Friendly reminder that whatever your stance is on Sw/Sh, keep your toxicity away from little kids. They just want to play the game. The politics of it does not need to ruin their experience.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:42 AM PST

Just watched some 14-15 year old make his younger sister cry going on about how Sw/Sh is "already a bad game and if you like it you're a bad person". She had a little Scorbunny plush and a Pikachu on her backpack and I could tell this was probably her introduction to Pokemon as a whole. Put things in perspective very quickly.

From the genwunners to the folks who started on D/P all of us had some feeling of loss when it came to Dexit and of course many of us have our respective complaints about the series' flaws, but that doesn't change the fact that there are still a bunch of little kids who look at every 'mon on the roster as a brand new creature they've never seen before with that pure wonder. They might be walking into their Sapphire, or Blue, or Diamond, what have you. Despite its shortcomings, the game could still be a massively positive experience for kids who at their core are just like we were some time ago. So feel free to have your opinions and boycott and express your frustrations, but for the love of god, leave the little kids out of it. It's not fair to them to ruin this experience so that they can suffer alongside us.

Edit: I appreciate the conversation this produced. Hopefully we can all allow the younger generation to experience this controversial chapter in Pokemon's history without getting wrapped up in its mess.

I'm gonna buy that girl a Sobble plush because any self-respecting fan knows Water is the superior starter yes I will die on this hill

Apologies to Popplio fans, just because I don't like it doesn't mean its bad

Gentle reminder that Dexit is due to corporate greed, not a lack of resources

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:40 AM PST

I don't blame the developers for anything when it comes to Dexit. I am sure that they did their best to give us the Pokemon that they did for Galar. But when the decision (likely from the executives) is made to cut 60% or so of all Pokemon from the game and REFUSING to add them in later via a patch of some sorts, I'm sure anyone can understand the fan base's reaction.

Pokemon is the largest media conglomerate franchise in the world. Don't tell me for a second that they didn't have the resources to bring every Pokemon into the game.

The decision to not add in all 850+ mons is due to corporate greed. Each generation, the initial games ALWAYS far outsell any subsequent games in the same generation (with exception of perhaps remakes). The reason for this is likely b/c even though the newer games always allow us to capture more Pokemon than were originally available in the first games (SM had 300 Pokemon, USUM had 400), there has been less incentive to buy the second set of games b/c we could always bring in these additional Mons from previous games.

Now that we can't do that with Gen 8, it's very likely that the second set of games (which I'm guessing will include somewhere around 500 - 600 mons total) will sell better than B2W2 or USUM did, since that's the only way we could play with these Pokemon in Gen 8.

Edit 1: No, I don't know the inner dealings of GameFreak, Pokemon, or Nintendo. But can you think of a better reason than trying to sell future games as to why we're not getting all 860~ (or so) Pokemon in this game? If the 3DS (an 8 year old game system, I might remind you) can handle 800, the Switch should be able to handle 860.

As a huge gen 4 fan, I don't want gen 4 remakes in this state.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 03:50 AM PST

My pokemon journey started with gen 4 (actually with PMD BRT) If gen 4 remakes shares a lot of similarities with gen 8 I don't want them to remake gen 4.

I'm still not a fan of dynamax/gigantamax and for the love of Arceus (rip) I don't want to see that gimmick in the gen 4 remakes

The always on exp share can go away too

Please don't nerf Cynthia or even the other trainers

Give your rival the superior starter again

    Keep the island Area's!!!

Make the Darkrai, cresselia, Arceus, heatran, regigas, shaymin and the creation trio events as an actual event. Don't give them for free in a pokemart...

Let the lake guardians roam over whole sinnoh again

I'm actually fine with only getting gen 1 - gen 4 Pokemon in the game

Please gamefreak don't cut corners in these remakes..

At 15 hours and 23 Minutes he's already at the Pokemon League on a Blind run.

In comparison the other pokemon games average completion time https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/358458974481285122/643445185824423950/Untitled.png

    source: https://howlongtobeat.com

It takes in comparison 26 hours to complete pokemon red in average according to the website.

The previous gen game with several cutscenes, Sun and Moon is at 33 hours for the mainstory.

Sword and Shield with also quite a bit of cutscenes, is at 15:34 on pokemon league. I suspect he will likely finish the league by the 17:00 mark in an unassisted run(since there are no guides online or whatsoever to help him)

[Spoiler] I can't begin to understand the removal of heal order

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 06:49 AM PST

As many other people I'm baffled for the removal of moves. And while there are many removed moves that are a staple like hidden power, return or pursuit, the one that I really cant wrap my head around is heal order.

Someone sat down and decided that Vespiquen was gonna be in the game, but that they had to take away heal order from her.

The fact that other than worrying about your favorite pokemon making it in the game you now have to hope they didnt uber nerf it for no reason at all is simply disgusting

Edit: a lot of people are pointing out that she still gets roost. That's beside the point. My point is the complete disregard they have for intellectual integrity and player choice that they're showing with this. She had roost even when she was introduced in gen 4,but they still decided to give her heal order because they believed in a unique pokemon with strong thematic expression of having 3 different unique moves. And then 4 generations later they remove one of it because they probably thought they could use the extra development time saved to work on a curry recipe or something

EDIT 2: SHE DOESNT GET ROOST ANYMORE EITHER. IM SPEECHLESS

Iwata would have been so disappointed if he saw the state of these new games.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 01:13 AM PST

Iwata singlehandedly was able to compress the data of Pokémon Gold and Silver so much, that they were able to add Kanto into the game as well. Almost two decades later and that's still the only game with two different regions in it. Just seeing the work he was able to do alone and comparing it to the work of a team of people and it's crazy to think that they truly can't add more into this game.

