One single, desperate wish for Gen IX (and beyond): Streamlining battles

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 04:26 AM PST

If I've understood the recent source code leaks correctly, the newer Pokémon games still run their battle mechanics on a code base made for Ruby and Sapphire - and it's beginning to become really noticeable and feel pretty archaic. I have nothing against the way battles are currently being fought and conducted, but I think they're desperately due for a bit of code cleanup as the amount of "stutter" - gameplay-wise, not graphical - is beginning to become a joke.

For instance, when my Scyther uses Swords Dance, the following happens after I click "Fight --> Swords Dance"

    • Text box pops up: "Scyther used Swords Dance!"
    • Swords Dance animation plays
    • Scyther returns to its idle pose
    • "Boost" animation plays
    • Text box pops up: "Scyther's Attack rose sharply!"
    • Time elapsed: 8 seconds, if I've timed it correctly. Then it's time for the next Pokémon on the field to make its move.

Wouldn't it be better to do all those at once? "Scyther used Swords Dance to sharply boost its Attack!" while the move animation and the boost animation play simultaneously?

When a Pokémon is hit by an attack that KOs it, we see the move animation, which chains into the "Pokémon takes a hit" animation that plays while the HP bar goes down. If the HP depletion takes longer than the "Pokémon takes a hit" animation, the Pokémon returns to its idle pose while the bar goes down. We then get the "It's Super Effective!" message if applicable, then the "the Pokémon fainted!" message, all while the Pokémon stands in its idle pose, then it's time to play the "Pokémon faints and is recalled" animation.

Or what about Sandstorm/Hail? Still buffeting one Pokémon at a time, complete with animations. And don't get me started on Leftovers.

As soon as you get multiple Pokémon on the field, you're getting a whole lot of waiting per second of command-giving. Raids are probably the worst example of this, where players take three seconds to input commands for a single turn of battle, and then have to wait for a minute while all the animations play out for that turn alone. A minute in which only one Pokémon at a time breaks its idle pose, I might add. What looked fine for a handheld game with static sprites in 2002 really doesn't hold up on a home console 18 years later.

It's not like the battle mechanics of Pokémon are bad, but the way things are displayed right now makes the battles pretty clunky. I really hope we'll get an overhaul to streamline the experience a bit in future generations.

This is one of the greatest days of my life.

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 05:52 PM PST

After six years of working a soul sucking job at a grocery store, I've finally decided to quit and have moved on to a better, more fitting job for myself. Back in July, a Pokémon store called "Original 151" opened up in my local mall. It's one of the coolest stores I've ever been in. It's got all sorts of Pokémon merchandise that any fan would go nuts over. They were hiring more help for the season, so I applied, interviewed, and got hired on for the season, possibly permanently if things go well.

Today was my first day, and I can already tell it's going to be an amazing work experience. I get to work with products that I have a personal interest in, with people who are as passionate if not more about Pokemon as I am. And the best part? Watching the kids come in and lose their minds at all the products we offer. 9 year old me would have passed out right in the doorway.

So yeah. I'm just really happy, and I wanted to share this with y'all. Pokémon has been an obsession of mine for nearly fifteen years. This job is an absolute dream come true!

(I swear I never do this, but thank you all for the awards and well wishes. It's people like you guys that made me want this job, and why I'll enjoy it so much. You all rock, and if you ever get to stop by the store, I look forward to seeing you and hooking you up with some sweet Pokémon products!)

Why does every Poketuber rely so heavily on clickbait?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 03:12 AM PST

This is something that's been on my mind over the past few days, and I need to vent about it. Literally every single Youtuber who focuses on Pokémon relies so heavily on clickbait for their videos. Multiple words and phrases in all caps, arrows everywhere, obnoxious reaction face on the thumbnail. And when you watch them, nine times out of ten, they're overly loud, overreacting to every little thing, and quite frankly, are just rude people in general.

It was seeing a video from SacredAlmighty that made me realise this. He had a thumbnail for Radical Red that implied Giovanni was using an Eternamax Eternatus, but Eternatus doesn't appear at any point during the video. And it's not the only one. So many of the guy's videos have something in the thumbnail that outright doesn't show up in the video itself.

Whatever happened to just being an honest, nice person?

    I miss Marriland...

    A guaranteed Prediction for pokemon's 25th anniversary.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:11 AM PST

They will resell pokemon red, blue and yellow on the switch, but that's not all.

