The absolute irony of Sword and Shield Competitive Online

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:51 AM PST

"So, you want to be the next Pokemon Master to beat em' all on the online "leaderboards", do you? In that case, you should familiarize yourself with the new mechanic, DYNAMAXING. Temporarily double the HP of your pokemon by making them the off-spring of Godzilla the Destroyer himself, empowering your moves to generate terrain, weather, or other stat effects. And if you want to be a part of the real big boy leagues, you might even consider using our brand new gameplay mechanic, one of 26 GIGANTAMAX FORMS which provide even further effects beyond simple weather, terrain or stat effects. But in order to obtain one of these sweet and cool new Gigantamax moves, you first have to hunt down the exact form you would like to use in competitive battle, with only a 0.175% spawn rate, giving you a true end-game or trading goal to complete now that we removed any kind of need for breeding correct IVs or battling wild pokemon for specific EVs-"

"Uh, Dave. They can't use Gigantamax in competitive."

    "...What?"

"Yeah we cut that feature from competitive."

"Wait, so they can't Dynamax in competitive pokemon battles? I thought that was the entire schtick of this generation! Then what the hell am I grinding a 0.175% chance for?"

"Well yeah they can still Dynamax but we won't allow them to bring Gigantamax pokemon into competitive."

"...Bring me Reggie on the phone."

"Dave, he doesn't work for Nintendo anymo-"

"Do I look like I care?"

Edit: There is apparently Gigantamaxing in some competition alter down the line which I hope includes online ranked, but what is even the point of not allowing them right now is the question.

Giant Mewtwo inside an incubation chamber at the new Pokémon Center / Nintendo Tokyo Store that opened in Parco Shibuya

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 06:23 PM PST

Did anyone else really enjoy this game, despite acknowledging its problems?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:01 AM PST

Right, I'm just going to say it. I just finished the main game, and I absolutely loved it. Some of the new pokemon have become some of my new favourites, I love the wild area, and the Gyn challenge is everything I wanted in a league tournament.

That said, I do understand and agree with a lot of the criticisms. Whilst the whole dexit thing and the graphics dont bother me too much, I accept these things could be better. The story felt a bit rushed or cut short in a lot of areas (would have loved to see them do more with Bede, but he ultimately felt pasted into the story with minimal impact). The game could have had some more polish in areas (my biggest nitpick is some of the battle backdrops. I fished up a pokemon in Hammerlocke, but the backdrop was the same as a grassy route?).

However, despite all the shortcomings, I had an absolute blast, and cant wait to get into catching more pokemon, getting back into breeding and doing some shiny hunts. I have a feeling that (Now that all the story stuff has been finished), the games effort to streamline and focus on competitive battling and shiny hunting is going to come through.

To the people who didnt like the game, I truly sorry to hear that, and your opinion is just as important. I genuinely hope Game Freak bring what you want to the table for the next release.

Fun Fact: Toxic when used by Posion type never misses. Even through moves like Dig. What other moves have neat, unwritten effects?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 09:25 AM PST

Was working my way through Battle Tower with a Weezing and was landing Toxic through moves like Dig, Phantom Force and Bounce. I thought it was a bug, turns out its been that way since XY! This makes me wonder what other moves have substantial updates that are not noted in game because this Toxic change seems pretty sweet and I wonder if I am missing out!

    Towards a more BOTW-themed Pokemon

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:02 AM PST

After playing Pokemon SwSh, it just felt as though GF had some potentially great features but they slipped in their executions. One of them is the Wild Area, where these new wide spaces of land brim with Pokemon of all levels and evolution, varying with weather. However, due to plot/story-telling constraints, wild areas just end up appearing very linear and bland (they look like 2/3 wide routes spanning from Point A to Point B).

One thing that consistently irked me in Pokemon games was that somehow, the main character always travel through said region with a linear path. And while this made story progression a lot easier to cope, with so many titles under their belt, perhaps GF could change the way they approach this game.

Sometimes I wonder what Pokemon would look like if they took this concept all the way, to give a BoTW feel, in the way the Trainer could better interact with the environment and Pokemon.

    - Imagine a huge plot of land where the player is free to roam wherever he pleases. Although roads cover the length of the map, there is no set path, whether the player chooses to travel via the main road or through mountains and forests is entirely up to him.

