use Nexie the entirety of the elite four though… however

Championship Battle was so flipping intense! Bonnie Blue started off really strong defeating both Raichu and Taurus fairly easily making the score 6-4 Kendall (Blonde girl pink plaid skirt with a satin white headband, so adorbs).

The 6-4 lead was extended after a technical change of events Hau did a few switches first starting with inceniroar then switching it to leafion in a smart spur of the game decision. This knocked out my Starter Leah. Bonnie Blue who has a fire move I forgot which one hehe but it was crucial was able to defeat Leafeon making it 5-3 (Have to Note Bonnie avoided one attack with 12 HP got hit once more went down to 1 HP and was able to hold off leafeon, i was so proud!)

Was able to get a few cheap attacks on the low HP Incenoroar and game was now 5-2 in my favor.

Noivern had a heck of a game taking down Bonnie, Brittany and Payly Flay. Game now tied at 2-2

I was getting nervous I wanted it to be a fair battle so I never used any revives and limited myself to 2 Hyper Potions.

It was Lisa the oricorio and the newly acquired Necrozma vs Noivern and Crobamadible.

Lisa was able to go first and knocked Noivern down to half health but Lisa was just too weak to take the lead for us. We go down 1-2

I was really nervous now, I didn't want Hau to become the first ever champion because I've beaten him every time prior but he had the lead for the championship and I was without Bonnie or Leah

Nexie had the type advantage and despite Noiverns strong attacks that defeated 3 or 4 of my Pokémon we were able to hold it off just this time and Nexie tied the game 1-1

A third health Nexie vs Crobamidable but a psychic type move had the advantage, able to go first and a beauty of an attack by Nexie I was able to become the first Alolan Champion! Yay!

I got my first ever Valentines gift and it was a Mimikyu necklace!

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 08:47 AM PST

I don't know if this is allowed here but figured it was Pokémon related so if it is not I am sorry!

I (34F) have had boyfriends before but we never really made a deal out of love day. This year my boyfriend got me a Pokémon necklace from the Pokémon center and I cried. He doesn't know shit about Pokémon he didn't even know Pikachu's name "they yellow rabbit? I thought his name was Pokémon". The fact he got me something I care about that he knows nothing about was such a nice gift and I've never received any type of real love day gift. I love him to death and it's just an amazing feeling! Thanks for letting me celebrate!!!

    Here's the necklace!

    Legendary Pokémon 101

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 01:32 AM PST

We all know what legendary Pokémon are, right? Well, did you know that legendary Pokémon are labeled within the code of the games? This is how it all breaks down.

There are two main groups of legendary Pokémon: Legendaries and Sub-legendaries. Mythical Pokémon are a group within Legendaries. Ultra Beasts are a group within Sub-legendaries. All of these Pokémon can colloquially be referred to as "legendary Pokémon."

All Legendary Pokémon (as of posting obviously):

    • Legendaries: Mewtwo, Lugia, Ho-oh, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, Zacian, Zamazanta, Eternatus, Calyrex.
      • Mythicals: Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Manaphy, Phione, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect, Diancie, Hoopa, Volcanion, Magearna, Marshadow, Zeraora, Meltan, Melmetal, Zarude.
    • Sub-legendaries: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latias, Latios, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Heatran, Regigigas, Cresselia, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Tornadus, Thunderous, Landorus, Type:Null, Silvally, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, Tapu Fini, Kubfu, Urshifu, Regieleki, Regidrago, Glastrier, Spectre.
      • Ultra Beasts: Nihilego, Buzzwole, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Celesteela, Kartana, Guzzlord, Poipol, Naganadel, Stakataka, Blacephalon.

    Bonus lesson!

Pseudo-legendary Pokémon are, as the name suggests, not legendaries. "Pseudo-legendary" is a fan-made term that describes Pokémon with a three stage evolution line whose final evolutions have a base stat total of 600. The pseudo-legendaries are Dragonite, Tyranitar, Salamence, Metagross, Garchomp, Hydreigon, Goodra, Kommo-o, and Dragapult. Although the term "pseudo-legendary" is coined by fans, these Pokémon seem to be considered a group by The Pokémon Company as there has been at least one pseudo-legendary in every generation of Pokémon so far, and the Pokémon were featured together in a merch collection called "Late Bloomers."

