Rose, Leon, the ten year plan and why it couldn't wait another day

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 07:10 AM PDT

Contains major spoilers for the main storyline of Sword and Shield!

One thing I felt was incredibly rushed in SWSH was Rose's sudden and very unreasonable turn to the dark side. That one arc was crammed in there at the last minute and pretty poorly executed from a storyteller perspective. Yet, after a month of research and a lot of thought, I have finally figured out why it made complete sense for Rose and was necessary for the plot. Hear me out:

    Rose's Plan

    • First: That plan was not a spur of the moment thing. Rose's planning went back over ten years. Somewhere around that time, Rose must have discovered that the energy source that his business empire was reliant on would one day run dry (i.e. the dens would produce less and less Galar particles). He also discovered that there was a pokemon that could put whatever produced those particles into overdrive. He could contain it, but not control it.
    • But what if there was a trainer, talented enough to control Eternatus, loyal enough to Galar to not abuse its power and just susceptible enough to aid Macro Cosmos?
    • Enter Leon. He is an incredible talented trainer, charismatic and naturally competitive. His parents are currently busy with their newborn baby, so he would probably look for a guardian. Rose takes him under his wings and tosses the ten year old into the world of professional sports. Leon thrives and Rose can build another successful brand around his champion.
    • He of course makes sure that Leon learns how important he is to Galar. There is a reason his official attire is designed after a king. It also helps that, like all pro athletes, Leon is built up and received as a modern day hero.
    • Now in comes the player, a challenger who could actually pose a threat to Leon's championship title. This title is what defines him as Galar's hero. And for Rose's plan to work, Leon has to be very conscious of the fact that he holds this title.
    • So now it's the day before the title tournament. It's actually the last day that Rose can set his plan into motion, because tomorrow, some nobody with no relation to Rose whatsoever might hold the title. So he calls in Leon and tells him about how in 1000 years Galar will suffer an energy crisis and that they had to act now etc. To Leon this of course doesn't make any sense and he decides to compete the next day regardless. Which is what Rose had probably wanted all along.
    • Then it's the opening ceremony and Rose hijacks the podcast to say only three sentences. One of them is a particularly vindictive jab against Leon. He basically calls him out in front of all who watch, blaming him for what happens.
    • Leon will now stop at nothing to get Eternatus back under control, which is exactly what Rose wants. After all, it's Leon's fault as well as his responsibility. How his stance towards his former mentor is right now, Rose cannot know. What he does know is that Leon knows about his motivations with the energy crisis, even if Rose is imprisoned.
    • He calculates, that if Leon manages to catch Eternatus, his place as Galar's hero is cemented and his word unquestioned. And as he had been subtly trained for ten years, he'll turn to Rose or Oleana for guidance what to do now. That way, Macro Cosmos can continue existing, Galar has all the power it needs and it will be squarely placed in the had of an unquestioned hero instead of a faceless company.

In short: Release Eternatus at exactly that point, when the one person, that is simultaneously able to control it and dependent on me has to do what I want. Then this person, now an unquestioned hero in the public eye will come to me for guidance, thus ensuring the future for my business (or Galar).

This to me is the second worst instance of child grooming ever depicted in the pokemon franchise and I'm incredibly happy that Rose was only interested in the future of either Galar or Macro Cosmos.

Why it didn't work and how they crammed Leon's character arc in it

The plan didn't work out in the end, since Leon failed in catching Eternatus. He probably did the lion's share of the work, but Leon had a substantial character flaw that had been hinted at during the entire game: He is self-reliant to a fault.

During the game we often see Leon dismiss our and Hop's offers to help him. I believe he genuinely does not do this because he wants the glory for himself, but because he firmly believes that he is the only one competent enough to do things. But, because the power of friendship is always victorious, it is actually Hop and us who manage to finally catch Eternatus.

Now that Leon has to admit that he has equals on his powerlevel, his allegiance to Rose, who propped him up as the only hope and put him under immense amount of pressure, starts to crumble.

Leon later admits that he had become too closed off and needs to work on establishing a steady relationship with a rival he can butt heads with.

I've thought long about why Leon seems so much more mature when he takes over the Battle Tower, even though his general nature hasn't changed. It's because he's way more tranquil and balanced, now that he can concentrate on what he loves, instead of putting himself under constant pressure. That sentiment is shared by his mother, who stated that he finished a meal with them for the first time in ten years after he lost the title.

A quick side note about sponsors

Leon isn't sponsored by any brand under the Macro Cosmos umbrella, which I always found strange. Then I realized that Leon, the League President's darling, doesn't need sponsoring. It was probably a good way for Rose to give him a sense of agency, with having to negotiate the sponsorship deals himself.

Also, Raihan is played up as Leon's rival. Though I've always had the feeling this was a very one-sided rivalry. Raihan is sponsored by Macro Cosmos. Not the power sector that basically runs his Gym, but the branch's banking sector. (I personally would have loved if Raihan was sponsored by the insurance, because a guy who approves having three different weather effects around old artifacts must be a blast to insure.) But this could be a hint at how Rose might have sensed that Leon was getting to closed off and tried to establish a rival for him.

    Lusamine in SM: JP/EN Comparison

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 06:04 AM PDT

This is just something that I noticed/thought of when I was playing through Pokémon Moon again, but in Japanese; there's a slight shift in tone in the scene before final battle against her in Ultra Space that caught my attention. Some choice quotes and rough translation below.

    English Script

    (Lillie)
"You always do that... It's just like it was back at Aether Paradise... Only thinking of yourself and what you want..."

