Before the first gym, Hop stops you at least 17 times for an unskippable cutscene

I would know, I just played through Sword and took a screenshot every time I saw him off in the distance menacingly waiting for me.

Let me adventure and explore! It isn't fun to be stopped all the damn time. I thought Alola was bad with Hau and Lillie stopping you every 13 feet but Hop (Galarian Hau) just drives me crazy.

Can we all agree that GameFreak, as a developer, excels in disappointing the fans more than wow-ing them?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2020 08:39 PM PDT

I'm a long time Pokemon fan, but I tell you what, dealing with modern Pokemon is a bit like an abusive relationship (I mean that more in jest, in no way am I demeaning actual abuse). We want Pokemon as Pokemon fans. We love the core gameplay loop and the franchise. We get excited to see the little things. Overall, it feels like modern Pokemon from GameFreak is usually involved in controversy or fan disappointment more often than not these days.

Case #1: GameFreak loves to remove fan-favorite features for (seemingly) no good reason

Take trainer customization, for instance. It was a huge hit in XY, and absent from ORAS. GF's explanation of this was twofold - one, ORAS was a remake and there was no customization in RSE, so there would not be in the remakes either (although Battle Frontier was in the original and NOT the remakes but whatever). The second excuse was that customization was special to XY because it fit their theme of France (https://nintendoeverything.com/no-trainer-customization-in-pokemon-omega-rubyalpha-sapphire-game-freak-keen-on-keeping-random-encounters/) The fan disappointment on the removal of the feature is likely why it returned for Sun/Moon.

Case #2: The games do get easier and smaller over the generations

A lot of us aren't kids anymore, but it isn't hard to go back and play the older games and then the modern ones and see the discrepancies in difficulty here. Masuda has made it clear he believes kids won't spend time on long or challenging games, and that smartphones are the main competition to Pokemon (not other video games), hence why the overall gameplay has simplified. In a lot of ways this has brought a lot of QoL issues for getting into competitive (IV checkers, full EV training with vitamins, Mints, etc), but it's killed the story and general things to do in the games that aren't self imposed. (https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018-10-12-junichi-masuda-on-pokemon-lets-gos-difficulty-meltans-reveal-and-the-future)

Case #3: The dex cut and the DLC addition

It doesn't matter what your opinion is with the dex cut, the fact is it happened - the developers stopped a previously prominent and beloved yet taken-for-granted feature for whatever the reasons might be. This has been argued to death, I won't argue it here.

Case #4: SwSh has some really janky graphical issues and poor optimization

You can like or dislike the art style, but I think the difference between the Wild Area in the base game and the IoA speaks for itself. The Wild Area in SwSh was simply unfinished. It lacks polish. The YComm is even more broken today post DLC than it was. The game continues to lag and stutter to immense degrees.

Case #5: Even the reps have no idea what is going on

The oft-repeated "SwSh has 18 gyms!" fiasco, the inaccurate level scaling explanation to IGN recently, the Nintendo/GF reps who deal with the public and journalists are woefully wrong about game features frequently. Do the developers just not explain anything to their reps before an interview? Or do the developers not see fit to put someone who actually knows information about the game in the interview chair?

Case #6: For better or for worse, Pokemon makes enough money that they should have the resources to iron out these problems

"The franchise makes the money, not the games."

If GameFreak only earned $1 of profit per game sold they would earn 8-15 million a year. GameFreak are also partial owners of TPC, so it's not like they don't benefit overall from the entire franchise sales. In comparison, Horizon Zero Dawn sold 10 million copies in two years. Pokemon beats it in sheer numbers - especially because they have churned out games nearly annually. Now, I say this not to do a 1 to 1 comparison, but to prove that plenty of games make less money than the Pokemon franchise and massively outdo GameFreak on the basics - models not clipping through the wall and online features that actually work, for instance.

