[Rebuild Tuesday] SwSh Meta Predictions: Galarian Articuno!

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 09:00 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

Welcome to this week's edition of Rebuild Tuesday, a weekly event we're doing along with our Discord!

Just as with last week, we're trying something a bit different from usual; instead of asking you to rebuild an existing Pokémon, we're asking you to speculate on what the movesets for an upcoming Pokémon might look like and where you think it'd end up in the meta if it does have those moves!

This week's Pokemon is Galarian Articuno!

#144 Galarian Articuno (Japanese フリーザー Freezer)

    Cruel Pokémon

    Introduction:

Galarian Articuno is Psychic/Flying. Its ability is Competitive, which increases its special attack by two stages if the opponent lowers one of its stats. It has a signature Psychic-type move called Freezing Glare, which deals damage and has a chance to freeze the target. Contrary to Galarian Zapdos, Galarian Articuno seems to be built on special offense. There is a chance it will retain most or all of its Ice-type coverage due to Freezing Glare's nature, making its movepool somewhat better. As long as its base stats are good and it gains beneficial moves, Galarian Articuno will become a brutal force in the OU meta.

What do you trainers think will become of Galarian Articuno in the meta? What sets will be most used? Which Smogon tier will it be placed in?

    Galarian Articuno on - Pokemon.com

In addition to discussing how you feel this Pokémon will be in the new meta, feel free to discuss your likes and dislikes about it, be they from your playthroughs of the main series or side games, your success or failure with this Pokémon competitively, any cool fan artwork (with the source) featuring this Pokémon that you'd like to share, or anything else!

For those who want to see previous Pokémon covered, you can view a list of our Gen 7 rebuilds here and our current SwSh series here.

We'd also suggest checking out our Discord each Tuesday for live discussion on these topics as well!

If there are any new Sword/Shield Pokémon (or returning Pokémon with significant changes from previous gens) that you'd like to see featured in future weeks, let us know by sending me a PM with your suggestion!

This thread is part of /r/pokemon's regular sticky rotation. To see our rotation schedule and all past sticky rotation threads, go here!

Are "Regular" three-stage evolution families becoming endangered?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 04:25 AM PDT

Granted, this is less of a problem in Gen 8 than in Gens 6 and 7, but still something I feel used to be done better in past generations, and should be done better in the future.

I'm a sucker for Pokémon that evolve twice. A cute little creature you catch in the early-game, which eventually evolves into a slightly more competent battler, and then when it starts falling behind the curve it evolves again, into something you can easily take to the Pokémon League. Sort of like your starter, without being your starter. You know the type: Oddish, Aron, Hoppip, Geodude, Gastly, Sandile, Shinx, and so on.

However, it seems like there are fewer of these three-stage evolutions in recent games than there used to be. I mean, the starters still have three evolution stages, and there's the mandatory bird you find early on, and the mandatory early bug, and of course the pseudo-legendary of the region. All are three-stage families, by convention.

But these Pokémon sometimes feel like they're designed by checklist, or at least within a very rigid design framework. Starters gotta have starter typings, early birds and early bugs do their things, and it seems inevitable that the pseudo-legendary has to be a Dragon-type. There's little room for innovation here. The boxes are ticked, design parameters are fulfilled, and for all that I actually don't dislike them. The bugs and birds and pseudos look as good as ever. But... shouldn't there be more three-stage lines? What about the likes of, say, Abra, Spheal, Slakoth, Mareep, Bellsprout, Machop and the others that evolve twice, but aren't in any of the aforementioned categories?

A quick count of these "non-conventional" three-stage evolutionary families suggests there were 9 of those in Gen I. Gen II had only two (Mareep and Hoppip), but cross-generation evolutions also made three-stage lines out of the Pikachu, Zubat, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, and Horsea lines, while adding an optional third evolution to the Oddish and Poliwag lines. Gen III was more self-contained, but it had 8 "non-conventional" three-stage families. Like Gen II, Gen IV had few such families in itself (Shinx, that's it), but added third members to so many families that were previously two-stage it's hard to even count them all. I think there are 10, plus Gallade. Gen V had 13-15 such families, depending on how you count Venipede and Sewaddle. So if my math is correct, among the first 649 Pokémon, there were close to 50 of these "non-conventional" three-stage lines.

And then came the dark days. Gen VI had only Honedge and Flabébé's families, Gen VII had only the Bounsweet family unless you count Cosmog. All the rest of their respective Pokédexes consisted of single-stage or two-stage families, aside from starters and the "conventional" three-stage lines.

Gen VIII fares just a bit better, with three three-stage families aside from the usual suspects: Rolycoly, Hatenna, and Impidimp. In addition, there's Mr. Rime and Obstagoon adding a third stage to their evolutionary families.

Granted, the recent generations have introduced much fewer Pokémon than previous ones. But still, I feel like the regional Pokédexes these days have fewer three-stage families than they used to, even relative to the total number of Pokémon. Since the end of Gen V, about 250 new Pokémon have been created, but only 10 non-conventional three-stage lines. The lack of cross-generation evolutions also means that the abundant one- and two-stage families these days stay that way forever - barring the existence of regional forms, of course.

