Pokémon say their own name. That's one of the first things you learn about the franchise but I don't believe it's how Game Freak intended. In the games, Pokémon (aside from Pikachu, starting in Yellow version) make cries or roars like animals and the dialogue boxes are usually onomatopoeia of those roars.

In an interview, Masuda said that they "really consider what the purpose of the Pokémon's cry is. We consider what type of creature it is, its habitat, how it lives… all these kinds of things help to decide what style of cry it might have". I think that the anime chose to do the say their own names to add familiarity and marketability. Nothing reinforces your 150 monsters like them repeating their names over and over.

I find it really interesting and in some cases quite funny the anime 'mon who don't get to say their own name. Arbok is a classic from the original series who always said "Charboka!" I thought this was because the Japanese name would've been different, but nope! Just how the voice actor delivered the lines.

Some other wonderfully bizarre voices are Staryu (pointed out by u/VikingDeer), Electabuzz (pointed out by u/fiordaan) and the Regis, who are really just a wild ride!

However you like your Pokemon sounding, I guarantee it's better than ProZD's depiction.
