Wasted 6 hours of my life.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 04:47 AM PDT

I was playing Pokemon Platinum and was on the way to Lake Acuity. When I reached snowpoint city, I talk with a trainer named Mindy and was surprised to hear that she wanted to trade her Haunter for a Medicham. Immediately after hearing the word Haunter, I set out to find a Meditite. To those of you who don't know, Haunter evolves into Gengar after trading and Gengar happens to be one of my favourite mons. I've never used a Gengar before because I didn't have any friends to trade with. So, after hearing this lady is offering a Gengar, I scour Mt. Coronet for a Meditite. After finally catching a Meditite, I began training it for 6 hours using the Vs Seeker. I basically battled every trainer from twinleaf city to snowpoint city. After evolving the Meditite, I go to the lady's house looking forward to use a Gengar finally. I do the trade and after hearing she made it hold a f*cking everstone, I basically deleted the game. Never have I had the urge to kill a NPC before till now.

Moral of the story: Don't take everything for granted.

P.S. English is not my first language, so please overlook any errors.

Lucario's Pearl beta dex entry explains why it's Steel type

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 10:17 AM PDT

Fights using its sharp fangs and spikes. It can use its opponent's aura to read its thoughts and movement.

The original idea was that Lucario would use its spikes (and fangs) in combat, and simply had the ability to sense the auras of other living beings. But then the idea of Lucario using its spikes in battle was dropped in favor of it using aura-based attacks. But the design and type remained the same. The only remnants of this earlier idea are it learning Metal Claw and Metal Sound, as well as Bone Rush (which presumably would have had Lucario hit its opponents with the spikes on its paws instead of how it's now canonically a bone-shaped staff made out of aura)

I honestly don’t know what to title this

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 04:20 AM PDT

Pokémon, for most of my life, has meant the world to me. I've played almost every generation (except for 6) of the Pokémon main series games and have spent countless hours replaying them over the years. In the last 4 years or so I've also dedicated a ton of time into shiny hunting and have collected quite a few to date. Im in my twenties now and still play Pokémon every day trying new challenges and exciting ways to spice up my competitive teams. Yesterday, however, while out of my apartment, I came home from work excited to resume the nuzlocke I've been working on, or perhaps do some shiny hunting, only to find that my apartment had been broken into and a good handful of my electronics had been stolen, 3Ds and dsi included. I still have some things like my original copies of red and blue for my game boy and my copy of diamond, but all my other Pokémon games are gone. To make matters worse, I had recently gone through the trouble of transferring all of my old and nostalgic mons up to ultra moon, which included all of the shinies I've collected so far as well as the mons from all of games I've played growing up. And now they are gone. I have filed a police report and I hope that I will get my Pokémon back, but until then it's really just a waiting game. My childhood was built on the back of Pokémon and losing these games felt like losing a part of that to me. Apologies for the longer post, just needed to vent to people who actually understand Pokemon.

What if Australia was a Pokemon region

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 06:19 AM PDT

If Gamefreak decides to base their next pokemon region (gen 9) on Australia, here's what I think they should do:

    Starters

Grass: A Diprotodon (giant wombat). It starts off as a pure grass type and gains the ground type after fully evolving.

Fire: A taipan. It remains a dual Fire/Dragon type throughout its entire evolutionary stage

Water: A platypus. It becomes part poison after fully evolved

    Early Route Pokemon

Regional Rodent: A two-stage normal/rock type evolutionary line based on the rock rat

Regional Bird: A two-stage ground-type evolutionary line based on the cassowary. The final evolved form gains either the fighting or dark type (to fit its aggressive, fighting behavior)

Regional Bug: Bug/Dark type Regional variant of the Joltik line

Other Pokemon encountered in the Wild:

A Rock/Psychic type regional variant of the Rolycoly line based on crystal formations

A Normal/Water type two-stage evolutionary line based on the Newfoundland dog

A Water/Dark type regional variant of the Sandile line

A Ground type Kangaroo (two stage evolution; final stage becomes part fighting if male and normal if female)

    Fossil Pokemon

    Grass/Dark-type Tasmanian tiger

    Ground type Moa bird

Game Freak's mentality with game development is "release now, finish later", and that's really biting them in the ass now that we're not getting third versions anymore.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 03:11 AM PDT

I don't think it's any coincidence that the most widely-beloved Pokemon games are either third versions (Emerald, Platinum), remakes (FR/LG, HG/SS), or in the case of Unova, a sequel that borrows heavily from the first games. Likewise, when you look at a game like X/Y, or Sword/Shield, they don't really compare when it comes to polished gameplay or the sheer breadth of content. But when you ignore all the re-releases and focus only on the brand new, original releases Game Freak's made, it really puts into perspective how incomplete these games feel without the content introduced in their definitive editions.