Nintendo are also gonna produce mini gameboys with pokemon red, blue and yellow built in, and is only one game per system inside, for 50 bucks each i'll never reduce price, and is a limited release, the only way you can find them is on ebay for 300 bucks each.

It’s already been a year since Sword and Shield released

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 10:25 AM PST

And soon it'll be two years since the game was announced, wow. I remember getting home from school last year on November 15th and rushing to the mailbox to get my copy of Pokémon Sword from Amazon lol. The game wasn't great but at least it was fun, I beat it in 3 days with around 30 hours of playtime. Honestly I haven't touched the game much since then. Sw/Sh is a good game for a small studio, but there's no reason it should be as lackluster as it is considering it's a main series title in the largest media franchise ever. I'm somewhat hopeful for future games though, I know we got the DLC this year but that's not really a full game, we're finally getting a year off without a new main series game. I'm hoping we'll get actual new animations, and just an overall next gen Pokemon experience next year, or in a few years. I don't care how long it takes, I just want the future games to be innovative.

6 things I'd like to see in future games.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 02:22 AM PST

With a likely remake of diamond and pearl coming next year I thought I'd share what I'd like to see come to future games. These are just my ideas from what I've thought of and seen other people talk about.

1: Pokemon follow you like in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Right from the start of the game I'd love this to be available. There's something amazing and satisfying about having your Pokemon partners follow along behind you as you explore the region and it's something I've always loved about the HG/SS games. They did bring it for the Sword and Shield but id love to see it for all poke on from the very start.

2: Age changer. As a 20 year old who still enjoys playing the games id love to be able to change the age of my character and not have to play as a 10 year old kid. The reason behind you starting your Pokemon journey the age you are could also be different for different ages. For someone my age it could be something they have to do in order to become a gym leader or an elite four member because that's what they want to do as a career or for someone a bit older it's because it's something they've always wanted to do when they were younger but life got in the way of it happening and they weren't able to pursue their dream of travelling and battling.

3: Difficulty changer. I'm not the only one that's noticed that the newer games are a bit straight forward and easy especially for more experienced players like myself. I'd like to see a difficulty changer for people who want a challenge and not have to rely on Nuzlocks and other self made challenges to make it more difficult. Example, "Trainer" mode for beginners who are just starting their first game, "Gym Leader" mode for people who are a bit experienced and want a little challenge, "Elite" mode for people who are very experienced and "Pokemon Master" mode for the elitist of the elite. I also think the master mode would be cool just because it really emphasises you actually being a Pokemon Master if you complete the game.

4: Bring HMs back (sort of). A lot of people don't like the HMs and while I agree they were a pain the ass they also made you think about who you would need on your team and what your move pool is going to be. I think bringing them back would be cool BUT I don't think they should be compulsery. I think a good way to work with them is have Pokemon be able to do things they naturally would be able to do. For example, where you would normally need the HM Cut to get past a tree in the road, I think if you had a fire type on your team you could burn it down and continue. However I also think you should also have to defeat the gym in order to do this. If you were to attempt to destroy the tree before you got the required badge a notice could pop up like "your Pokemon hasn't been granted permission to do this" or "you would need to defeat the gym in order to do this" or just something like that. Another example is a flying license. You would need to defeat a certain gym in order for your Pokemon to be able to transport you around the region but you would also need to have a Pokemon big enough to carry you (you know just so you can't fly around on pidgeys back). But after that gym any Pokemon like TalonFlame, Staraptor, Noivern, Flygon etc could carry you around without needing the HM Fly. So pretty much the old way where you would need to defeat a gym in order to progress but also allow relative Pokemon to complete the same action.

5: Rivals. I like the idea of Sun and Moon where you had a friendly (Hop) and a more aggressive non friendly rival (I can't remember his name) but I'd also like them to be real rivals. Your rivals are there to make you progress as a trainer and to test your strength against someone who has a similar goal so why do the new games make them so easy. I'd really like your friendly rival to go back to picking the Pokemon you are weak against and I'd like your unfriendly rival to pick one of three other Pokemon depending on your starter. Example, If you pick a water type your friend will pick grass and your other rival will have an electric type from wherever they came from.

6: Villains. My opinion is that they need to have more emphasise on the organisation being villanous. While I like the humour they put into the grunts I think the organisations as a whole just don't feel...... Evil enough. I don't know how I would improve it but I just feel there is something that they are missing.