I think this is happening because Game Freak tries to ride two horses. On one hand, they realize that Pokédex bloat is a thing, and try to limit the number of new Pokémon introduced in each generation. On the other hand, they have a ton of new gimmick mechanics they want to try out, so they want to have the number of evolution families as high as possible. That means fewer Pokémon per evolution family, and a Pokédex populated by single- or two-stage evolution families that carry one gimmick each. Three-stage lines is a luxury they're barely affording themselves anymore. It's a bit of a shame, because I think the three-stage families are easily the most memorable ones out there, as well as the most fun to use in-game.

Then again, it has always been the case that most Pokémon evolve only once. Perhaps most players and the designers are fine with two-stage families being the default, with single- and three-stage lines being rare anomalies, like rare "treats" that shouldn't be overdone. I think it's sad, but do you mind?

A Gigantamax Indeedee concept I made

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 04:12 PM PDT

BTW with Isle of Armor you can lowkey become a Gym Leader.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 04:20 PM PDT

Once you beat Mustard in the Isle of Armor you unlock restrictive sparring, which is a 3 v 3 fight with a random challenger. The catch is that all 3 of your pokemon have to be the same type, so 3 steel types, 3 water types, 3 ground types, etc. For your first few battles the opponents have random pokemon, but as you progress the opponents start using pokemon strong against your type. So if you are a Steel type trainer, the opponents will begin to use Fighting, Ground, and Fire types. This replicates the gym leader experience, as they have to fight with 1 type while having tools to combat their weaknesses.

I know that many people aren't thrilled with the Isle of Armor, but I honestly love this mode. If I were to hazard a guess 95% of pokemon players have thought about what pokemon they would use in a gym, and now we have a way to do it! Ofc we have to fight in the dojo, but nevertheless it is a new and cool experience!

Who at GameFreak thought this was a good idea...

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 10:14 AM PDT

...to give Basculin, the Unova region's generic Water type that'll never stop bugging you when you Surf, a catch rate of fucking 25. The same goddamn catch rate as Relicanth. You know, that ancient fish based off of a Coelacanth, a rare species of fish that's somehow been around for literally hundreds of millions of years, and is a tool to acquire the Elemental Titans in R/S/E. Yup, a generic bass is as difficult to catch as Relicanth.

It's a fucking fish. A generic fish that I can find in 2 seconds. Why must it be so fucking hard to catch a basic fish in a Pokemon game?

Cram-O-Matic: Mass produce Gold Bottle Caps

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 11:31 PM PDT

Serebii posted how to use the Cram-o-matic, and I've been mass producing gold bottle cops with the following recipes:

    Bottle Cap:

    • Rare Candy
    • Rare Candy
    • Rare Candy
    • Quick Powder/ Armorite Ore/ Balm Mushroom/ Up-grade/ Wishing Piece/ Smoke Ball/ Destiny Knot/ Metal Coat/ Prism Scale

Gold Bottle Cap (MUST be in this exact order):

    • Bottle Cap
    • any item
    • Bottle Cap
    • Bottle Cap

Explanation: Cram-o-matic has a convoluted system that requires certain attributes and points to create certain items, with an attribute of each pokemon type and a rating from 1 to 150. Bottle caps can be made in any attribute with a score between 141 and 149. I've found the most efficient way to reach this is 3 Rare Candies (each worth 40 up to a maximum of 120) and an item with a value of 21 to 29. This fourth item can easily be Armorite Ore which is literally everywhere on the Isle of Armor.

    Edit: Other useful recipes:

Flame Orb (MUST be in this exact order):

    • Figy Berry
    • Dynamax Candy
    • Dynamax Candy
    • Dynamax Candy

Toxic Orb (MUST be in this exact order):

    • Qualot Berry
    • Dynamax Candy
    • Dynamax Candy
    • Dynamax Candy

Opinion: Gen 7 was a lot better than most give credit for.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 11:37 AM PDT

Note that this is an opinion and thoughts on everything can be subjective, so if you hate Gen 7, that's alright too.

Something I keep seeing with Gen 7 is that people complain about the cutscenes being all over the place, which ended up being a huge problem in Gen 8. And because of that, there's a lot of hate towards the games due to being worse if you try to replay it.

I think that just looking at the cutscene aspect alone disregards a lot of the important parts of the game, because yeah, it is a bit intrusive, but it actually holds a decent plot with some pretty brutal and dark tones and themes. Lusamine being an insane maniac with her "collection?" Her own children having to run away from her just to get away from it all? Lillie being dressed up to look like Nihilego, an ultra beast which Lusamine is obsessed with? The sudden realization when you reach Po Town that Team Skull isn't just a gang or anything, but people who wound up with nothing else and that they're not all that evil?

Compared to some other games, that's a huge increase in plot, and (in my opinion) it's a lot better than the issue with Gen 8 where there are more intrusions but a much worse plot. Gen 8 is hated and loved at the same time, with some having a blast with it and some despising it, but from all I've seen, a lot of the complaints towards Gen 8 are less there in Gen 7, and it doesn't look like many actually enjoyed Gen 7.

