TPC has cancelled their Sword and Shield launch event at the Tokyo Skytree Pokemon Centre where Masuda, Ohmori and other devs would appear, due to “operational reasons”. Some are saying it’s due to threats made towards the devs but others are saying they just want to avoid public backlash.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 03:30 AM PST

    Official tweet here

EDIT: there has only been speculation as to the real reason for the event cancelation. Whether there were threats or not is not clear as of yet, but I have personally not seen any proof of them other than people speculating that they happened.

Pokemon Battle Revolution (2006) - 493 fully animated Pokemon, including entering & fainting, moving and combat || SWSH (2019) - 400 Pokemon, 318 blatantly ripped from 3DS, no new animations, no movement, static JPEG combat.

Feast on it. SWSH is a slap in the face in all aspects. Everything is a cut corner, from the obviously upscaled 3DS graphics, to the ripped models, data, and old animations whilst claiming to have cut over half the Pokedex to "improve" these things. Keep in mind, Battle Revolution was also a spinoff, not the full introduction of the main series to console.

By all means, if you want to enjoy it, go ahead, but just because you like garbage, doesn't disregard the facts.

"It's not fair to compare BotW, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros Ultimate, or literally any other Switch title to Sword/Shield!"

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 08:48 AM PST

    Because reasons. /s

I seriously don't understand it. GF had all the opportunity in the world to do something truly special here. Instead we're getting a lackluster DS port with half the content, worse animations than freaking Stadium, the same graphics found on Sun/Moon, and of course the inexplicable Dexit. All for 20$ more.

Meanwhile, other titles found on the Switch (many of them over 3 years old now!) have either revolutionized their franchises, or straight up perfected their roots. Many received perfect scores in critical reviews, many received GotY nominations. Those titles have often been cited as the best in their game franchise history! Meanwhile, GF haven't done a damn thing except piss a bunch of fans off. And they don't even seem to care! It's honestly shameful, and I wish the people defending GF would open their eyes and realize that they're being played.

That's not even mentioning the fact that those other critically acclaimed titles on the Switch aren't from the #1 biggest media franchise in the freaking world, but whatever.

So why shouldn't we be comparing S/S to what's already available on the Switch? How is it OK that 3 year old titles available on Switch (which also sold for 60$ at launch) make S/S look like some amateur 5$ indie title?

How the new Fossil Pokemon Came to be

I realized that God himself didn't make the cut and a few other thoughts collided with that idea, and this comic was born. I had fun trying to draw scientists from the games and throwing a few pokemon details into the backdrop.

I also wasn't sure if this was art or art/venting but went with the latter because dexit joke :P

Thanks for all the suggestions, y'all! It was a close race but then I lost count. The compromise will be a different gen family each day in ascending order.

Also, because I can't post on the weekend due to the sub's rules (didn't think about that in advance - whoops) I will post three on Monday. A nice reprieve for those that don't like this bit. Happy weekend!

Dexit is even worse in Denmark, the game only contains 3 new Pokemon here!

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 09:47 AM PST

The game may be light on Pokémon, but it has added the best thing I could have ever hoped for...

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 05:47 AM PST

The ability to take the Pokémon that you caught during the play through and make him/her a competitive Pokémon. Changing natures, maxing EVs, maxing IVs, changing abilities, and transferring egg moves all now exist in the game, which is huge news. You no longer have to chuck your Machamp that carried you through the game because he was Rash and didn't have Bullet Punch. You can simply just adjust him to get him ready for battle. This is incredible.

Do I wish the Pokédex was complete? Of course, but this is truly incredible

No matter where you fall in this debate, please don’t attack the developers

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 05:30 AM PST

yes it is okay to be upset and not buy the games (that's where i fall in this debate). it is also okay to enjoy the games. but please, keep in mind that these are actual people making these games and their well-being are just as important as anyone else's. vote with your wallet and let your voice be heard but don't attack the creators over it. i know most of you know this but i just thought that a reminder wouldn't hurt.

SW/SH has worse online functions than gen 7 games (small spoiler)

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 04:04 AM PST

Seriously, the game has NO GTS TRADING. So now to get the version exclusives or trade for specific Pokémon is going to be even more of a chore.

