    [Rebuild Tuesday] Braviary

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 09:00 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

Welcome to this week's edition of Rebuild Tuesday, a weekly event we're doing along with our Discord!

The goal of this event is for you guys to get a chance to rebuild a Pokémon once a week! What do we mean by that? Well we will be looking to find Pokémon who just can't seem to find a niche in their tiers or the current competitive scene and finding ways to revitalize them! This means thinking about new moves, stats, or typings that help give the Pokémon in question a new role.

    This week's Pokemon is Braviary!

    #628 Braviary (Japanese ウォーグル Warrgle)

    Valiant Pokémon

With its brave disposition, it fears nothing—not even death. Ancient Alolan people respected it, referring to it as "the hero of the sky." It's thought that people disturbed their habitats in the past, so Braviary banded together to fight back.

    Braviary's Base Stats:

    • HP: 100
    • Attack: 123
    • Defense: 75
    • Sp. Attack: 57
    • Sp. Defense: 75
    • Speed: 80

    Smogon Info

    Introduction:

    • No Pokemon screams patriotic more than Braviary. When you hit the Brave Bird with this Pokemon, you can already hear Team America's famous tune play. With a great attack stat, good offensive abilities, good movepool, access to setup, and access to recovery, Braviary is nothing to sneeze as when it comes to late-game sweepers and wallbreakers. However, not all is good for the birb, as Stealth Rocks, strong special attackers, and physical walls can stop its momentum with ease. Braviary sets can vary, but some of the most used are Defiant Flynium-Z or Fightium-Z with Bulk Up and Defiant Leftovers with Bulk Up, Substitute, and Roost. Choice Band/Scarf is also common.
    • Braviary began to sweep the nation in gen 5 in the NU tier. It bumped up to RU in gen 6. It didn't gain anything new to use.
    • Braviary went back down to NU in gen 7. Braviary boasts a great attacking stat, a respectable movepool, a good offensive ability in Defiant, access to setup in the form of Bulk Up, and access to recovery in the form of Roost. However, using Braviary can be a bit tricky at times; it relies on hazard removal for Stealth Rocks since it's not the bulkiest Pokemon in the world, it can be revenge killed or at the very least crippled by physical walls, and many special attackers who outspeed can revenge-kill it with ease. Overall, Braviary is a solid Pokemon.

What changes (e.g. new moves, stats, abilities or typings) would you give to Braviary to give it a fair shot in the OU meta?

In addition to ways to make this Pokémon competitively viable again, feel free to discuss your likes and dislikes about this Pokémon, be they from your playthroughs of the main series or side games, your success or failure with this Pokémon competitively, any cool fan artwork (with the source) featuring this Pokémon that you'd like to share, or anything else!

We'd also suggest checking out our Discord each Tuesday for live discussion on these topics as well!

Voting options for next week's Pokémon will be edited in here and we'll run a one day poll tomorrow before announcing the winner on Thursday. This will then give you some extra time to think of how to revamp the winning Pokémon before the next Rebuild Tuesday rolls around. For today though, PM me (/u/SnowPhoenix9999) if you have any recommendations for a Pokémon that could use a rebuild!

New Sonic Trailer Shows What Happens When a Company Listens to Their Fans

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:12 AM PST

I just watched the new Sonic Trailer. After the backlash of the original trailer, they delayed the movie, and spent months reworking the special effects so that the fans would be satisfied. You know what? It was totally worth it. The new trailer looks great, the movie looks fun (if still a bit cheesy), and I went from not having any interest in it, to now I'm definitely going to take my family to the theater when it comes out.

I feel like Game Freak could learn a thing or two here. Instead of doubling down and saying "take it or leave it," they reworked the Sonic movie because they wanted fans to enjoy it as much as possible. I'm sure the filmmakers had already put a lot of heart into the project before the first trailer released, and I'm sure they were hurt by the original reactions, but it's how they handled that with total class that is so impressive. They didn't treat it like it was just theirs, they respected that the character belongs to everyone. Honestly, even if the movie ends up not being that good, it's going to get my money because they've shown me that they really care for the character and the material. That means a lot to fans.

