To get a Dragon Fang in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald - a real story of madness

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:55 PM PST

Dear God, this item is ridiculously well tucked away in R/S/E. To some of you out there, even those who've played R/S/E before, this is going to be the very first time you have seen this information.

There's virtually no way you'd get the Dragon Fang in R/S/E without looking it up beforehand. To get the Dragon Fang in R/S/E, you have to steal it from Dragon Tamer Nicolas... who only has the item equipped on one Pokemon (a Shelgon)... and Shelgon does not have it equipped the first three times you fight Nicolas.

That has got to be one of the most obscure ways to obtain an item I have ever seen in any video game. Literally no one in-game gives you any hints as to the whereabouts of this item, none of the Pokemon in the wild in R/S/E can hold the Dragon Fang, you're not gifted this item by anyone, and you can't buy the Dragon Fang in R/S/E either. You probably wouldn't even notice the effect of the Dragon Fang from Shelgon, since its special attack sucks and DragonBreath is low power. This is supposed to be your one stop shop for Dragon Fangs in Hoenn.

Keep in mind that Nicolas is hiding in the portion of Meteor Falls that is only accessible once you get Waterfall - so it's an area you can only access near the very end of the game - and said area is optional, so you can go through your whole playthrough without even going up the waterfall of Meteor Falls.

Even if you rematch Nicolas enough times to get his Shelgon to that point of holding a Dragon Fang, unless you already knew he had it, I don't think "I will use Thief/Covet on all of Nicolas' Pokemon to see if they have any hold items" is a thought that actually goes through your mind when you're battling one of the strongest and most obscure trainers that you can rematch in R/S/E, especially when considering that Thief/Covet can only be learned by a handful of Pokemon unless you use your Thief TM.

    But The plot thickens.

After being so bewildered by just how convoluted a method it is to get a simple Dragon Fang, I thought to myself, "Surely there can't be more examples of this", and lo and behold, there were! There actually were! Nicolas is not alone!

    WHAT THE FUCK!

On Route 115, Black Belt Nob is a trainer you can rematch as well. After the fourth rematch, his ace is a Machamp, and said Machamp happens to be holding the ONLY Black Belt in the entire Hoenn region! Even worse, this item is 100% unobtainable in FRLG, unlike the Dragon Fang, which can be found 5% of the time on wild Dragonair in FRLG. edit 3: you can steal Black Belts off of other Black Belts in FRLG, thank you comments. Black Belt Nob is your only way to get a Black Belt in R/S/E.

Finally, this maddening saga reaches its conclusion. On Route 120, Bug Maniac Brandon (or Jefferey in Emerald for some reason). Same shtick as before, just to get the SilverPowder, this time being held by his Masquerain. Like the Black Belt, completely unobtainable in FRLG. Edit 2: you can get the Silver Powder in FRLG, but only on wild Venomoth 5% of the time.

There you go folks. If you ever wondered why you could never find a SilverPowder, Black Belt, or Dragon Fang in gen 3 to save your life, there you go. 99% of you probably never even wondered about this, which goes to show just how well hidden these three items truly are. Pure madness.

Edit: I would like to give a big, big thank you to Serebii and Bulbapedia for teaching me this information. Without them, I wouldn't have learned of this knowledge that causes my brain to short circuit. If anyone that contributes to either of these websites is reading this, thank you very much.
