Hi all, with the recent pokemon LoL announcement I cant help but feel really disappointed. I started playing pokemon in gen 4, played pokemon black and black 2, then paused as I tragically lost my 3ds by dropping it in a pool. But anyways, as much as this is about praying to Arceus for a gen 4 remake, I want to talk about my pokemon experience.

Remember when you got destroyed by Cynthia? that pseudo legendary land shark that defies existence? or when the antagonist has zekrom/reshiram with a great story? I miss that, I really do. I just want to ask did anyone really ask for 3d graphics? Sure it's cool seeing pokemon in their err... shapes? but I'd say the sprites were just fine. It was never about the graphics, but the strategy, design and story that makes a pokemon game great. although by now I doubt I can say that with "a pokemon game" possible being referred to as pokemon LoL, pokemon tsum tsum, pokemon brush your teeth.

Here's my proposal for saving pokemon - a 2d game, with an above average difficulty (nothing like kaizo emerald but I'd guess insurgence?) with the budget on 3d animation being spent on story writing and pokemon designing. I dont need more charizard forms, I need more unique designs like spiritomb, cofagrigus, or even dracovish - yes, even that abomination. I hated its design at first but after reading its lore and considering the background of swsh, I like it as a pokemon. WE NEED MORE OF THAT. unique pokemon designs that aren't necessarily visually stunning, but creative in execution and interesting in its lore.

The animation for pokemon sprites in b2w2 is honestly the best way to present a pokemon, in my opinion at least. I am a die hard gen 4 stan, but even I have to give credit where it's due. I loved bw/b2w2's story and unova as a region. I loved how difficult Cynthia was and how my staraptor had to brave bird and chunk countless max revives to beat her. I dont really care about giving each gen a unique thing (mega/dynamax/jojo pose special move). I just want a good old, pokemon game.

So, for the game we all know and love, I hope this will one day happen. If arceus is god, then bidoof is pokemon's jesus. Let's all pray to bidoof for a gen 4 remake, amen.

One "look how they murdered my boy" sprite a day until I run out of sprites Part 1 - Hippowdon

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:55 PM PDT

    Hi, Pokemon fans,

I'm creating a series of posts showcasing some of the worst 3D sprites from Gen 6 and beyond.

    Here's Day 1 - Hippowdon.

    https://imgur.com/tegVhnz

This massive hippopotamus Pokemon which can crush tonnes in its jaw and creates sandstorms just from living... looks like a Potato with legs. Thanks, Game Freak.

Tune in tomorrow to see who's next.

Unpopular Opinion: This announcement has the potential to be the best thing to happen to the franchise in a long time, but not for the reasons you think.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:11 PM PDT

I'm not excited about Unite. I'm aware of how shitty Tencent is. Let's just get that out of the way right now. This is NOT a post defending the reveal today in the slightest. But, from a big picture perspective, there are a lot of good things that could come out of the implications of today.

    1. No mainline game this year.

We all remember how controversial Sword and Shield was. No matter what side you fell on during the Dexit controversy, one thing is glaringly obvious about the first entries to the 8th generation; they were underwhelming and had lots of problems. Generally speaking, I think most of the issues of Sword and Shield can be blamed on being rushed out for the Holiday 2019 release, and they were the fifth game in a row in a long string of annual releases on 3D systems, starting with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. I've seen a ton of criticism leveled at the last few entries in the franchise for being extremely linear, limiting in side content, and overall disappointing.

I was honestly scared that they were going to continue down this path, because Masuda stated that he wanted a new mainline game EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Obviously, with the many problems and shortcuts that were taken to get Sword and Shield out on time, that meant the quality of the games themselves would not have been priority in this process. Generation 4 is one of, if not THE most popular generation, and rushing a half-assed Sinnoh remake this year would have likely been a total disaster. Since we've passed the window of a mainline game being revealed, it's safe to say that we aren't getting a main series game this year, with the focus being shifted to the very well recieved and hyped DLC.

This hopefully means that the staff over at GameFreak working on whatever title they have planned for next year, (and we WILL have a mainline game, as it is the 25th anniversary of the franchise in 2021,) have some extra time to put more effort into making the game as good as it can be. I don't know how many people would have felt if the long awaited Sinnoh remake suffered from many of the issues that Sword and Shield/ORAS suffered from. This extra year gives them more time to fix the problems that the fans were EXTREMELY vocal about. If there were significant problems behind the scenes in Sword and Shield's development cycle, hopefully this means they'll take more care and slow things down. They're still making more money off of one copy sold, because they're $20 more expensive than the 3DS titles, and the DLC is another $30 on top of that. They have found a way to make up for their potential losses by skipping every other year to release a mainline game, and they can afford it.