Just something to think about with the immanent release of Sword and Shield in a few days. If Game Freak would listen to the fans, and show that they really care, that would make a HUGE difference here. Even a "we hear you, and more content and updates are on the way" would go a long way toward repairing the damage that they've done, and a lot more fans would be willing to give these games a chance.

One culled Pokémon family every day until Dexit is reversed - Day 8

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 01:03 AM PST

It is at times like this that I appreciate that the leaks are happening

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 03:11 AM PST

To the one who managed to obtain the game cart earlier than release, dumped the file and disseminate it among other players, you have my sincerest gratitude. I was still on the fence few days ago to buy the game thinking that the game cant really be that bad. But after today, seeing all this clips (pop ins, missing music, removed moves, game freezing etc.) I have decided to just skip this game hoping to somehow make a small contribution in the community. And of course, thanks to all the players who managed to find this issues just a day after the leaks. You guys are the true MVP!

Edit: May I also just add that seeing how you can just one hit Gigantamaxed pokemon gym leaders is a real dealbreaker. Pokemon is an easy game as it is. So having exp share always on and that you can easily outlevel your opponents just makes the game more trivial.

June 2018; "Tsunekazu Ishihara says 2019 Switch RPG will be something Longtime fans have waited for."

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:48 AM PST

This didn't age well, at all.

I''m still remember how hyped the first trailer was...only for the boat to sink to the bottom of the Marianna's Trench over the following months.

Here's some quotes from Ishihara that didn't age well:

    • "The new title coming out in the second half of 2019 will be a completely different game [from Pokémon Let's Go]. It is not an entry game, but a game that we want longtime fans of the Pokémon series to look forward to."
    • "The game will give a good understanding of what an evolved Pokémon game looks like after it has continued to succeed the traditions of Game Freak."
    • "We want to make Pokémon fans say 'this is what I've been waiting for' by delivering a brand-new product packed with gameplay elements and plenty of new Pokémon to encounter."

So games journalists are just going to ignore every issue with Pokemon Sword and Shield and shower it with positivity when the review embargo lifts, right? Because that's all they've been doing since Dexit became apparent.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 04:16 AM PST

Game journalists have already decided to lump anyone who is dissatisfied with the game into the "entitled" camp (there is no such thing as a sense of entitlement in a purchased product, but I digress), so we can totally expect Pokemon Sword and Shield reviews to just be glowing appraisals of the games despite the fact it looks like they're going to be the worst in the series history, right?

Because game journalists taking the developers side every single time whenever there's a consumer backlash is getting real annoying. It's like nobody is on our side.

[OC] Redesigning the Rolycoly Evolution Line

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 07:54 AM PST

I think it also needs to be said again that Pokémon is the NUMBER ONE highest grossing media franchise of ANYTHING in the world. There's no reason why their games shouldn't be technical masters, let alone the DISASTER SW/SH have shown themselves as.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 07:08 AM PST

Game Freak may be a 'small studio' comparative to others but there is 0 reason why that should be the case. There is 0 reason why their games should be so technically limited and weak performance wise (in SW/SH, that'd be reference to Dexit, pop-ins, lacklustre animations, rehashed character designs and movements *HOP*) and therefore it is completely, unequivocally justified for fans to be annoyed about this. I sincerely hope the games bomb in reviews so a shake-up is forced at Game Freak, because GOD, it needs to happen.

Complete list of all problems known so far in Pokemon Sword and Shield with data and/or proof for each problem

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:20 PM PST

Seeing as there's a lot of people that don't quite know the extent of the issues and that there's no real compilation of the problems, I feel like everyone needs a list with info and sources of each and every current problem with the games, it's a long list but I've tried to put it all together, it's not just dexit people.
I will post everything that is 100% confirmed and known so far, there's potentially other problems, but this is made as a somewhat "quick" digest with info that has been 100% proven, for anyone out of the loop that wants to know exactly what's happening with these games.