(Spoiler) draw myself and my Galar PKM team. Have you picked your favs yet?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 04:41 PM PST

Just a minor grievance, but it really bothers me that Mudbray and Mudsdale are in Galar because lore wise it makes no sense...

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 08:20 AM PST

Mudbray is supposed to be only found in Alola:

Because it was hunted nearly to extinction when it lived all over the world, it is believed to run wild only in Alola.

So what the hell is it and its evolution line doing in Galar?

And yes, there are lots of Pokemon that don't really have a reason to exist in Galar (what are all these jungle Pokemon doing in Galar) and there are lots of Pokemon that SHOULD be in Galar (Lillipup? Where are you?) that you have to wonder what's going on with GameFreak's decision on which Pokemon fit the Galar region.

Gigantamax Pokemon may not be breedable in Sword and Shield

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 05:44 AM PST

    https://i.imgur.com/gL5azxo.png

The leaker posted this image of a Charmander that hatched from an egg. Note that there is no Gigantamax symbol in the top right of the profile page.

It appears that Gigantamax Pokemon may be locked behind raids, and that any attempt to breed those Pokemon will result in versions of those Pokemon that are unable to Gigantamax.

Not sure if this has been posted but the JP Necrozma you get for preordering SW/SH can't even be transferred to Gen 8...

    Galar region full pokedex leak

    Secret Club Necrozma event information

As stated in the title, I thought it was funny that the JP shiny secret club Necrozma you get for preordering Sword and Shield can't even be transferred to the new games, along with almost every other previous legendary pokemon. I know its just beating a dead horse at this point but hopefully the pokedex will be expanded in a free DLC later down the road.

Edit: Galar dex, not gen 8

(Spoiler) Worst part about Dexit for a Returning Player who hasn't played every Pokemon game

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 07:58 AM PST

    Preface: Pokemon games I have played = RBY ; GSC ; RSE ; FR/LG and 14 years later... LGP/LGE

I know a lot of people are upset their favorite pokemon will not be included in the next game, but for me that's only a surface issue. The worst part for me personally is that I 100% will not see a lot of pokemon I was actually getting hyped up to see and use that I've missed in the last 14ish years. Yeah it sucks I won't see Nidoking or Skarmory or Aggron in the next gen but it's actually worse that I won't see the Shinx evo line, Sandile evo line, Tyrunt evo line, Rockruff evos and the starters for each one of those generations + evolutions and much more in Sw/Sh.

I'd like to thank whoever did the leaks. You saved me from spending $100+ and being disappointed.

For anyone interested I also made a spreadsheet of the Pokemon that make it to Galar this sheet has statistics on Pokemon types that made the cut and has separate pages for each region as well.

Any other returning players upset about missing out (again) on some of the newer Pokemon?

I genuinely believe that the backlash GameFreak is getting would be significantly less if they were honest with us instead of lying

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 10:30 AM PST

Don't get me wrong, they would (and still deserve) the backlash for being incompetent, but to me I'd rather them be honest then lie to us. All they gotta say is that they weren't prepared for the transition from handheld to console and that they ended up having to cut 50% of the Pokémon because of their incompetence. Instead, they gave us false hope that they made new models and dynamic animations when that is clearly not a completely honest answer. The backlash would probably be gone if they included free updates to give us the mons that were culled. Knowing how they couldn't add like 20 Mega evolutions (rip) that were introduced from ORAS to XY via an update, I doubt this will actually happen.

Nintendo refunded my Sword preorder from the eshop

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 03:09 PM PST

Just an FYI it is possible. I used their live support chat, explained why I was upset with the misleading promotion for the game (cut so many Pokemon). The agent said she would forward it onto management where they would decide. And then I got this email today: Screenshot

So they are aware of our annoyances and will refund preorders.

Do people realize that Dexit isn't the main issue? Like, at all?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 12:10 PM PST

Dexit is not the main issue that Sword and Shield have.

To all the defenders of SwSh who just use the same "I dont bring my past poke.on anyway and just use whats in the game, so these will be the same as any other pokemon game for me." You are missing the point.

While Dexit is the straw that broke the camel's back, and finally made people realize for a moment how SwSh were shaping up, the real reason myself and many others i have talked to are pissed about SwSh is quite deeper then just Dexit.