Thinking of fake signature Pokémon moves, day 115: Shuckle

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:47 AM PST

I am coming up with at least 1 fake move that would be exclusive to 1 Pokémon or an evolutionary line of Pokémon. I am going in Pokédex order, and I will skip every Pokémon or evolutionary line that already has a Pokémon in it that has a signature move. Signature Z-moves or G-Max moves don't count.

I didn't cover Scizor because I already covered Scyther, meaning Scizor already has its idea out there.

Shuckle's move is called Juice Cover, a Bug-Type Status move with 40 PP. This move can be used on any Pokémon within range on the field, including the user itself. When used on the user itself, the move will prevent the user from flinching for 5 turns and heal the user by 25% of its total HP. When used on an opponent, it can cause the opponent to have a 20% chance to flinch each turn for 5 turns. When used on an ally, the ally will be healed by 25% of their total HP, but they will also have a 20% chance to flinch each turn for the next 5 turns.

This move is based on Shuckle being well-known for producing juices in its shell from the berries it stores. We don't know what kind of juices they are, so I decided to just be creative and think outside of the box. The logic of the effect when Shuckle uses Juice Cover on itself is because Shuckle would of course make the better juice for itself. This part of the move is also kind of based on the item Berry Juice. That is why it heals the user, because it made juice with berries that are good for it. The protection against flinching is there because I wanted this part of the move to not be just healing the user. Besides, the other effects of this move also involve flinching so why not?

The reason for the target healing when the target is an ally is simply also because of Shuckle picking the healthier berries to make juice from. Same reason as the first effect. However, the reason it can randomly make the ally flinch for a while is because, well, as the name of the move suggests, the target gets covered in juice. This can make them quite slippery, and thus they can slip, causing them to flinch, when they want to attack.

That last part is also the logic for when the target is an opponent, they get covered in juice and get slippery, which can cause them to flinch from time to time. The reason why it doesn't heal opponents, as you might expect, is because Shuckle uses berries that are not healthy for this juice. They aren't bad for you, which is why Juice Cover can't damage opponents, but they aren't good for you either.

So to recap, when used on the user, it heals the user and prevents them from flinching. When used on an ally, it heals that ally but it can cause them to flinch randomly from time to time. When used on an opponent, it just causes them to flinch from time to time, without any benefits (unless they have Steadfast, and if they or the ally has Inner Focus, this move will still be executed but the target just can't flinch).

Originally, I was going to adjust the effect of this move depending on the berry the user was holding but there are so many berries, and this just seemed more interesting to me. Besides, there already is a move that does that, Natural Gift.

I'd love to hear feedback or questions about my ideas, and if you have any ideas for signature moves for Pokémon, I'd love to hear them, I might use the ideas (with your consent of course)! Even though this is a daily thing, or at least, I'll try to keep it daily, I don't think I'll be consistent with the time of day I post another idea.

    What’s your ‘partner’ Pokémon?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:25 AM PST

This isn't a 'who's your starter' question, but more of me asking which Pokémon do you most commonly find using in every game or even in just one game as your ace? For example, I'm replaying Ultra Sun and my highest level and most used Pokémon is a Lopunny that I caught at the beginning of the game and she's my ace. Cute charm+ silk scarf+ return+ max friendship = almost one-shotting most opponents. Then I have a dark type to combat ghost types.

    Pokémon Zoo Game?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 08:34 AM PST

Do you think Nintendo would ever give us a Pokémon zoo game like Zoo Tycoon or Jurassic World Evolution? I think I could definitely put days worth of game time into something like that. I would rather the game be for switch, but I could see them making it a mobile game too. What do you guys think?

What would you rather have for Pokemon Animations?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:09 AM PST

Ok so I know that Pokemon animations is a big deal especially with the 3D models. We all wish that they had more emotion to them. Such a thing does exist and the latest version of these are in Battle Revolution. If Gamefreak were to take those models, give them an HD polish and then just toss them into a new Pokemon game then I would love that. This does come with a few things that people don't like.