    1. The number of usable Pokemon has been cut, only less than half are now usable, known as Dexit, it means that you won't be able to use these pokemon in the new games, you won't be able to transfer them in, and you won't be able to do anything with them sans sticking them in home for the foreseeable future (Home will probably be a paid only subscription based service just like its predecessor), for all intents and purposes, these Pokemon are basically removed from the main games franchise and they will take probably years to come back, if ever.
An image with the cut/not cut pokemon can be found here, pokemon in green are confirmed to be in, pokemon in purple have galar forms, pokemon in yellow are in the data, but there's nothing for them, they could be leftover data like the items and other things, could be giveaway/event only, could only come from other games, etc, there's no way to know what's the plans for them at the moment, if any, pokemon in red are cut.
The excuse GF used for this culling was that it let's them work on delivering better animations and a more carefully crafted game, since they don't have to put more time and effort into redoing the models.
This is complete BS as the game polish is worse than ever, and the models seem to just be somewhat edited XY models.
    2. Just like the Pokemon cut, about 144 moves were removed, 99 moves excluding the let's go and other outlier moves, this includes extremely important and used mainstay moves like Hidden Power, return/frustration and Pursuit, on top of extremely old moves that have been there since gen 1, some of these moves were important for the viability of several Pokemon, which may cause them to be way less effective if not way worse when it comes to battles, on top of this, it also removed some SIGNATURE MOVES of certain Pokemon.
The full list for deleted mainstay pokemon moves can be found here
Attempts at transferring Pokemon with these moves will apparently get this message: "This move can't be used. It's recommended that this move is forgotten. Once forgotten, this move can't be remembered."
    3. Short game, the first streamer beat the champion at around the 14 hour mark, while he did this by skipping a fair amount of trainer battles, other streamers are clocking in about 16-20 hours, seems like the average will be about 18 hours to beat the game.
Here's one of the many streamers, he's right before champion and clocking in at 14:34.
    4. The graphics are extremely mediocre, it constantly looks worse and less polished than LGPE, the textures are often inexcusable.
Examples of the bad graphics seen here
      1
      2
      3
      4
      5
      6
A comparison with LGPE can be seen here and here
Here's a game recently released for switch, another picture found here, the difference is unreal.
    5. There's constant graphical issues, not just low quality graphics, pop in is present at all points of the game due to bad coding, trainer models will also disappear mid battle when an attack with a high number of particles is used, this also happened in SM, however, SM moved the camera away to avoid people seeing it, they didn't even try this time.
This means it's either a carry over from SM and they just copy pasted most of the code, or they somehow have to remove the trainers to avoid a switch from somehow getting fps drops.
The pop-ins can be evidenced here and here
Trainers dissapearing mid battle can be evidenced here
    6. Animations, one of the main reasons why GF cut pokemon, at least in the interviews, are as shoddy as ever.
There's extremely lazy animation all over the game, from normal attacks to key moments in the game, such as the encounter with the box legendaries.
Most of the animations are also completely copy pasted from older games, one example seen here with Hau(the entire character of hop is basically a copy paste of hau.)
Most of the animations for the camp are also copy pasted from xy amie, evidenced here
Pokemon battle animations are just as bad as before, if not worse, pictured here is a pokemon headbutting with its feet.
Another example found here, THE MAIN BOX ART POKEMON CINEMATIC, THIS IS THE GAME CLIMAX, another example on the other version found here
In fact, it could be considered way worse if compared to the last gen, example of upscaled USUM cutscenes. (Notice the graphical change isn't that big, the only difference here is increasing the resolution)
    7. Cutscenes and restrictions, like previous Pokemon games the cutscene and story forcing and restrictions are insane this time around, seems to be even more intrusive and in your face than before at times, while keeping the same level of cutscene intrusion than past gen.
The video for this point was taken down, but if you wish to see this you should be able to find it by searching the gameplay clips/streams online
    8. The difficulty, just like the cut scene problem, this carries over from earlier games and it's even worse. There were constant heals, to the point where in the first routes you're not able to go beyond 3 trainer fights without getting a full heal.
The first streamer avoided fights and didn't train at all, it still was one shotting gym leader dynamaxed ace pokemon. This can be seen here.
    9. Post-Game is almost non-existant, as usual since masuda-Ohmori started directing, there's no frontier, there's also no frontier like facility.
The post game consists of battle tower and a very short sequence of missions where you beat some dynamax pokemon for your rival to catch the other legendary
Not only this, but the battle tower is also an inferior version of past towers, it doesn't have super single nor super double battles, it has no triple battles and there's no "tower bosses", it's just random trainer npcs after another.
    10. Problems with game design and behavior, beyond difficulty and progression, there's other problems in the overall game design.
Examples of this is not being able to catch Pokemon in the wild areas until you got a badge allowing you to do so, which usually covers your current level.
Meaning if you find a level 31 shiny or a level 31 pokemon you really want, you won't be able to catch it until you go and beat the next gym.
For shiny hunters, this one is gonna be really important, you cannot see if your Pokemon is gonna be shiny or not in the overworld, this means that on top of the badge limit, you also got this potential problem.
      Evidenced here.
    11. Removed past features with virtually no new additions, seems like this is a mainstay in Pokemon, removing older features so they become one of a time gimmicks, but unlike earlier titles this new game doesn't adds anything new except dynamaxing, which is limited to gyms only.
This particular gen removes Mega Evolutions and Z moves, mega evolutions in particular were a huge deal and seeing them suddenly removed means that there's little reason to get involved with any new addition, no matter how mainstay or how much GF forces it when it will very soon be gone.
A list of these removed features can be found here.
    12. No scaling whatsoever, models are the same sizes of XY (giving more plausibility to them not really redoing the models).Any argument against this is thrown out of the window when dynamaxing exists, since the models seem to be edited XY models then the problem remains.
Here's the non scaled model in sword and shield.
Here's an scaled model, released in a game that came out 15 years ago for a the Nintendo Gamecube, something way less powerful than the switch.