Gen 7 was far from perfect, but I feel like it was the most packed with stuff since Gen 5, complete with both megas and Z-Moves and some great Pokémon like Mimikyu and Palossand, and it even introduced Alolan Forms. The Battle Royale feature was always incredible fun, and I remember battling friends and it was some of the most fun in a Pokémon game since Gen 5. The Poké Pelago was always fun to me, and it feels like they crammed as much as they could with their release cycle into the games. They were flawed, but they were giant steps now that Game Freak had done the first gen with 3D beforehand. But the general consensus from what I've seen is that they are awful, just because of cutscenes, and I'm a bit saddened by that.

That's my opinion, but feel free to disagree! What are your thoughts on this all, or even just the gen in particular?

Golduck and it’s lack of dual type

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 04:55 AM PDT

Why oh why has it never been upgraded to Water/Psychic after all these years?

It just seems like a complete oversight to me to not have it become dual type when it evolves from Psyduck. Especially given the focus on psychic moves (both in the game and in the anime).

It makes no sense - other Pokemon types have changed as things progress.

While we are here, its incredibly underrated. I also think it is due an evolved form at some point.

What if Mega Evolutions were the main "gimmick" for the remakes?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 10:06 AM PDT

I feel that Mega Evolutions would fit perfectly in all the remakes going foward. They could introduce a new "gimmick" in the new game like Dynamax but the remake would have Mega Evolutions because it they can easily fit in the region without having some long ass explanation for why it's in the region. But if they decided that Mega Evolutions will never come back I hope that there would be new regional forms like Sinnonian Torkoal or Gogoat.

    Theory: Urshifu is from Sinnoh

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 12:57 PM PDT

Hello there to you people who are playing Pokémon Sword and Shield. I am Au-Plau-Se and today I am going to be discussing with you the Pokémon of the Isle of Armor. Please be warned there may be spoilers. You don't have to look at this post if you want to. Look at it at your own risk. Now that this is out of the way, let's take a dive in.

Going back to the trailer, there was a legendary Pokémon called Kubfu which evolved depending on the Tower you have to go to, into the powerful Urshifu but the form depends on which of the towers you go to. Anyways, the post is not here to talk about the description of Urshifu only, but it is to give a theory. To sum up from all of this, what if this Pokémon is from a region, specifically Sinnoh? There are some evidence to back this theory up. Let's take a look at the normal forms and the Gigantamax forms of Urshifu. From the design of the normal forms of Urshifu, such as the Single Strike Style and the Rapid Strike Style, both the patterns on their fur at the front bears a resemblance to one of the Creation Trio, specifically Dialga and Urshifu in both the two normal forms resembles Palkia for the five fingers not to mention Urshifu bearing crowns just like how Giratina has a crown like appearance on its' head. In the Gigantamax forms of Urshifu, these two forms are mostly white but for Single Strike Style, it has red as a secondary color, whereas the blue is the secondary color for Rapid Strike Style. The design for Urshifu's gigantamax forms bears a resemblance to the Nio and Kongorishiki Statues. The Gigantamax form for Rapid Style Strike has the ribbons on the head go around the body to form similar to the ribbon worn on the Nio Statue, whereas the Gigantamax form of Urshifu bears a resemblance to a Wrathful Guardian Deity with the red.>! Another thing to add up to point out the theory that Urshifu is from Sinnoh is that after you beat Mustard in any tower and evolve Kubfu, Hop will appear and Mustard will explain that it can Gigantamax but giving "Max Soup" is not delectable to Urshifu due to the "taste of Max Mushrooms" unless something is added to make the soup more appealing, which he mentions a "certain something" which Mustard forgets, however Hop says that the certain something would be Honey. Hop mentioned about reading a book regarding Urshifu saying that "it lives in the mountains in some far-off region" and that "it is mad for some sticky honey" which is the Max Honey which can be found from a Dynamaxed Vespiquen.!< In other words both Urshifu and Vespiquen are connected to each other due to the fact that Urshifu is based off of a bear, specifically the Asian Black Bear and Vespiquen is based off of the Japanese honey bee. And Ironically the Urshifu is based off of an Asian Black Bear which are usually found in either Honshu and Shikoku and Honshu is located at the South of Hokkaido which is what Sinnoh is based off of. That is basically it for my theory right here, if you have any questions please let me know down in the comments and I will see you guys later. Peace!

I lost my first In-game match in Pokemon Shield today

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 10:35 AM PDT

So I had never lost a battle in Pokemon Shield until today. I have used the same pokemon that I have had since the beginning of the game and they never lost. Today, I decided to do something different. I caught six brand new pokemon, Trained them up to level 80, and rematched Mustard with them. I didnt lose to Mustard before, because my og team is really good for in game battles, but I didnt have any experience with this team. Me and mustard were both down to our last pokemon, and in a sad turn of events, he beat my Urshifu with his Urshifu. I had lost my first battle. Lesson learned, either stick with my og team or practice with my second team before fighting Mustard.