First would be the battle will last longer due to longer move animations and fainting animation if you play with them on. I feel like you would play with them on if you really care about animations. 2nd would be that some moves would look very similar without much change. In the previous 3D games pokemon would have maybe 2 or 3 different animations when it came to moves. I know some people want new animations for every move but I dont think it would be that easy.

I know people want all new models and animations for Pokemon but we already have 493 awesome models and animations that aren't used at all anymore and it's a shame. I would rather they import those and then do whatever they want with other models they plan to include in future games but with the same style. I'm sure the Switch can handle it. It shouldnt be that hard since future games are going to be cutting moves and Pokemon to make it more accurate to the regions. It's just a shame that such great models are unused. What do y'all think?

Just finished Pokemon Alpha Sapphire my first Pokémon game

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:44 AM PST

So I've never really had the chance to play Pokémon when I was a kid. I bought a 2ds XL a year ago and bought with it a copy of Pokémon Alpha sapphire but never really had a chance to really play it until (just sat on my shelf for a whole year). So I just beat the Pokémon league after grinding for the past two days leveling my Pokémon because they were all low level and got stomped when I tried to take on the elite four.

Since this is my first game I don't have anything to compare it to (heard a lot of people really like Heartgold and SouldSilver, they are next on my list). All in all I loved the game and I'm really exited to start the Delta Episode. I usually don't like grindy games but theres something special about the Pokémon games that just pull you in and make you wanna grind for hours, catching new Pokémon and leveling the ones you already have. When I finally got my squad to a high enough level to take on the Elite Four again and went on to challenge Steven and beat him it was one of the best feelings that I've ever had in any game in a while.

I feel like it has been a long time since I've had a game pull me in. It's mainly due to the limited time that I have to put in games these, and games have become increasingly grindy in the most unnecessary way. I've been getting more into chill games that don't require much from the player to enjoy the game.

So anyways I'm kinda mad that I missed all of that fun when I was young, I wish I was there when Pokémon when it was at its peak. Alas there is always time for trying something new, I always had Pokémon in the back of my mind and now that I had the chance I'm glad that lived up to the hype and I'm sure I will be playing more Pokémon in the future. Once I'm able to afford a switch I will definitely try the Pokémon there though I've heard bad reviews of them, but can't judge without trying.

    Top 10 most under-appreciated Pokemon?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:26 AM PST

    Top 10 most underrated Pokémon?

What do you think? I've always liked Pokémon that were unappreciated and forgotten. I'm not necessarily talking about pokemon that have underrated battle skills, just pokemon that are under-appreciated in general. Here's my list (in no order):

    Clamperl

    Huntail

    Gorebyss

I find these Pokemon to have cool designs, and decent stats, too. It's a shame they've been forgotten, even if they're similar to the (much less cool imo) Shellder line.

    Yanmega

Cool design, great stats, and speed boost.

    Maractus

This pokemon seems to get hated because we already have a cactus pokemon. So what? Imagine if Salamence got hated for being "another" dragon? Or Garchomp? Or Haxorus? Or- you get the point.

    Heatmor

Just plain forgotten, despite having decent stats.

    Durant

    Same as Heatmor.

    Burmy

    Wormadam

I like these guys's gimmick. They look cool.

    Qwilfish

Not horrible stats, and a cool type combination.

    Getting back into Pokémon

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 04:55 AM PST

I recently bought a Switch and have been loving SWSH! The last Pokémon game I played were Blue and Yellow. After getting back into it for the first time in so long, I realize that I have missed out on so much!

I'd like to go back and play the other generations but I no longer own a GB/GBA/3DS. It doesn't seem like there's a way to play these on the Switch. (Am I wrong about that?) So, what would y'all recommend to be the best way to play these? Bite the bullet and buy a used 3DS?

What do you guys do with Pokemon Yellow Pikachu?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:42 AM PST

Currently doing a playthrough of pokemon yellow and traded off my pikachu to crystal so I could evolve it and trade it back. This is usually what I do every time I play pokemon yellow and it made me wonder what people usually do with pikachu. It doesnt seem like it's stats are changed at all besides some moveset changes so he gets slaughtered by anything mid to late game. What do y'all usually do with him?