    13. No GTS, retera thread on the discovery found here, the only strings that refer to the GTS are leftovers from Let's Go code, as seen here and here.
This is most likely due to Home(this means that you will have to pay for switch online+home for services older games already included)
Thanks to /u/c_will for pointing this one out and gathering the info.

    14. A 20 dollar price increase for less content than earlier 3DS games, with subpar graphics and removal of features, an overall shoddy release for a higher price point.

    15. Performance, game is locked to 30 fps, and while that's not a big issue by itself, this is coupled with slowdown at certain moments such as dynamaxing, it can drop fps to the floor and turn the game into a slideshow for a while.
      Evidenced here.
Still gathering more info on this one, as it's a relatively new occurrence that hasn't happened to all users, take this one with a grain of salt

    16. The overall lack of quality, polish and effort put into the game, this is all the minor/somewhat minor but still very telling problems with the game.
This is apparent in many ways all throughout the game, things like the wrong backgrounds or just voids for pokemon battles.
Two example of the wrong backgrounds seen here and here One example of the void background seen here (these happen on indoor fights and some non indoor but scripted battles)Examples of backgrounds on indoor and everywhere else in both LGPE and colosseum, seen here and here.
Then there's complete lack of music in the game story most important moments, seen here.
      Starters are also shiny locked.
The entire world freezes when using certain objects, as seen here.
To this, you add up the emptiness of the wild area and the badly implemented weather changes that don't make much sense, both seen here
No animation for flying, no elite 4, no victory road, etc, this is added to all the other problems that show the lack of effort put into them.

    This franchise deserves better.

    You deserve better.

These games are not only a huge step down from earlier titles, but it goes beyond what used to be already barely tolerable standards to way below standards, keep in mind this is the biggest, most profitable franchise on earth.

This is the first time a pokemon main game is released on console, people were excited for game freak to finally do whatever they wanted and it's been done with the most minimal of efforts, all the money you've spent on Pokemon didn't went on making this a better game, it went straight into the pockets of the people in charge, those that made sure this was made with the most minimum effort and those that cut corners.

