Gen 2 Has Many Hidden Gems That Should Be In Modern Pokemon Games Too Posted: 14 Jun 2020 08:54 PM PDT Gen 2 has problems with level balancing and pokemon distribution, but it also has memorable and fun qualities that could be implemented into modern pokemon games. Some things that amazed me as a kid and still as an adult: - Lapras appearing in the overworld on Fridays in the 'hidden' part of Union Cave - That random trainer in Union Cave who has a charmander, and that random trainer before Goldenrod who has a bulbasaur, both starters that aren't even acquirable in the game without transferring (DPPT did this too, sort of, but that was because you had to see every pokemon in the dex at one point) - Hidden parts to caves and routes, such as in Union Cave, Ruins of Alph, and the Dark Cave that connects THREE areas - Whirlpool. This seems like such a cool HM/TM that could be used for water puzzles or making routes seem more mystifying. Was really cool to have the different entrances to the Whirl Islands. - The guy in Mt. Mortar who gifts you a Tyrogue for making it through the rock smash areas and finding him - Going back to New Bark Town and surfing over to Tohjo falls and Kanto (I was excited in Sw/Sh that they included the lake near the starting town you could go back to and find feebass) - The whole plot/area involving the towers and their story, and seeing the legendary dogs in the overworld moving around and running away - Bug Catching Contest - Helping catch Farfetch'd - Slowpoke Well was short but cool, and also had a 'secret' area you could go back to later - Any routes that had multiple paths to take or somewhat hidden areas, like the route before the Ice Cave (I enjoyed Route 5 in Sw/Sh, and the route with the Scorched Slab in Hoenn, for this reason too) - Having a fork in the path in which you got to choose to go to Mohagany Town or Olivine - The Red Gyarados - Hatching shiny baby pokemon from the egg gifted at the Daycare - Finding Leftovers in the trash can in the restaurant in Celadon City (and finding items in neat places in general, like soft-sand on the beach) - Both legendaries in one game, but obtainable at completely different places at different times (I've only played Gold, which talks up the purpose of Ho-oh and its role with the Tower, specifically. So, I can't even fathom how Lugia fits into the story for Silver, or having to go to the Whirl Islands instead of the Tower, because in every game since all box legendaries are found in functionally the same location and are completely exchangeable for the plot - yes even in Hoenn iirc) There is probably so much more I can't think of at the moment, but it is so jam-packed full of cool details and small choices that made it so fun to play as a kid even with the limited roster. It was like every play through was a new experience and I LOVED testing myself on whether I remembered where a "secret" thing was, or getting excited about possibly hatching a shiny, or racing to get togetic, or catching that Gyarados. This isn't to say that subsequent games didn't also have some of these qualities, but I can't think of a game that has all or even most of these features in one, and I especially can't think of many of these in the more recent games. Thoughts? I'd love to hear of similar things from other games or even more from G/S/HG/SS! Edit to add: - The battle with Red - The cloning glitch (would be super abused now, but as a kid it was great to accidentally have two Feraligatrs) - Celebi - Typhlosion actually having fire :P [link] [comments] | ||