    (Lusamine)
    "What...? And why shouldn't I!"
"I can live here in a world filled with only the things that I love! And I will live here!"
"I don't care if you are my child or not!"
"I don't care if you were loyal to me or not!"
"I don't care if you're the rarest Pokémon there is in the world or not!"
"If you're not beautiful enough to be worthy of my love, then I don't NEED you!"

    Rough Translation

    (Lillie)
...you're always like this. Back in Aether Paradise! And even here now! All you do is think about yourself!

    (Lusamine)
... and why are you only saying this now of all times?
    I mean, can't you see?!
    All I want!
All I want is to live in a world surrounded only by the things I like!
And no matter whether you're my own child! No matter how much you revere or admire me! No matter how rare of a Pokemon you are! If you're not something beautiful I can love, then I don't need anything from you!

Where the English script puts it across as "beautiful enough to be worthy of my love", with the Japanese "愛を注げる美しいもの" there is only a loose correlation between being "beautiful" and "lovable". In fact, while "worthy" suggests some disdain, "愛を注げる" simply conveys one "gifting" love to another, so to say. This makes her feel much more open and vulnerable in the Japanese script.

I also found that while the English version weighs more on roles and relationships with "loyalty", the Japanese version shows that she both understands and recognises Guzma's feelings with 慕って (and by extension, Lillie's feelings probably), only to acknowledge that she cannot possibly answer to them - - not (only) because she doesn't want to, but (also) because she is incapable of doing so.

    And also here:

    English Script

    (Lusamine)
"But you changed. You've become ugly. Ever since you met this boy/girl <player>... and learned to defy your own mother! <Player>! You hateful little Trainer! How dare you intrude upon this world that was meant for Nihilego and me? It is not to be borne!"

    Rough Translation

"Now you've learnt to even go against your mother like this... You've changed into something so ugly, ever since you met this <player>...
    <Player>...!
You despicable Trainer, now you've even come knocking on this world of Nihilego and mine...
I won't let you get your way! "

There's a pretty interesting flow here in both versions. They're almost the same in both versions, but in English, with the line "Ever since you met this boy/girl <player>... and learned to defy your own mother!", the emphasis is placed on outrage regarding Lillie's rebelling, before she redirects her anger to you: the cause behind her Lillie's change. In the Japanese script, she starts instead by contemplating Lillie's change, and then recognising you as the cause. Her next lines are then solely focused on you, thinking that having ruined her daughter for her, you have now come to ruin her world.

These nuances can still be teased out in the English script, but I feel like the Japanese just packs a sucker punch right at you. Instead of just someone who's obsessed with Nihilego and the Ultra Beasts, something much more vivid is shown: a woman who's eternally in a siege mentality and feels that everything she loves is being taken away from her, so she wants to preserve those moments of beauty she once knew, and hates all things that change and don't go her way in an almost juvenile manner. In that last scene, what she hates is not the fact that Lillie and the protagonist are there to defile her sanctuary, but the fact that the protagonist is basically an "Other" that takes away her happiness and is now trying to do it again after she's found some relief. Her fight against the protagonist is literally her last rage-fuelled stand against the world as a shattered human being. That's what I think anyways. I find it extremely tragic.

Thinking of fake signature Pokémon moves, day 166: Carvanha and Sharpedo

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 07:04 AM PDT

I am coming up with at least 1 fake move that would be exclusive to 1 Pokémon or an evolutionary line of Pokémon. I am going in Pokédex order, and I will skip every Pokémon or evolutionary line that already has a Pokémon in it that has a signature move. Signature Z-moves or G-Max moves don't count. Also, I don't make moves for Pokémon to make them better in battle. While it may make them more usable, that is not my intent most of the time, I just make moves to give the Pokémon something they need, deserve or are said they can do, but aren't able to do with their current movesets.

The move for Carvanha and Sharpedo is called Crush Fang, a Dark-Type Physical move with 115 base power, 100% accuracy and 5 PP. It deals 25% recoil damage to the user and has a 50% chance to lower the target's Defense by 1 stage.

I made the move for them because if I would give them any move, it would have to be Dark-Type. Sharpedo is known as the "bully of the sea" and both are very brutal and aggressive. Bite and Crunch are both Dark-Type biting moves, and Carvanha and Sharpedo are both based on fish that have very powerful bites and extremely sharp teeth, and of course, have very strong jaws themselves. So naturally, I combined these aspects to form their move, Crush Fang. It is a biting move, so Strong Jaw will boost its base power. I added the recoil to the move so that the move had a drawback. Also, since the move is called Crush Fang, I feel like it would only be appropriate to think that the user would use almost all the force that its jaws can use in 1 bite, which could hurt them, but I guess that might just be my logic.

The reason the move can also lower the target's defense is because when getting bitten, your skin essentially gets pierced with sharp teeth, making other attacks in those areas hurt even more. Considering how big Sharpedo's mouth is and how strong its bites are, I made the chance of the opponent's Defense dropping 50%. It may be too high if we look at how (un)balanced the move is, but since the user will receive 25% recoil, it will receive more damage when using this move on a Pokémon with lowered Defense, so yeah. It can of course still use other moves against an opponent with lowered Defense from this move, so I'm not sure if I should keep it like this or if I should adjust some stuff about Crush Fang.

I'd love to hear feedback or questions about my ideas, and if you have any ideas for signature moves for Pokémon, I'd love to hear them, I might use the ideas (with your consent of course)! Even though this is a daily thing, or at least, I'll try to keep it daily, I don't think I'll be consistent with the time of day I post another idea.