Companies that made games decades ago on hardware less powerful than the switch shouldn't be doing a better job than game freak, and companies doing work in the switch have completely obliterated game freak when it comes to developing a video game.

Keep in mind that your purchase of these games causes this:

    • Continue the yearly release cycle that makes the games rushed and forces the devs to insane crunch time, creating the low morale problem
    • Tells them that you're ok with these problems, and they will keep lowering the bar and cutting corners on development
    • Your money will continue going into the pockets of those responsible for these problems

I implore you to be a smart consumer, I've played Pokemon since I red, ever since I was a child, I can no longer support this franchise, I probably won't buy a Pokemon product ever again if this is gonna be how they're gonna treat the games and its fans.

Thank you u/Restinpeacesquirtle for helping me with extra footage and proof.

Please voice your concerns to Nintendo! They want to hear from us!

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 08:24 AM PST

I was able to leave feedback with a representative to pass along here:

EDIT: I was told to contact the Pokemon company directly as well:

    https://support.pokemon.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360000019993

Remember to be respectful and keep it brief. Remember to let them know that you will be unable to buy the games or any future Pokemon games until we can use ALL of the Pokemon.

EDIT: I'm using dexit as my reason, feel free to comment to them about anything else you're upset about. It is best to still financially motivate them by mentioning not buying the game or a canceled preorder if that applies to you

You can also send a physical letter to them at this address:

    4600 150th Ave NE Redmond, WA 98052

Unhappy physical letters piling up at thier offices will leave a huge message!

Sound control now requires a key item

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 11:23 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/gallery/uoyK6fi

    What the actual heck.

Gamefreak has locked the ability to adjust in game volume to a key item that could very easily be passed over and forgotten. Not only is this bad game design, I dare say it borders on asshole design. A lot of people probably want to customize the sounds in their games, without having to just turn off the volume on their switch/tv entirely to do so.

In game options should NEVER have to be locked behind an item, especially one so easily passed over. Honestly I'm shocked any game company would even allow for this kind of crap to be pulled.

I mean there are a lot of things in this game that can be somewhat justified, but this, this is not one of them.

Also here is the original tweet for reference https://twitter.com/thatdude433/status/1194066042336755712?s=20

Edit: I'd like to add, that this is a huge middle finger from Gamefreak to people with hearing issues who need accessibility options. The fact that any game would do that just makes this even worse. Or what about people who don't want to have to adjust master volume for every single game? This is just plain stupid, if not malicious (though perhaps Hanlon's razor is in play).

Don't let anyone tell you that not buying SwSh won't make a difference.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 08:54 AM PST

I see many folks saying "It doesn't matter if you boycott the game, Sword and Shield will still sell extremely well!" Well Yes, Sword and Shield will still sell millions, but that doesn't necessarily mean Pokemon Sword and Shield and Gamefreak will remain unaffected by an angry fanbase.

Even Pokemon is not immune to an unsatisfied fanbase.

Take Pokemon Black and White for example. Pokemon Black and White was infamous for removing past-gen Pokemon until post-game, essentially being a soft reboot. Even Pikachu, the series mascot, was unobtainable. The result? A 2 million decrease in sales.

    Pokémon Diamond & Pearl : 17.67 million > Pokémon Black & White: 15.64

Pokemon Sword and Shield is arguably more controversial than Pokemon Black and White, is on a console with a smaller playerbase (Though the Switch userbase is rapidly growing), and is removing fan favorites entirely out of the game. This is not mentioning many technical issues that also plague the game. Of course, Pokemon Sword and Shield will still sell, Maybe, it'll even sell out at launch. But it's the long-term numbers that matter.

Now, some might say that 1 or 2 million additional players lost is a rather small reduction. However, every company wants growth, not stagnation. Pokemon has been stagnating as of late, especially when compared the the success of Pokemon Go. Gamefreak will notice any declines, even a minor one, because they are a corporation that wants their products to grow.

Never forget, these are large corporations we are dealing with here, where even 500$ million on the first 3 days of a games's release can be considered unsatisfactory: https://www.barrons.com/articles/activision-blizzard-slumps-as-call-of-duty-sales-disappoint-1539880695

Just because a game is selling millions doesn't mean a company is satisfied with those numbers.