    1. The games look like 3DS Ports.

The expectation for a game series moving from handheld to a much more powerful console is that the new games will make use of that new power and make changes. From what we have seen of the trailers(and before anyone pipe up with "We haven't seen the final game yet" Trailers are supposed to be the selling point for a game, showing the game at its best".) The games have made no strides to change the formula or innovate in any meaningful way.

Battles still play out as static fights with no real movement or animation. They STILL look worse then Pokemon Coliseum and XD. The overworld is still devoid of anything. Just random NPCs just standing in a single spot doing nothing and pokemon randomly appearing from nowhere.

There is very stong evidence that these games have just copy/pasted assets from the 3DS games. From all the IDENTICAL Pokemon models and Animations, to the Rival using Hau's exact "Excited" animations, and even the pokemon walking animations from SuMo.

And the thing that makes it all worse, it the fact that Gamefreak expressly stated that the reason for the Dexit culling was to improve animations. Which as we have seen, was a complete lie.

    1. SwSh's contemporaries make it look bad.

Segwaying from no.1, we look at all the other DS/3DS franchises that moved to Switch or the other Consoles.

Dragon Quest. DQ9 was a DS game, while it had some fantastic qualities the nature of the DS held it back greatly. Battles were stiff with relatively simple animations, the overworld was very flat with no real variation of terrain and segemented into several small areas that required loading. All the character models were also chibi styled with simple designs and animations.

And then the series moved to home consoles with Dragon Quest 11. It overhauled almost everything from the DS. Maps were larger and almost seemless, teeming with life, quest givers, and monsters that interacted with the world. They added voice acting. Character models were now Full sized with much more detailed designs and animations. Battles were revamped and given different forms of combat, with the ability to move your character for atleast the sense of more active combat. They innovated in quite a few aspects and took advantage of the Switches added power to make a modern AAA game.

Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem, Zelda, and Mario have all seen significant changes like these aswell. Meanwhile SwSh continue to do effectively nothing. They cut Megas and Z-moves for Dynamaxing, its effectively the same thing. Battles are still the exact same as they have been since Red and Blue. The core gameplay loop is also the exact same as Red and Blue. But this brings me to...

    1. The Price and Versions(And Ultra)

These games have no reason to be $60. At all. What are we getting in SwSh to warrent an extra $20? Because from the way I see it, those that are buying these games are paying an extra $20 for less content then in USUM. The confirmed Total Dex number in SwSh is 400. There were 403 in the regional dex in USUM. Meanwhile USUM still had access to the Nat Dex's additional 400+ pokemon.

So already, Paying more for less content. But it gets worse. The Galar region is also much smaller then Alola just by going off of the main maps. And according to the SwSh leaker, SwSh are only about 30 hours long including post game content(that there is only about 2 hours of) meanwhile the average time to beat just the main story of USUM is about 40-50 hours, plus an additional 10 or so worth of postgame content.

    So in short:

SwSh-$60 for 400 Pokemon and 30 hours of game.

USUM-$40 for 800+ Pomemon and 50 hours of game.

And to add to that, why do we in 2019 still need 2 versions of the same game? This is a criticism of the series as a whole as of late. Just why? Atleast games like Fire Emblem Fates different versions had dramatically different gameplay and stories to justify their split into multiple versions. And they even gave you significant discounts for buying the other versions if you owned one already.

Pokemon though? Same exact game, story, everything. With the exception that they replace the legendary and 3 or so pokemon lines between versions. Meanwhile you can obtain said pokemon through GTS within minutes anyway, making the difference null. So the only reason they do it is to prey on the superfans who, just like buying SwSh, will buy any flaming dumptruck with the Pokemon Logo etched on the side.

    1. Technical Performance

These games run poorly. Going off the trailers, the games look to run at 20fps at all times. With even bigger dips in the Wild area and Raid battles. For a $60 AAA game made in the highest grossing franchise on the freaking planet, that's unacceptable. Add to that the low draw distance, popin, and poor environment textures it just makes these games look incredibly rushed and/or low effort.

TLDR: These games are ultimately underwhelming and we should expect more. Especially when they are charging more money for them then past games while also cutting content.