Gold and Silver didn't have a female protagonist, the Suicune subplot, or animated Pokemon sprites. Ruby and Sapphire didn't have have the Rayquaza storyline, Gym Leader rematches, double battles as a regular occurrence, or the Battle Frontier. Diamond and Pearl had it the worst. The Distortion World, battle facilities, Elite 4 rematches, and almost 20% of the regional Dex were exclusive to Platinum. Black and White were the first games in a long time that truly felt like complete, definitive products with a lot of content. But even these games lacked the PWT, secret grottos, animated trainer sprites, and difficulty modes that so many people love about their sequels.

I feel like Game Freak got used to releasing what were essentially a pair of betas onto the market, and then releasing a definitive version/remake to finish what they started. X and Y, on the surface, looked like another repeat of this trend. I remember thinking "the story's dumb, Zygarde doesn't do anything, there's not as much content as the older games, but we'll get Pokemon Z to fix this." But to everyone's shock, they skipped a third version entirely and made Sun and Moon instead, which were just as rushed. We got a half-hearted attempt to fix these issues with US/UM, but not only were they a pair of games instead of a singular title, they completely ruined the storyline of a game that is very reliant on its storyline to hook players in. Sword and Shield I don't even need to comment on, the DLC expansions were nice but fixed none of the core underlying issues with the main campaign.

None of these games are necessarily worse than say, Diamond and Pearl or Gold and Silver. But games like Emerald and Platinum have shown us how good the series could be with enough development time and resources. Don't get me wrong, the fact that we even needed third versions in the first place for these games to feel complete is a problem. But it's frustrating to me that Game Freak's still operating on the same mentality they had back in the year 2000. On the bright side, the fact that they're taking their time on the next mainline games, and are releasing Legends Arceus as a single product is all promising news. Maybe they'll eventually break this habit and start releasing finished products on day 1 like Nintendo's other studios.

    Sonia’s Team

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 07:24 AM PDT

Just for fun, who would you put on Sonia's team if she was in the league? I'm thinking a history and research theme...

    1. Yamper (just her favourite)
    2. Stonjourner (ancient history)
    3. Escavalier (Medieval period)
    4. Weezing-Galar (industrial era)
    5. Rotom-Fan (modern times)
    6. Blastoise (assuming she got the opposing starter to Leon's Charizard)

    Castform needs a buff.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 08:18 AM PDT

Castform is a very cool Pokemon, with a very unique idea, but in practice it is not very good. Castform has a base stat total of 420, with 70 in each stat. The way Castform could be buffed is to make it so that when it transforms into a weather variant, it gets a buff of 100 or even just 50 to its BST. I think a small buff going to health, defenses, and speed, with most of the buff going to special attack would be best. I love Castform, and would love to see it used more.

What do you value the most in a Pokemon game?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 11:41 AM PDT

I am interested in what others value the most in a Pokemon game. So I spontaneously made this poll. Of course, choosing one option doesn't mean that you exclusively like only that, it's just about what you look forward to the most in a game.

Now, some options might overlap, e.g. of course people who enjoy exploration might also be interested in finding all the different Pokemon in an area or finding legendary Pokemon, or reading lore. And vice versa, people who like catching all the Pokemon might also enjoy exploration a lot. Competitive people might also enjoy single player challenges, or people who like Pokemon-player interaction might like side activities like Pokeathlon or Pokewood. I just chose what came to my mind as the six biggest categories. It's just about which aspect of a Pokemon game excites you truly the most.

    If you would choose something that is not listed as a possible answer, please don't vote and instead write a comment that can be voted alternatively :). I am not sure if this is the ideal selection of answers, but those were the ones I came up with now ^^;

Additionally, I'd love to read some of your opinions on what you think is really important to you in a Pokemon game, what is kinda irrelevant/what you don't care about or what you even don't need or want in a Pokemon game.

In advance, thank you for answering this poll and sharing your opinion in the comments! Have a nice day!