Just like Sw/Sh, within these regions, different Pokemon appear in their respective habitats, varying in respective weather & seasons. It's a good step and I would like to see more of this, maybe having Pokemon populate the actual trees and interact with their weather instead of just flocking in those small patches of grass. Not just their surroundings, but with the player and weather as well. For example, in the rain, some water Pokemon like Mudkip would come out of their little lakes to walk on land; while Pokemon with types weak to Water scurry to find shelter.

Different habitats could also be unique to their own species/types. Flying types like Pidgey can be found in nests high up in trees that players have to climb to encounter them. But sometimes they fly to the ground in search of Bug type Pokemon, who are found in small crevices hiding from these predators, where players can catch them more easily. Ultimately, the player has multiple options to capture a certain Pokemon from their individual routines in the world.

And within these habitats, rarer or stronger Pokemon can be found in the more extreme areas of the map, but would need more requirements to access these areas (E.g. A mountain peak might have strong Ice Pokemon but be too difficult for players to initially enter, but with the right equipment obtained in-game and maybe riding a Fire Pokemon, one can come back later to hunt down and catch these Ice Pokemon).

Even the smallest places, such as the rocks that litter the forests, can also contribute. When a player lifts it up, he can hope to find items or even a occasional Rock Pokemon fleeing from the rock.

    - And although Gyms are still found in the towns scattered through the region, the player should also have the control to tackle them in any particular order. Just like in Pokemon Origins, Gym leaders would battle trainers based on the number of badges they have earned.

And with each Gym Milestone, the player could be rewarded with a "skill" (I.E. a HM) that would assist the player in exploration but not necessarily for story progression. Perhaps it could have the HM Waterfall which could allow the player to return to previously non-accessible water places with new Pokemon and items, but would not be necessary to complete the game at all. Or even HM Fly, an indispensable HM in every Pokemon game (except Sw/Sh, with the CorviTaxi). Just like the Eon flute, players can fly their Pokemon freely in the sky to wherever they wish, skipping entire areas for the sole sake of convenience.

Trainers can also travel through the roads between towns instead of standing idly and waiting for you to come. Some walk by or ride their Pokemon, selling their items or even battle with you.

    - Lastly, instead of having the conventional potions and revives, why not allow the player to craft them themselves?

Different habitats/regions can have their own unique ingredients to create healing and battling items. For instance, an "Ice Flower" from colder region could mix with berries to form new Burn-Heals (juice) or so to say. Or cooking different berries with side-effects can heal Pokemon or give stat-inducing buffs in battle.

Ultimately, these options give the player more freedom in how they want to play Pokemon, and would make the game a lot more fun and interactive.

What I'm trying to convey that is that, despite the criticism, GF certainly has created concepts such as Wild Areas to work around and create a new direction for the Pokemon franchise. Although there are evident problems about Sw/Sh, the little changes like making the Pokemon League "commercialised" and "televised", bustling with crowds instead of the old Elite 4 always make the game more refreshing in a way.

And it's these little changes in different aspects of the game that can steer us from how we see Pokemon by working on them and developing them through the years with the help of technology which makes us enjoy the game, not by suddenly slapping a new mechanic and throwing the game upside down (I'm looking at you, Dynamaxing).

So, imo, if GF is willing and dedicated enough to exit their comfort zone and try to steer the way we see Pokemon from just linear gameplay and story progression, I think they could produce a game we could all finally look forward to.

A big problem I have with Sword and Shield

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:44 AM PST

I hate the league uniform and the biking outfit. I love how I've made my trainer look and it pains me that I can't look how I want in gym battles. I also hate that I can't look how I want on my bike. I am a very impatient person, and it pains me that the fastest way to get around makes me look horrible and I can't change it. Promoting safety through video games is nice and all, but I at least want to have the option to wear my normal clothes with a helmet on.

PSA for those hosting Max Raid battles of rare/gigantimax/version exclusive pokemon

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:26 AM PST

Hold the lobby open until the timer runs out. The Y Comm system is so slow that if you only leave your raid open for 30 seconds then most people don't get a chance to join.

After all, even someone that has no idea what they are doing or is woefully underleveled is still better than the game giving you a rando magikarp or three pokemon that are weak to the pokemon that you are battling in the raid.

I enjoyed Pokémon Sword but it was not worth 60 USD and I won’t be buying a sequel unless it promises serious improvements

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 03:32 PM PST

I went into these games with no spoilers and found them enjoyable. I've seen a lot of opinions on Sword and Shield that are both good and bad. I think the game was fun and I personally didn't care that much about dexit or reused animations, but it had a different set of issues for me.