    2. The climax of the mobile game pushback.

Ishihara, President of TPC, believed that the Switch was going to be a failure, and, due to the success of Niantic's Pokemon Go, believed that the only way for the franchise to survive, is to put more of a focus on mobile gaming. [https://www.businessinsider.com/pokemon-ceo-tsunekazu-ishiharan-nintendo-switch-fail-2017-9](He has since stated that he stands corrected.) Despite this, TPC pushed out Pokemon Masters, which was successful for a while, then fell off the face of the earth shortly after the hype died down, and is now pushing out Pokemon Unite.

The criticism and backlash against Unite is the largest push back I've ever seen in the history of this fanbase. It doesn't even hold a candle to the shitstorm Dexit caused, because there were an even number of people on both sides. Almost the ENTIRE fanbase, [including many Chinese fans, who were most likely the target demographic, due to the partnership with Tencent,] came out in droves and screamed; "FUCK this game, and FUCK Tencent." Either because people were underwhelmed by the idea of the big announcement being a poorly optimized mobile title (that frame rate in some clips... Yikes.), or because it was made by everybody's favorite monopolistic totalitarian strongarm company Tencent. This was the loudest that the fanbase has ever been when railing against a mobile title in the history of the series. If this game underperforms, it may scare TPC from investing in any more cheap mobile games.

    3. The contrast of the overwhelming praise that other decisions TPC has made over the past few months compared to the reaction to today's reveal

This year is good for spinoffs, and quite possibly the best in a very long time. We got a remake of Mystery Dungeon which was exciting, showing us that there's still an interest to continue developing Mystery Dungeon titles for the Pokemon franchise, plus, we also got a revival of Pokemon Snap, which has been demanded for literally decades, now. These spin off titles on the Switch are what many people in the fanbase, including casuals, want more than anything. The difference in reaction is like night and day. I think this past year has been excellent when it comes to fans voicing their frustrations and concerns. It's loud and obvious.

Similarly, the DLC has been equally praised for going all in when it comes to making a seamless, open area that's fun to explore and run around in. Hiroyuki Tani, the director of these DLCs has shown a ton of promise when it comes to implementing progressive game design into this long and historied franchise, and the fans have been eating it up. Personally, the Isle of Armor is the most fun I've had playing Pokemon since Black and White 2 way back in 2012. I hope he gets the chance to direct Generation 9's titles, and goes even further with the idea of exploring a vast world, because that would go perfectly with Pokemon's original purpose. Ohmori and Masuda's style of keeping the games linear is losing steam with fans, and it's becoming increasingly obvious that their philosophy around keeping players from "getting lost" is outdated. The fact that both Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra are isolated open areas that are focused specifically around exploring and discovery suggests that not only is GameFreak experimenting further with these ideas, but they also have a chance to hear from players about how this is what the future of the franchise is.

They know what satisfies us and makes us happy; strong entries into the main line games that offer freedom, exploration, and depth. We like spinoffs that are both old classics (Snap, Ranger, Mystery Dungeon), and newer ideas that take the franchise in different directions, and take risks (Pokken Tournament, Detective Pikachu). They also know what pisses us off; half-assed games that feel incomplete and bare bones compared to other titles on the same console, and mobile games because they don't have enough depth.

    Conclusion

So, I believe that this has the potential of BECOMING something really good for the series. This past year has been a big test for all of us, and we as a community have been made very happy and very angry in quick succession numerous times. It's been a roller coaster, but one thing is for sure; WE HAVE BEEN LOUD.

GameFreak, Nintendo, and TPC have no excuse now. Our anger has reached #1 trending on social media numerous times. It has attracted the attention of large gaming journalist outlets covering these controversies. They HAVE heard us, and they know what will happen if they continue to do nothing but disappoint. They pose a very real danger of losing money if they aren't careful, and we have no intention to stay quiet about it. We love this franchise, we love this world, and we love its potential.

They aren't stupid. I'm sure they are aware that they could lose a lot of money if they don't get their act together.

Keep voicing your opinions. They hear us, hopefully they will listen.