I bring this up because I totally believe Pokemon can, and should, do better. I'm not an "ungrateful fan" (seriously, that's such a dumb argument, it's not like GF is making Pokemon games as an altruistic favor to us, they're doing it to make money from us). I want to see the games improve. I want to stop feeling disappointed in my favorite game series. Don't you?

EDIT: This really blew up! I just want to say I didn't make this post to hate on GameFreak or anyone who likes SwSh. I personally have enjoyed SwSh, but it's just so clear to me that Pokemon could be so much more. Thank you, everyone, for the discussion.

Opinion: Zeraora event should be standard for mythical distribuition

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 08:11 AM PDT

Anyone else think that the way they're doing this shiny Zeraora event is really well done? It's way better than going to your local GameStop and punching in a code. This way requires some effort. Not only do you need to work together with the community, but you have to be smart about the way you go about it. There are tons of strategies people are using to go about this, and I think it's fantastic. There are some lower star raids for those without online, and 5 star raids for those seeking a real challenge. Even the shinies appearing in the high levels build hype, and give an even greater challenge, with rewards to match.

If only the Y-comm was fixed though...

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 07:46 AM PDT

When Pokémon Sun and Moon came out, I wanted to get Pokémon Moon so I can get a Popplio. It's a performer Pokémon and I'm a theatre kid, so it makes sense. I was scared to tell my parents that I like Pokémon at the time because of some superstitions.

Flash forward a few years later and my boyfriend let me have his copy of Pokémon Shield since he knew how badly I wanted to play Pokémon. I chose Sobble and she became my partner Pokémon (she's now a Level 100 Gigantamax Inteleon named Echo). When the DLC came out (which I preordered), I decided to help the guy find his Digletts. After returning a certain amount, I got a Popplio. I decided to camp with it and Echo decided to adopt it.

The Popplio, now a Brionne, has been given a lovely family.

Update: the Brionne is now a Primarina right after playing with their adoptive siblings (Drizzile Twins and a Sobble)

Pokemons big problem is that it's annualized

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 07:20 AM PDT

The gaming community loves to rag on annualized games like Assassin's Creed, COD, Fifa, etc. but I usually don't see Pokemon, despite the fact it suffers just as much, or even more.

Pokemons annualization has led to pretty much every problem I have with the series: The Dex Cut, The underwhelming 3D graphics (please God I wish we went back to sprites), the lack of a postgame, no safari zone (don't see enough people complain about this one), the ho-hum new gimmicks, everything. I get that the games are just one facet, and an increasingly unimportant facet of TPC, but that doesn't mean I can't ask for better, especially with the sales Pokemon still gets.

I think more development time is pretty self explanatory on why it would alleviate most of those issues, but another thing is that I feel like we barely get to enjoy a generation anymore. A typical generation included the first two new region games, an improved sister version, and a remake. Now, because it seems like the separate version is going the way of the dodo, and I were reaching games like DPPt and BW that I think cannot be topped with GFs new approach to development, why not some more experimental stuff?

People have been asking for more experimental Pokemon games for a while, haven't we all dreamed of being a part of the evil team? For a while spinoffs have filled that experimental void a bit, except the fact that we barely get any new spinoffs franchises anymore, and most of the ones we had have been left to die (I miss you Pokemon Conquest). I don't think we've had a new spinoff series (That was actually worth something) in a long time, unless you want to count Pokemon Go from 4 years ago, and it's a shame. People typically forget the spinoffs but I think it's a real shame that GFs new schedule with this franchise seems to be: Release the new region, release the remakes, and pepper in a couple lukewarm spinoff sequels and remakes throughout, THATS IT.

The worst part is I don't see them going back, how could they? GF is a business and they get to release mediocre games every year for a fortune, it's a no brainier to keep going.

Nintendo/The Pokemon Company should just let Bandai Namco develop the main Pokemon games from now on.