For better or worse, the games are still mostly the same as Red and Green

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 03:59 AM PST

Sorry, this is a long one, but I've put a TL;DR at the bottom.

A thought occurred to me the other day when I saw a list of features removed from the games over the generations, such as seasons, the PSS, Join Avenue, Battle Frontier, Mega Evolution, etc. You know, those pictures that were popular for a while around the launch of SwSh. At first I thought "sure, I miss those features too, but bringing them all back at the same time probably wouldn't be feasible". And then it was like something flipped. I no longer saw the picture as a list of features we would like to return, but as a count of how many times Game Freak have reverted a feature.

It's commonly said about the Pokémon games that they take one step forwards, one step back. The list stood out to me as a count of how many steps were once taken forward and then back again.

In that context, it didn't matter as much what those steps included. It was the idea of stepping forward-then-back that irked me. Each of those features - seasons, Mega Evolution, secret bases, etc. - represent a form of innovation around the core formula of Pokémon. Instead of building on those innovations, developing them into part of the core formula, they were rolled back.

That got me thinking some more. Back to what? Back to a "default", it seems like. Back to the core formula. Back to the scope of Pokémon Red and Green.

For better or worse, things have not changed much in this franchise since the first games on the Game Boy. Or, well, the game mechanics have changed quite a bit. Held items, weather, three new types and some type chart tweaks, physical/special split, and of course Abilities. There is also a lot more Pokémon, moves, items, etc. to play with than before. But in terms of content and scope, the "core formula" if you want, things have stood still practically forever, and most deviations have been reverted as if they were one-time experiments that were never intended to stick.

Gen III introduced Pokémon Contests, which as a concept was developed and changed slightly for two more generations before being absent from Gen VI on. Riding Pokémon was a limited thing for two generations and got booted again in Gen VIII. Secret Bases were there for two generations (three if you count the limited room decoration feature in Gen II), but the concept was abandoned in Gen V. Rollback, rollback, rollback. Always back to the precedent of Gen I. Games made in the late 1990s (released half a year before Super Mario 64, for context). We're in the 2020s now and content-wise, the games are largely the same now as they were back then.

Meanwhile, some things never change. The story is almost always the same. There's always a professor, an evil team, and a legendary Pokémon. Towns lie along numbered Routes like pearls on a string, and you visit them in a set order. The same Pokémon archetypes tend to be present in every generation (starters, regional birds, regional bugs, etc.). The game mechanics have evolved slightly as mentioned above, but remain mainly the same. A broad-strokes description of Red and Green would also describe Sword and Shield pretty well.

It's as if the course of Pokémon was staked out back in the nineties, with a list of boxes the main series Pokémon games have to check, and any additional content would have to only be temporary. As if they're allowed to stick some extra bells and whistles on the series as long as they promise to take them away again later. Mechanics changes are allowed to stick (for the most part), but in terms of things to do in gameplay, there hasn't been a whole lot of progress since the GameBoy days.

On the other hand, the concepts being so familiar from one game to the next is part of what made Pokémon so successful. If you've played one Pokémon game before, you know exactly how to play them all. You know what you're going to get with a Pokémon game, and how you are going to get it. No need to find your way around new ways of doing things, no way of getting lost in a huge new overworld, or learning new battle mechanics, or keeping up with an intricate story. For the most part, every Pokémon, move, and item will behave exactly like it did in the previous game. If you've played and liked one Pokémon game, you can play and like them all.

But then again, other franchises have thrived just fine by changing up their formula, it's not like players have abandoned them for changing minute details or even core assumptions of gameplay. And in some cases, I think it's fair to say Game Freak has been unreasonably stubborn in keeping things exactly as they were. Some Pokémon cries and menu sounds have been retained since the GameBoy days. The games feature a 3D camera in battle now, but every player action resets the camera to the over-the-shoulder view from the earlier generations - to the point that Pokémon models have been scaled down in battle to make this view look nice, rather than displaying the actual size of the Pokémon from a different angle. In the overworld, the camera is also mostly locked - although this may have been done to save time in development.

It might just be me, but I think the games could do with a little bit more innovation over time, rather than always going back to the "safe choice" which is to make the games as much as possible like the debut game from the mid-1990s. But of course, if they stray too much from the safe path, the games will not be like they always were, which may upset the long-time fans. What are your thoughs on this balance?