Pokemon Sword and Shield aren't console games, they're handheld games that happen to be on a console.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 01:57 AM PST

Despite the Nintendo Switch being both a console and a handheld, Game Freak's design philosophy hasn't changed, which is why Pokemon Sword and Shield are designed as if they were still only handheld games. They had no intention on making a true AAA console game like Super Mario Odyssey or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. During an interview, it was stated that if Nintendo had released another handheld, they would've developed for that instead of a console like the Switch.

This explains why Pokemon Sword and Shield still look and feel like upscaled 3DS games. They're basically designed as if they WERE 3DS games, and they really only use the Switch's much more powerful hardware to upscale the games to HD and to make small graphical improvements with bigger environments. To Game Freak, the Switch is a handheld, not a console, and they had no intention on making a console Pokemon game.

Everyone's imaginations went crazy when we found out the main series Pokemon games were coming to the Switch. We were all expecting revolutionary upgrades to the quality of the games and the graphics, and for the first time ever, have a true main series console Pokemon game that can compete with the best of the best. Instead, we got more of the same, only this time, with less the half of the Pokemon, because it's "too much for Game Freak to handle". Pokemon Sword and Shield have been really disappointing for people who were expecting the new games to been better than ever. Not only did the graphics disappoint, but then we found out about dexit and everyone lost all hope. It definitely didn't help when Game Freak decided they weren't going to be complete upfront and honest about the whole situation, only giving us vague reasons that didn't really hold up, like it was done to focus on improving the graphics and animations, and to balance the game. Now they're saying they could either have all the Pokemon, or focus on new features, and they chose the features.

Being disappoint with these games and the way things were handled is completely justified, After all, we were expecting a true console game that would revolutionize the franchise, but instead got more of the same with less than half of the Pokemon and a new $60 price tag.

On the other hand, Game Freak never meant for Pokemon to be anything other than a handheld series, and just because the new games are on the Switch now, doesn't mean they're going to try to compete with the quality of Nintendo's AAA console games. Considering the yearly release schedule and the relatively small development team, they clearly don't have the time and resources to do so.

Wishful Thinking: I Hope Nintendo Takes Over Pokemon

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 06:55 AM PST

I'm not gonna be over dramatic here, I'm just going to say my piece.

I think there are plenty of things to be excited about with the new games, but there are undoubtedly many things to be disappointed about.

It's hard for me to let myself not enjoy a Pokémon game for a lot of reasons. I've done my utmost to remain very positive and excited about these games, but it's also hard not to feel heartbroken by the changes that are being made.

(I mean, what even is the rationale behind the level catching limit? What the fuck are they even thinking?)

I can't really tell if Masuda really believes that he's making Pokémon the best it can be, or if he's just wanting to use the sales from the Pokémon name as a financial runway for other GrameFreak IP projects.

Either way, his small-studio mindset and his skewed perception of low gamer attention spans just cannot fit with Pokémon. Pokémon has outgrown Masuda and Gamefreak; this much is clear.

Every popular Nintendo franchise that made the transition to Nintendo Switch has been a hit - Breath of the Wild was a massive success, Mario Odyssey was incredible, SSBU - Amazing, and Animal Crossing looks like it's going to give players more creative freedom than ever.

Pokémon deserves the same treatment. I may very well still enjoy the new generation (and I am going into Friday full force setting myself up to enjoy it as I stated before.) I just think that Pokémon needs to be placed into more capable hands because GameFreak doesn't seem to get us, and we definitely don't get them.

P.S. - I get a little spark of rage any time I see the new game's rival... He just looks like a reskinned Hau in every way possible and I just can't unsee it.

Pokémon GO now has more different species of Pokémon in it than the current generation of main series games as of 2019. My, how the tables have turned.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 01:24 AM PST

    Title says it all.

Pokémon GO kinda rules now. It was a flaming garbage fire at launch, and barely resembled Pokémon at all. They've updated the shit out of it and Giovanni is currently attacking the entire world around you. These damn Team Rocket battles all over my campus have given me nonstop content. The Team Go Rocket Leaders are actually hard to beat, and you have to win 6 team rocket battles (and rescue the 6 Pokémon those grunts leave behind) to fight em.

All of this new content is just the icing on the cake though. There are currently 529 Pokémon registered to my Pokedex as "Seen". Now granted, I'm a level 40 player who's been playing since launch, and only really ever took a few months off, and that was only cause it was too cold to keep playing for the lack of content at the time.

    Then I got a dog...

Turns out having a real life partner that always wants to go on a walk makes walking more fun. I'm now walking ~100 km a week and have found myself having for more love for Pokémon than I ever did grinding out hatches or breeding in the main series games... the best part? I'm mostly Free to Play. Sure, I'll spend 15 bucks on a raid box occasionally when Shiny Mewtwo is around in raids for one week of the year. but I really enjoy this game without having to pay for it.

Pokémon Sword or Shield costs 59.99.

Oh, did I mention that we're probably getting the Galarian forms of the Pokémon already in the game?? Yeah, we've got the Alolan ones. Raichu's my favorite Pokémon, and the Alolan Raichu is my favorite shiny in my collection, it's been my buddy for over 1600 km (and counting!) Not as many km as my dog though

Look I ain't out here tryin to tell you good folk how to live your lives but I can tell you that I genuinely believe that Niantic loves Pokémon and the world they're building in Pokémon GO. I just don't see that in Game Freak anymore.

I think Game Freak knows they've got your money either way. Niantic has gotta win you over with their free gameplay enough to maybe get you to cave and buy pokecoins

    This shows.

Tl;dr: While Game Freak is taking Pokémon and features away, Niantic is only adding more. Gens 1-5 are already available. Team Go Rocket is invading your town, and in this game you're allowed to use your fucking Squirtle.