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 04:51 AM PDT

Seriously, between Pokken Tournament and New Pokemon Snap (which is being developed by Bandai Namco now), plus all the other higher quality games they're capable of, Nintendo/The Pokemon Company should just cut GameFreak loose and let them develop the games from here on out. At least then we'd have decent online functionality, better graphics and less bugs. This will likely result in more DLC shenanigans and potentially micro-transaction bullcrap, but let's not pretend Game Freak/The Pokemon Company weren't already going down that route.

A moment to appreciate Johto/Sinnoh and their rewarding exploration factor.

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 08:42 AM PDT

I know many people love Hoenn. Especially when GBA was one of the most nostalgic Era of Pokémon. And there's no problem with that, this Era had good games.

But I don't particularly consider Hoenn games the best... The region has no bad features, but weak compared to its predecessor (Johto).

Pokémon isn't exactly the most exemplary of all JRPGs, and most of its regions are linear and with little incentive for exploration. Hoenn and other regions only give you an item if you decide to explore an optional cave fork (If that fork exists in the first place).

But Johto and Sinnoh are a little more impressive than that. In fact, I really praise Johto's exploration factor. Most caves have optional forks that encourage you to be curious about what have there. Encouraging you to go back there later and exploring further. And if you do that, you're rewarded with great, unexpected things like Lapras, a secret grass where you can only find Natu and Smeargle there, and the rest of the Unown puzzles. It's different from most regions where you would probably only find a TM or another item.

HeartGold/SoulSilver has all the right things that its original versions did for exploration, but with so much more now. Not only it have a Battle Frontier (which it also has on Emerald) but it has an unbelievably large amount of extras to do post-game. This makes me consider HG/SS possibly the best and most complete Pokémon game.

My second favorite region is Sinnoh precisely because it has the second best exploration of the franchise. It's not like Johto, but it's worthy of praise. In-game events like Rotom are well designed and I would like to see more of this. Of course, some are unnecessarily difficult like Spiritomb, but still I praise the intention. But of course, even Platinum doesn't have the same amount of extras compared to HG/SS or B2/W2. That's why my biggest dream would be Morimoto directing the D/P remake, but unfortunately it's unlikely to happen.

Unova and Hoenn are pretty fun, but pretty linear (Especially Unova) and there's hardly anything interesting to explore the caves. Probably only the legendary Pokemons. I think the only highlight of Hoenn's exploration was actually the quest to open the Regis locations, as it requires two specific Pokémon, braille knowledge and the location is well hidden. There's also the Bagons area, but I missed more interactivity in the overworld such as Lapras, Unown puzzles and even Rotom TV.

That's why I wish Pokémon had more Johto-like or at least Sinnoh-like regions. The Union Cave design is probably the coolest cave in the whole franchise exploration-wise. It's simple, but it's more complex and rewarding than anything you see in others regions even nowdays. But of course, I also consider Mt. Coronet one of the most magical and mysterious places in the Pokémon World, but could be more secrets inside it (Although the Arceus event compensates very well this. Too bad it's never officially distributed).

How is the Y-Comm STILL this bad?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2020 12:40 PM PDT

I remember when Sword/Shield first came out the Y-comm was frustrating to use. I figured "Hey, it just came out, I'm sure they'll patch it up soon." So that was a stupid thought to have apparently. From what I hear, the Isle of Armor DLC has made it even WORSE. I'm starting to have the "I'm sure they'll patch it" thoughts again, but I'm seriously having doubts about that.

This is the most frustration I can ever recall having in a video game, simply because it's really out of my control. If I die in something like Dark Souls, that's my fault because I didn't play more carefully. All I can do with the Y-comm is to try to keep it searching for a trade, and even then it still produces garbage results. Still takes too long to refresh (and can't refresh whenever I want), still gives me raids that have already been completed, Still puts me in 5 star rare raids that nobody else joins, and my friends can't even see when I've joined a raid so that they can fill a spot.

