The games don't need to be harder, they need to be smarter

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:17 AM PDT

Let's get something straight -- the games are absolutely easier than they were in gen 1. This is not a judgement call, it's just a fact. Part of it comes from the basic fact that Pokemon have more diverse movepools (think about how Charmander sucked against Brock in Gen 1 but was saved in Gen 3 by metal claw). Another part is just because Gamefreak has introduced quality-of-life improvements. Lastly, they want the game to be fun and not punishing -- the first rival battle in Gen 1 is essentially a coin-toss regardless of how good you are.

I don't think anyone is calling for most of these things to be rolled back. We do want it to be more of a challenge, though. You could theoretically do that by increasing the levels of the trainers. If you do that, though, it just means more grinding. Nobody likes that. What you have to do, and the reason why romhacks are so popular, is give trainers smarter teams.

The reason why Whitney's milktank is so devastating is because it utilizes a really good strategy. In the same Gen, Chuck has pokemon that can actually utilize focus punch (Primeape has double team and Poliwrath has hypnosis) -- Gamefreak clearly thought about what teams the gym leaders could have to be a legitimate challenge, and I don't think that's something they've done for a while. Please make it change.