The never-ending cutscenes of Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 11:26 AM PDT

I had previously played and finished Pokemon Sun so i decided that it's the time to try the "superior versions" of those games, Pokemon Ultra Sun.

Now there has been some time since i play Pokemon Sun so i might have forgotten about them but my God does Pokemon Ultra Sun have so many cutscenes!

They are never-ending. Every 15 minutes (at best) i get a cutscenes. Just when i get really into the game while doing your typical Pokemon Game things BOOM! A wild cutscene appears! It's a like a wild Pokemon encounter and i have no Repels for them....It has come to the point where i enjoy more just grinding my newly caught Pokemon up to the level of my other ones simply because i get to have an unbroken experience of the game. And they are so long. Like every conversation you get in the game is so long and unnecessary. Even the small talks are not so small.

I have been enjoying the game for the most part but the cutscenes are really ruining it for me... Anyone else has this issue?

What is your favorite type out of these three?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 08:37 AM PDT

I was just wondering what everyone's favorite type out of the three core types are. In my opinion I think that fire types are my favorite because of their base stats are good and their move pool maybe a bit small but they make up for that in power. But that is what I think what does everyone else think?

Which of the Modern Generations do you like the most

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 09:09 AM PDT

The three most recent generations seem to be the most hated. The biggest criticisms I see for each are Gen 6 easy, Gen 7 has too many cutscenes, and Gen 8 (too many to list). That said, what gen is the best of "the worst". I'm including a results option since I imagine a lot of people don't have a favorite between them or simply haven't played them

    Time Is Running Out!

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 09:08 AM PDT

TLDR - Link at the end

I've been thinking recently about legendary pokemon and why they aren't as strong as they should be, and wondering if maybe they were stronger before.

The main example that comes to mind with this kyogre and groudon, they are nowhere near as strong as they should be but do have an ancient primal form that's slightly stronger.

So I'm wondering if maybe long ago, there was simply more infinity energy available and that now it's running out.

The idea of the main energy or magic or whatever in a fictional world being abundant in ancient times but slowly running out and becoming increasingly rare is certainly not a new idea, it's a pretty common plot element across the genre of fiction. But it makes sense in the world of pokemon.

The idea being that maybe millions of years of ago there was just more infinity energy around and the pokemon were stronger and had different forms. I've already mentioned the weather duo but it's possible more or all of the old world legends once had primal forms, dialga does in the "Explorers of" mystery dungeon games which are obviously far from main canon but if dialga does palkia likely does too and maybe so do the other legends.

Plus there are mega forms that seem to imply that back in the day these could have been the natural state of pokemon like aerodactyl.

"Some scholars claim that this is Aerodactyl's true appearance."

But forcing it bare this form unnaturally is harmful and it's body can't cope with the extra energy. Modern creatures potentially now adapted to modern IE levels.

Plus there's the ancient evos from gen 4 like yamega and tangrowth. Bigger stronger versions that can no longer be obtained naturally. Although it could be for different reasons in their case, especially as they aren't as old.

There is a finite and ultimately limited amount of energy and matter in the universe. Now while the origins of the universe are always going to be uncertain, anyone who saw my failed short will know that the big bang is canon in the pokemon universe. Now i'm not a physicist but i believe all that diagram really tells us is that all the matter in the universe originated from a single point and is slowly diffusing it's way outward.

However, that detail alone is pretty important and a key element of this theory.

Basically as time goes on the universe expands, all that interchangeable matter and energy gets more and more distant as it diffuses away from the centre of the universe. That means that the amount of matter and energy on and around earth will decrease with time.

And probably even more importantly, there's more life than ever before on earth. That limited amount of energy available here is now shared by the diverse array of life living on earth. Rather than being hoarded by the few ancient, primordial beings, the billions or even trillions of organisms on earth are soaking up that energy and draining the supply.

The more pokemon the weaker they get overall. This is obviously not going to be noticeable in a human life span though. Like I said this is something that would be seen on geologic or cosmological time scales.

The reason mega evolution is possible in the timeline where the Ultimate weapon was fired may simply be that taking the infinity energy for countless pokemon and condensing it allowed some of that dispersed energy to come back together. Showing up what the true potential of pokemon could have been in ancient times.

But that's all theory and conjecture. It sounds nice and logical at least. And I wouldn't worry about your pokemon running of energy any time soon.