TL;DR - in terms of content (not mechanics - usually) the games have a tendency over time to revert back to the norms established in Gen I. This may be seen as a lack of innovation, but also part of Pokémon's appeal, and balancing the two would be a very difficult act. Or would it?

    Suggestion

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 07:52 AM PST

Hi everyone. As a kid, I mainly played Pokémon red, blue, yellow, gold, silver, emerald, Ruby, sapphire, and diamond. I also played Pokémon coliseum for the gamecube. Within the last year, I bought a Nintendo switch. I was curious if you all knew which current switch Pokémon game compared most similarly to the old classics I used to play? I am out of the times and figured I'd ask the experts here. Thank you in advance.

A thought about Peony and Hop

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 09:54 AM PST

I was going through the star tournament earlier and I was facing Leon and Peony together and I had a thought. How would the game change if Peony was in the actual main game? Mostly because I felt that Hop and Peony had a whole lot in common while also being complete opposites. They're both the younger brothers of powerful and popular people in galar and I really think Hop could have learned how to be his own person outside of Leon's shadow, I really wanted to see him interact with Peony and was actually sad when they didn't. Hop could have finally put all those complicated emotions regarding his self esteem. This would have even worked if Hop and Sonia where swapped around in the dlc. Also it would have been interesting if Peony found put exactly what his brother had done and we got to see those emotions play out as well

If Pokémon ever gets voice acted cutscenes - would you like them localized or not?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 05:13 AM PST

In a world of dreams, where the main Pokemon games step up a notch to match the expectations of a modern AAA-RPG and get something like cutscenes and voice acting (Yes, Swoshi had some cutscenes, but their quality was... okay), would you like them localized in your local language? Or would you prefer japanese voice actors in all translated version and subtitles only?

I personally can't really decide, as both options have their charm:

(-) Japanese Seiyuu really put their heart into their role, and whenever I have the choice to watch an anime or film in the original language, I choose it over the localized version.

(+) I recently played Kingdom Hearts with my 7yo nephew, and I had to pause every new scene in a cutscene because otherwise he wouldn't understand what's happening in the cutscenes, as they're only english (I'm native german, btw). Looking back, I wouldn't have gotten into gaming that much if I hadn't had localized voice acting back in the day. So for children this would definitely be better.

In any case, having the choice like we have with the language in the games since XY would my preferred way.

    What do you think?

    Questions about the DLC

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 08:52 AM PST

I'm going to purchase the Sw/Sh DLC, I have Pokémon Shield and am shortly going to buy Sword because of the fact that The Crown Tundra has game exclusives, (I could get both Urshifus, G-Max Starters, and Regis) however, if I buy the DLC, of course, I have to choose which game version I have. So this is my question: if I buy the Sw/Sh DLC, and get the Shield version, will I have to buy the other version to play it on Sword?

    Possibly valuable card?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:29 AM PST

I just found out that my misprinted Yveltal was valuable, but I don't know how much it's worth there are only about 5 pictures of this card error online and only one for sale on eBay (still in the package so it is irrelevant). I went into a card shop and they didn't know anything but pointed me to Reddit for advice. It's in almost perfect condition and am looking to sell it.

The card is a promo so the number is XY32 if that helps the damage on the second attack is missing

Number 3 on this list of misprints https://www.ludkinscollectables.com/blog/the-modern-error-card

Can you help me find out the value of this card?

What pokemon moves have wrong typing in your opinion?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 02:18 AM PST

I see many threads and youtube videos about the pokemon themselves, but what are types even good for without moves having types too? So now I want to give moves the respect they deserve as the main thing that makes pokemon battles how they are (except pokemon maybe) by asking you: which of them are mistyped?

I'll start by giving my own examples:

Drill Run should be Steel type because it looks like one with the animation and it was made for the Steel type Excadrill (who could really use a late Steel-type move). Also being super effective against Steel, Fire and Electric makes very little sense for it.

Bonemerang should be Ghost-type. Now, I know what you want to say: "But Bonemerang is the signature move of Marowak who isn't a ghost type!" And I know that, but Marowak is known for having ghost powers (ask the guys on the pokemon theorizing Discord) and Bonemerang seems to be using them for using the move. Also - there's Alolan Marowak.

So now it's your turn: which pokemon moves should have a different type and why?

Pokemon: Power of us. A movie I respect, but not like (review)

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 06:58 AM PST

"Pokémon: Power of us" is the 21th Pokémon Movie and continues to tell the story of the Ash introduced in "Pokémon I choose you" although the movie is the most standalone movie of all of them. Where even the Region isnt confirmed!