If online was to ever be at it's best in a Pokemon game, this was seriously the time to do it. I'm honestly astonished that rather than improving, the online has only gotten worse. If they could fix this one system I'd be able to enjoy the game so much more

I have absolutely no hope for it to happen but

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 02:20 AM PDT

Imagine if game freak went the sonic mania way and hired a team of fans to make a main series Pokemon game

Just a game made by fans would be so good and we'll probably bring back beloved features with new interesting ones

I know a main argument against modern Pokemon is that the games are designed for kids but i honestly believe that a game can be both designed for kids and still fun and full of content and complexity i mean just look at games like mario odyssey

I really don't think it will happen at this point but a man can dream

Idea for future games: 2D world similar to Octopath Traveler w/ 3D high quality graphics for battles

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 09:27 AM PDT

Seeing as Gamefreak doesn't have the resources to include all pokemon or make a higher quality overworld, what if they instead made an overworld that harkens back to pre generation 6 & make it 2D, similar to that of Octopath Traveler? Like make the 2D pretty and dynamic like Octopath, & then use higher detail 3D graphics for battles & cutscenes that look like the trailer for New Pokemon Snap. I think this would work so much better. I have more fond memories of exploring generations 1-5 than exploring generations 7 & 8 (Gen 6 was kinda in the middle for me). They could make a much bigger world, bring back previous generations, & then when you go into a battle suddenly you get this whole new perspective of the area, 2D gyms become giant crowded stadiums, & the pokemon are beautiful. Just a thought.

Theory: Yamper is a domesticated Electrike

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 10:00 AM PDT

I, as well as many others, were confused at the fact that Electrike was included in Sword and Shield, when Yamper, another electric dog Pokémon, was introduced in the game. And that was not the only similarity

    • They both evolve once, into Manectric and Boltund, by level up and within 1 level of each other (26 for Electrike, 25 for Yamper)

    • They both produce electricity by running

    • They are both in the field egg group (although this is to be expected)

    • Boltund and Manectric both use the electricity that they produce to stimulate their muscles when they run

Not only that, but they could also both be found in Route 4, where they would presumably fill the same ecological niche. Outside of the wild area, The only other place Yamper can be found is Route 2. These routes are outside Turffield and Wedgehurst. Turffield is a town noted for its farming, and various fields surround Wedgehurst. It would make sense that Yamper, which is noted for its herding abilities, would be found in towns that are known for their farming. Outside of Route 4, they only other place that Electrike can be found is the Wild Area. Although Yamper can be found in the Wild Area as well, it can only be found surrounding Motostoke (i.e. human civilisation) while Electrike tend to avoid those areas. Yamper is also only half the height of Electrike, but is 88% of the weight. Domestic animals tend to be smaller than their wild counterparts, especially dogs, and tend to be more, shall we say, well fed. Yamper's temperament also appears to be significantly more tame while Electrike's seems to be more aggressive.

In conclusion, Yamper and Electrike are both conceptually and biologically similar, but differ in the ways that domestic animals tend to differ from wild ones.

Zeraora made me realize Max Raid Pokemon can use more than four moves

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 07:43 AM PDT

In a battle I just did, I counted:

    1. Blaze Kick
    2. Hone Claws
    3. Plasma Fists
    4. Close Combat
    5. Outrage
    6. Thunder Punch

I guess I just never noticed before, and I probably wouldn't have if I didn't keep losing to Zeraora and starting over. My wife tells me it also packs Discharge, meaning it may use up to seven moves in one battle. Kinda explains the feeling of winning by luck rather than skill in most Raids. Zeraora could use four moves and never use an Electric move, or use four moves and never do anything but Electric-type damage. Cross your fingers, I guess.

Need help with zeraora? Use lightning rod alolan marowak

It is immune to zeraora s electric and fighting moves, and it can get access to ground moves as a cubone, through level up or a heart scale. Also alolan marowak is a very decent Pokémon in general, even though it has a base 80 attack, but it's immunities make up for it.