So don't get discouraged if you feel like boycotting this game will go unnoticed. Gamefreak and Nintendo will notice this decline, just like they did the outrage.

    Edit: Grammar stuff.

Edit 2: Some have gotten the misconception that I am telling people not to buy SwSh. This is far from true. If you want to buy Sword and Shield, go ahead. Not stopping you. This post is aimed at those who have already decided not to buy SwSh, but feel as though it will go unnoticed.

Apparent leak suggests that the real reason Dexit occured is Game Freak screwed up the importer and could not fix it, and the PR plan to save Sword and Shield is to not admit this and "Listen to feedback" by adding the mons next gen when it's fixed.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:27 PM PST

Quick note: I'm just posting this since I've seen it and cannot confirm the truth of it myself. Don't shoot the messeneger and, of course as with all leaks of this nature, take with a grain of salt.

    https://i.imgur.com/RQ4oJwc.png

If this is true then this is super low.

Honestly Game Freak? I feel like I should say if you can't fix a importer don't make Pokemon games, but instead I'm gonna give some advice.

Admit you done goofed. Release a statement that Sword and Shield did not go as you planned. In that same statement, commit to fixing the issues in patches. We live in a day and age that patches are a common thing, and to be honest a lot of the issues with sword and shield can be fixed by doing so.

Dexit the fault of a failed importer? Commit to patching in other pokemon slowly as you fix this.

Animations are terrible because you had to redo them in a rush? Take some time to fix them then patch.

Had to cut moves because rushed? Patch.

Most of the things people are pissed at you about can be fixed by comitting to patching them at a later date. Hell, most people would understand since Game Freak is a tiny team.

During the starter selection screen, the starters will be shiny locked. Meaning you can't soft reset for shiny starters at the beginning of the game. In order to get shiny starters, you will have to breed them. This information has been datamined. Please share this information with anyone who might be interested in getting a shiny starter.

People change like the seasons, and so do Pokémon. Here’s an Autumn variant of Muk!

Do you think sword and shield were originally meant for the 3ds?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 07:48 AM PST

Ishihara thought the Switch was going to fail, so he probably thought they should just make another Pokemon game for the 3DS instead.

That would explain why the game looks like a slightly upscaled 3DS game instead of a high quality Switch game.

The Pokemon games usually looked pretty good for whatever system they were on, SW/SH look like great 3ds games, but look terrible on the Switch.

How characters appear would make sense on the 3ds with it being weaker and having a smaller screen size, which would help cover it up.

They scaled the Pokemon correctly in let's go, which was made for the Switch, while the 3ds games didn't scale the Pokemon correctly, just like in SW/SH.

Some moves cause the player character to disappear, which happened on the 3ds. They just moved the camera on the 3ds to hide it, the Switch being larger messed up the camera transition and they didn't feel like fixing it.

The sudden decision to cut the Pokemon probably happened when porting the game to the Switch, where they broke their importer, like that other post says.

It's weird they removed Pokemon following you when they had it working in Let's Go, most likely because the 3DS couldn't handle it and they didn't have time to add it in when porting to the Switch.

You should skip SW/SH and wait for the next ones, they will be made for the Switch from the start.

Decided to make a side-by-side comparison of two popular franchises

    So, I was wrong....

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 08:04 AM PST

I defended GF throughout the Dexit stuff, with the assumption that things like the map, Pokemon world and animations would be in a different league compared to previous games. Honestly, I do have Pokemon from previous games I have connections with, as I trained them hard, won multiplayer matches, grinder for hours with etc. I was willing to be okay with not having them as i'd have an amazing game on a console with far superior hardware than the DS, 3DS etc.

But after seeing the leaks of game snippets and screenshots of the environment, battle scenes and animations. I'm annoyed, so annoyed that I defended GF, hoping they'd release something worth of a home console. I'm joining the boycott Sword and Shield bandwagon. Screw this.