Pokemon smile is actually pretty helpful.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:15 AM PDT

I'm an older teenager, and I have ADHD with pokemon being one of my major hyperfixations. I also have a tendency to forget to brush my teeth and if I do remember my executive dysfuction makes it difficult to go and do it. I downloaded the app last night, it was so cute and my teeth have never felt so clean. It's a little finicky camera wise, and it's a bit difficult to catch pokemon, but honestly that doesn't matter to me as much since my teeth are getting cleaned. I know it's aimed at small kids who are learning to brush their teeth but it's helpful for me to remember to brush my teeth.

    Also free serotonin.

Nobody has ever made me feel so stupid for still liking Pokemon the way the Pokemon Company does...

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:25 PM PDT

I'm 31 years old, I'm married, I've got a 2 year old daughter, I've got a mortgage and I'm starting to plan for retirement. Even still, I never thought that age mattered when it came to liking anything. I was in 3rd grade when Pokemon came to America (or at least that's my earliest memory) and I've loved it ever since. I've supported every main series game and most of the spin-offs. I was a manager at GameStop for a few painful years and I was always so happy to see people of all ages come in and celebrate Pokemon. But after today, I just feel like I'm never again going to be the target customer for Pokémon, and it's probably time I move on.

Now, I didn't really like Sw/Sh, and even though I liked Let's Go P/E way more than I thought I would, I still don't think they needed to exist. But I cherished Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. Last week we got an announcement of Smile, Cafe, and a new Pokemon Snap. The first couple meant nothing to me, but that's okay, and Snap was pretty exciting (because finally they are making it), but when they said that today there would be a separate announcement for their next project I thought that this was finally D/P/Pl remakes. That's my own fault for assuming that.

However, when I saw that they were releasing a Pokemon moba (made by tencent nonetheless) I not only felt disappointment, I felt forgotten. The Pokemon company does not care about my opinion, and I know they never have, but it felt like they were at least still committed mostly to the main games, which is what I cared about most. Now I know they don't care about the main series games.

They'll still make them, of course, but it will never be the same. And why should it? Think about this; they can spend all this money making a new main series game and sell 20 million copies, but that still isn't where they make most of their money. All of the micro transactions across all of the mobile games, selling the trading cards, selling merchandise, advertising from their shows, that all makes more money than a singular purchase of one $60 game. And all of those other products require far less effort than the main series games to create. So why will that ever be the focus again? They don't need to revolutionize the format, they just need to do the bare minimum to keep their loyal fan base spending their money across the digital cornucopia they offer, which is to just release a low effort main title every 3+ years.

Today showed me that it's probably not going to get better, and I'm not the target audience anymore. For the first time I feel too old for Pokémon...

I know a lot of people like to poke fun at it, but I'm glad Pokemon Smile came out

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:30 AM PDT

I'm 25. I have no kids, nor any young family I help raise. I use it for me.

You see, I'm ADHD, bipolar 2, and autistic. I'll get attacked by executive dysfunction and depression frequently, which makes doing even simple hygiene hard sometimes. I'll shower regularly {just not daily}. I use deodorant and wear clean clothes {it became part of my schedule when I was young} but brushing teeth has always been hard. I usually would only do it in the shower.

Then this app came out. You see, I mentioned earlier that I'm autistic. Well, Pokemon's my special interest, so when I saw the ad for Pokemon Smile I got excited. Finally, after years, something to make brushing my teeth enjoyable! In the about week it's been out I've only missed one day of brushing. It's been a life saver, and my teeth haven't felt this clean in a while.

All because a constant source of serotonin got attached to the otherwise too boring task.

Burned Tower Background I made :D

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:51 AM PDT

The Pokemon Company and Game Freak need to agree upon a hard NO for yearly releases, as well as find better ways to bring both casual fans and more experienced fans back together.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:34 AM PDT

I think most of us can agree that the yearly releases are hurting the quality of the main series games, especially at the beginning of a new generation, so I won't talk about that. In 2013 (XY) and 2014 (ORAS) we had unjustifiably easy games, which was followed with fan backlash. This led to them (from what I understand) focussing upon games meant for a more casual audience, especially following Pokemon Go, and games for more experienced fans.

The 2016 (SuMo) and 2017 (USUM) games were not overly easy but had very few memorable moments that would stick with you and also held your hands to the point of obsession throughout the storyline. 2018 (LGPE) followed this even further and directly highlighted the keen willingness of TPC and GF to target a casual audience.