    Improving the Grass type.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 08:30 PM PDT

This is the first of a three-part series in which I'd like you to improve the three worst Pokemon types.

Grass is notorious for being a terrible type, having:

    - a record 5 weaknesses (Fire, Flying, Poison, Bug, Ice)

    - 7 types resist Grass, also a record (itself, all weaknesses except Ice, Dragon, and Steel)

    - It shares 2 strengths with Water, a much better type (Rock and Ground)

-Very few reliable moves aside from Giga Drain, Leaf Blade and Energy Ball (most others have low power or some drawbacks)

How would the Grass type be improved? Comment below!

Are Solgaleo and Lunala ultra beasts? Gen 7

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 07:39 AM PDT

My theory on them being ultra beasts are as follows. One, they both have the distinct echo sound that every ultra beasts produce. Second, they both represent space, as solgaleo represents the sun, and Lulana represents the moon. Their pre-evolutions, cosmog and cosmogoem, also have this distinct sound. What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts on these Ash vs Red fan wars

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 10:23 AM PDT

When talking about Red, I'm mostly referring to game/Origins Red. Manga Red is technically a different medium compared to the other ones and is probably the ultimate superior.

Honestly, there are a couple of things that people keep getting wrong. First of all, these are two completely different universes/canons. The Red universe is pretty straightforward: catch all the Pokemon and win the league. Now, we shouldn't discredit the efforts and achievements of Red, but in the anime world, it's a little harder. The league is mostly a stadium battle with hundreds of trainers fighting for the title, yet only one will win; some of these are adults who probably had years of experience, yet they never win. Ash does pretty well for a 10-year-old. As for catching Pokemon, let's be honest; out of all the hundreds of Pokemon you caught, how many of them do you use?

And second of all, let's be real: neither Ash nor Red are that great as we make them out to be. Red has the skills, yet he lacks personality. The whole "silent protagonist" trope works well with some characters whose personalities are subtle yet still exist (eg. Claude from GTA 3). Game Red isn't really much more than a caricature of the player. That's not very different from other game protagonists, such as Gold or Leaf. Even in Origins where Red has a voice, he doesn't really have much in special in character besides being your typical Pokemon trainer who's striving to be a Pokemon master (then again, this is mostly a fault with the pacing of the special).

As for Ash, well, he has the heart and humor, but he lacks consistency. During DP we see Ash as a proficient trainer who relied a lot on out-of-the-box strategies. Then in BW, we see all that progress go down in the drain. Then XY Ash presented himself better and more mature than he was in DP, but by SM, while his battle skills were still there, his personality became immature again. Ash suffers a severe case of bad writing and plot armor.

So what are your thoughts about this?

I compiled all Pokemon Encounter Rates and locations from the Gen 3 Games into one sheet!

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 05:25 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I recently came up with the bright idea to pursue a Living Dex for the Gen 3 Games. In order to prepare, I decided to make a little Google Sheet compiling every pokemon and their availability throughout the Gen 3 games so that I had a place I could easy reference when trying to catch 'em all! I wrote in all of the data manually with Bulbapedia as my reference, so please do let me know if you have any suggestions or corrections! Thanks \^-^

    Favorite generation overall?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 04:28 PM PDT

This poll has probably been done before but I'm still curious. What was/is your favorite generation overall? Mine has got to be generation 4. Diamond and pearl were amazing. Heartgold and soulsilver were even better. And then we also had mystery dungeon explorers of sky as apart of the generation. My second favorite gen is probably gen 7 because that's the generation that got me back into pokemon after a few years. And I loved so many of the pokemon in that generation like incineroar and mimikyu. I combind gens 6/7/8 in the poll due to poll limits and I figured those are probably gonna have the least amount of votes (just a guess)

    Using Legendaries?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 12:01 PM PDT

Never in a single playthrough of my entire Pokémon experience have I actually incorporated legendary Pokémon into my team roster.

I think almost every player can agree that it feels cheap to use legendary Pokémon since the game itself is already easy enough.

    Old Pokemon Games

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 10:06 AM PDT

I'm wanting to collect all the pokemon games, right from the very start. I still have pokemon red and yellow from when I was a kid, but I want to get the rest. Other than seeing if the cartridges have the original Nintendo seal of quality on them, is there any other way of making sure they're not fake? I'm UK based is that makes a difference. Thanks