This is a movie were I felt that the story wanted to be the Pokémon counterpart to "Pulp Fiction" with a story that includes many of storys that are standalone, yet connected. And I respect it for that, even if I think the movie is bad, its the kind of bad I would hug instead of beat to death.

Unlike the previous movie, "Pokémon I choose you" which I really hate, and is the kind of bad I dislike. I could talk in depth about being bad and how I like bad things like the mario bros 3 cartoon or maybe even SAO, but this is about Movie 21 "Pokémon the Power of us"

I will go over every subplot, and tell you my opinion:

    Subplot 1: Risa

I barely remember her, she was the "I dislike animals" archetype who caught a Eevee. The thing with the Eevee was wierd, the Eevee hated Risa before being caught but after that was super friendly. But yeah... I barely remember her

    Subplot 2: Callahan

The subplot I like most, I found him actually sympaphatic and I almost felt emotional for him, and that is a good sign. Although the reason for his lie to get revealed is contrived, I really like him. Yeah, he was one of the best parts of the movie

    Subplot 3: Team Rocket

Well... after being totally shafted in the first movie, and feeling like a last second insert. Here they got a minor role. Did not really like it, but hey. It was leagues better than the movie were they had NO ROLE

    Subplot 4: Toren

He was ok, I remember at least things about him. Unlike Risa, I remember his arc. I think I mainly find him ok because I am a nerd archetype.

    Subplot 5: Hariet

The second best, mainly for simplicity and being a good comical relief, if you know what I mean. Kinda a better version of Risa, with a similar "Does not like pokemon" attidute. Also liked her involvement in the main plot more.

    Subplot 6: Margo and Zeraora

So, Margo is good but generic, Zeraora is generic in concept and meh in execution. He is leagues better tied into than Marshadow, but still he is someone I do not care for at all.

    Subplot 7: Ash

Unlike the other bad main heroes who at least had a concept. Risa has a tale about learning to like pokemon, Team Rocket has a comical relief role and how they accidently help, Torren has a tale of learning to get courage, Hariet has a tale of forgetting the past and Zeraora has a tale of learning that humans are not the same. But Ash... is just there. They tried to make a standalone story, but Ash was still there and without a worthwhile reason, other than being the generic kid, he is the worst, I hate a bad concept more than a bad execution

So, yeah, actually my description has not hit them that bad. Like for a movie I overall dislike, I was not soo negative up to this point.

I think the movie is in concept great and the best pokemon movie to date, but in execution it lacks. It could have been in the high leagues alongside detective pikachu and the third pokemon movie. Honestly, to fix it I would suggest removing Ash, because he has no purpose. And remove Risa because I think that she adds nothing

Keep the general plot and idea the same. I think that making it all about five plots is easier to manage, I think you should focus the rework on Toren and Zeraora. And then... when the plot is reworked and more focused, we would have a great movie. A masterpiece

But dont get me wrong, in its current state I still respect power of us for trying to be a good standalone movie, and even if the movie is bad, Its still a attempt I respect more than most pokémon movie, even once I like more than power of us

Just curious, what are some of the coolest Trainer ID's you have gotten?

Thought it would be cool to have a discussion and see some of those sick IDs! I have gotten a couple of cool IDs over the years, and I am interested to see what you have! One other question, do you reset for an ID till you get a cool one, or do you just go with what you get?

Almost at 3,000,000 Pokemon trainers and I'm proud that so many people probably shared the same childhood game as me. What was your first version exclusive?

My first game is Pokemon Firered. That was 11 years ago. Gameboy colors weren't so popular in my country so I didn't start with Pokemon RBY but this game provided so much nostalgic factor for me. I still remember the earliest memory I had in Viridian Forest. The sound and animation of the Caterpie's String Shot hitting my Squirtle is still buried in my mind up to this day. I also remember not beating the game since Lorelei wiped my entire team with Lapras and all I had left was Blastoise, which knew 4 Water-type moves lol.

How about you? What was your first game that made you love Pokemon as much as we do now?

    MORE CHALLENGE IDEAS

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 10:22 AM PST

I destroyed the first one that Jstrat gave me so after doing a couple "only ___ runs" of Riolu and Aipom I think its time to do another run.

    Again, the rules:

    - Send me a challenge in the comments.

    - I can do pretty much anything this time

    - I can do all DS and GBA games.