We all assumed that 2019's games (SwSh) would be different, and that we would face challenges that we hadn't faced for years. With the compulsory exp share and oversaturation of the Wild Area (like XY) the games became incredibly easy unless we set self-imposed challenges. [My first run i played with only Galarian Pokemon, my second only with Dark Types]. There was also the Dexit controversy, with many fan favourites being deleted from the games files, rather than being allowed to transfer them in Post-Game or trade them across.

Now that we are in 2020 I don't think I have ever seen the fandom so divided. There are those who would defend Game Freak and not allow any criticism at all. There are those who will criticise on every single one of a developer's social media posts. Then there are those like myself; who recognise the need for the franchise to evolve but disapprove with the direction it is currently taking.

Why divide fans into two seperate franchises? Why not give people the choice of using a single pokemon exp share, a whole party exp share, or none at all? Why not give us the option to make the game harder or easier through easily toggled difficulty options? Why not let us choose if we want ten pokemon on each route or four to make it more difficult?

It's about choice. I believe that we should each be given the option to play the game as we choose. At the moment it feels like we choose our teams and that's it. It's an RPG. I believe we should be able to forge our own adventure in the wonderful world of Pokemon. What do you think?

I'm really disappointed with TPC and Tencent

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:45 AM PDT

As a Chinese, as a game player, as a pokemon fan, and as a programming developer, I really hate Tencent.

People may know the disgusting things they have done before, but the reality is more serious than you thought.

Plagiarism: If a new game came out in China, they will connect the developer at first and try to use money to purchase the entire group. If the developer didn't want to sell their game, Tencent will plagiarize their game and make a new one. It is difficult for small group to use law to disclose Tencent's action. If that group accept the purchase from Tencent, that game will become a 'money is the strongest' one. Many wonderful Chinese games have been killed by such steps, and many wonderful games from US/EU or JP cannot have their Chinese market because Tencent has made a similar one already.

Involution: The staff in Tencent were also suffered a bad time. You might ask: is there any good guy in that company? My answer is yes, and there are so many good game makers in Tencent. However, even though one has dream of making a good game, he or she cannot do that in Tencent, because this company only cares about money. What's more important, in order to get more money, Tencent usually build up at least two different groups to make one type of game. They will let those two groups compete each other and finally remain the better one - not the one that making wonderful game, but the one who got more money. The loser will be dismissed in the end.

Agency Issue: For a long time, Nintendo has no local agency in China. As a Chinese player, we all hope we could have our own agency and play the game with Chinese language, rather than read Japanese or English. Last year Tencent announced they become Nintendo's official Chinese agency. We were happy at first - finally we got our own agency, but we are angry after that. Tencent took no effort to introduce more games on Chinese Nintendo Switch. From now, there were only four (maybe five) official Chinese ns game. We finally realized that Tencent was not aiming to get money by selling Nintendo games, they only care about IP, because IP could make much more money than one single game. The Pokemon Unite proved this point.

Go back to Pokemon Unite. This is not a Pokemon game, this is only a 'game with pokemon'. It only changed the skin of 王者荣耀 (a Tencent lol like mobile game), and copy the idea from StromHeros. I'm really disappointed with TPC. For western players, I don't know whether you would like Unite or not. There was a vote on Weibo (the Chinese Twitter) yesterday, the title was 'what's your idea about Unite'. There were 2417 of 'looking forward to', 2266 of 'just stay and take a look', 3172 of 'I don't really care', and 7251 of 'Tencent go away please'. Maybe Japanese players would like such kind of game (I hope not).

As a Chinese player, honestly, I can do nothing to change this situation. All I could do is telling my friends do not purchase any Tencent products. But, as you know, Tencent might be the biggest 'game company' around the world. Yes I'm using the word 'game company' to call them. They haven't made any good games before, but they let us know money can do anything.

I played Pokemon since the first generation, Yellow is my first pokemon game. I played all main series games, all dungeon series (except this year's remake), all Ranger series. I loved Pokemon since I was a child. It has gone through my entire life.

Maybe it's time for me to leave it now.

I hope all the game makers could have a better life in the future. I wish they could earn more money and enjoy their life. But I wish they could never forget: Game brings us happiness, and that's why people play it. The players were not impassible ATMs.

Instead of remakes why not just new games set in past regions.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:33 AM PDT

I would totally be down for a trip back to Kanto or Johto again if it wasn't another rehash of the previous games. Wouldn't it be cool to visit these regions with a different story? They could pull a BW 2 and set it years later update the region, new gym leaders or even new gyms in different cities and elite four. Maybe even finally make a game where you're not a kid starting his journey. Know what I would love to see? A game where taking on the gyms and league is treated like an optional side quest to whatever the main story is. Also would be cool to see variants of newer pokemon into past regions so instead of an Alolan Marowak you get something like a kantonian Hawlucha or whatever, can say it's due to travelers bring in species from other regions and adapting or something.

Is Pikachu really your favorite Pokémon?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:54 AM PDT

I get it he's a mascot. He's recognizable. But what/when is your favorite Pokémon? Game Freak loves Pikachu, Charizard, and Gen 1. I started with Gold and soon got Emerald. The I got Leaf Green. My favorite since then has been Sableye. In fact my top ten favorites are from later generations. Shaymin, Cherrim, Appletun, Alcremie, Virizion, Tapu Fini, Goomy, Meloetta, Mincinno. I do like Vaporeon because it was my starter in Gale of Darkness, but he's in the top twenty. So what are your favorites? You can comment them and even the generation with the most Pokémon.

The exclusion of HMs and HM required navigation is one of the beat developments over the last two generations.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:12 AM PDT

As the title says. Sword/Shield, Let's Go E/P, Sun/Moon, and Ultra S/Ultra M all removed the HMs from the series that had been present since generation one.

I was coming into Ballonlea in Shield and had the strong impulse to stop and make sure I healed up at the Center. Previous titles, if you get your ass handed to you, you're dumped back at the previous Center you stopped in at, meaning I'd you were without something capable of using Fly, you had to retract back. Maybe it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but it is a lesson deeply instilled into me by AA batteries, 20 years ago to make sure my time was spent wisely, before that red light started getting dim.

Sorry for rambling. But I think it is a positive step forwards. Thanks for reading.

It’s reasonable to be upset with Pokemon Unite, right?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 10:51 AM PDT

I am very glad that there is no new mainline game releasing this year. More time for Pokemon is always better. But if they're going to tease a "big project", why would we expect a copy and paste MOBA with Pokemon tacked on it. The game itself? Probably fine. But the way they hyped it up is what grinds my Klinks. I'm usually for the "be grateful for what you're getting", especially with Smash, as it seems as though a lot of work is put into each fighter. But this game looks like it had no work out into it. And Tencent of all companies? Really TPC? You stooped to a new low. If New Pokemon Snap and Pokémon Unite switched places, I wouldn't be mad, but the fact that they hyped it up to be this huge project is what pisses me off. I don't feel as though it was stupid to get our hopes up, as that's what they basically told us to do. But people are acting as though we're stupid for expecting anything big. I feel as though it's reasonable to be upset.

Welcome to the family ditto. You have a grand purpose and divine destiny set before you. Together, we can be an unstoppable force and train the most fearsome team the world has ever seen.

It begins here friend, the daycare. It was the last day Ditto ever saw me. With a wave farewell and destiny knot in hand, he faded into the dark corner of the facility. The rest of his existence he would be used as a slave and forced to mate with whoever...whatever walked through the door. Again and again he would witness his own children being discarded like rags until one, Herrenmenschen, was found worthy by his master.

My nephew came up with a great challenge yesterday that I found surprisingly fun. We had to list a move that started with every letter of the alphabet.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:59 AM PDT

It's hilarious the letters you'll get stuck on. For us it was J. J was insanity inducing. We were sure there had to be a move that started with "Juice-something" so then we just found ourselves laughing saying "Juice" over and over again trying to think. And Y messed us up for so long too. It can't be names of Pokemon, only names of moves. It sounds easy but when you're there, with no list in front if you, it just makes you feel so silly. No google of course! Have fun!

I loved shield, I'm enjoying isle so far, I'm excited for crown, I think unite will be fun, and I'm pretty tired of only reading the vocal minority complain about this stuff. I am so sick of ppl saying "nobody wanted this" and "Game Freak doesn't care about the fans" and so on. There are millions upon millions of fans who clearly enjoy Pokémon. People are allowed to have their opinions obviously, so this isn't a hate post even if it might seem like it. I would just like to go to a place where there are some more positive topics.

Sure you can look at it but being able to polish them was something I looked forward to as a kid. Just wanted to share this in the midst of all the chaos lol