    1. Pacing and length: the game was extremely slow and at the same time extremely short. I managed to extend my play through by spending a huge amount of time making curry and doing raids and it still only got to about 28 hours.

    2. Dynamax/Gigantamax: this is easily the worst gimmick in the entire Pokémon series. Aside from being a bland hybrid between mega-evolution and z-moves, the visuals aren't even that cool. It seems like a lazy and boring way to kill off two cool features.

    3. Online: not sure what the hell nintendo and game freak have against implementing proper online gameplay, but this is another example. Trying to use the y-comms to join raids is a pain in the ass that rarely works. I'm not sure why the GTS is gone either, but that was a big mistake too. I don't even feel inclined to try to grind out the Pokédex like this, and I sure as shit will not pay 60 bucks for a copy of shield to get the mons I don't have.

    4. The story: it's rushed and has very little substance. While I certainly don't play Pokémon for the story, I never really felt invested in anything other than getting through the gyms to beat Leon and shut him the fuck up.

Conclusion: I don't regret buying the game because I've had a lot of fun with it and probably will continue to enjoy it, but I don't think it's a 60 dollar game if you put it next to other 40 dollar Pokémon games that were far more enjoyable and offered far better content, and I won't be buying the sequel unless there are some serious changes.

The japanese lore reason and the Brittish lore reason on why this new pokemon X has so complicated evolution method.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:40 PM PST

Because this is technically spoilers and games haven't been out for two weeks I had make the tittle like that

We have all met the new galarian Yamask and pondered why it has such a needlesly complicated way to evolution.

It needs to take 49 hp damage and when it is in party player needs to pass under a stone arch in the wild area.

The numbers 4 and 9 are unlucky numbers in japanese culture. Number 4 (shi) sounds like the word for death (shi). number 9 (ku) sounds like word for agony (ku). Number 49 sounds like the word like the word Shiku "be runned over/die in agony". Naturally like westerners avoid the number 13, japanese avoid the numbers 4 and 9.

The stone arch player must go under has a particular shape. Stone structures like that are called "Dolmen". They are ancient places humans build that are associated with death, magic and funerals. Many think they are ancient tombs.

So you take your Yamask full of misfortune/dying in pain to a burial place/tomb to get its new sarcophagus.

Like sargophagi were made describe how the pharaohs looked like while alive, Runestones, which Runerigus is based on, usually depicted stories about the person when he was alive.

Also TM49 is known as "sand tomb" which runerigus can learn, but Cofagrigus can't

Damn, this thing is quickly becoming my new favorite galar pokemon.

Edit: thank you for u/luca998. Number 49 is yonjuukyuu in japan. But japanese do avoid combining the numbers 4 and 9 on streets and license plates since they pronounce together shiku.

I just noticed that Ghetsis's Hydreigon has Frustration and holds a Life Orb

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 09:59 AM PST

I didn't notice it at first but after replaying B2 again and seeing his Hydreigon used Frustration then its HP got reduced by Life Orb, it made me realize: Ghetsis never care about his pokemon( Frustration's power is based on how much the Pokemon hates its trainer, it could also means that his Pokemon really hates him) and only sees them as a tool, he doesn't care if his Pokemon is fainted or not as long as they can defeat the enemy( Life Orb can increase a move's power but it can make the holder faint due to the recoil damage).

I don't know about you guys but I really like these kind of little detail. It shows how much the developers actually care about the story and characters.

If Sinnoh remakes do happen, should Arceus be given more spotlight?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:45 AM PST

If the chance these remakes do become a thing would you agree that more should be done with Arceus like how the previous remastered versions and sequels used Rayquaza in Emerald and ORAS, Giritina in Platinum, Kyurem in BW2 and Necrozma in the Ultra games.

Do you think it should have an entire revolved around it or something like the Delta Episode where it's not the main story but a side story for post game content. Maybe it should be given a new form? It's suppose to be the creator of the Pokemon world but nowadays when you compare stats it gets outmatched by Megas, Primals, U.Necrozma, and even the recent ulta forms of Zacian and Zamazenta. I think it time for this "God" to be given an upgrade.

    Your thoughts?

How would you react if Pokémon went back to pixelated graphics, but made the world MUCH bigger?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 06:18 PM PST

There are so many phenomenal rom hacks of older Pokémon games, and indie developers are really flourishing with the "hi-bit" era. On the Switch, theoretically, you could make an amazing sprite/pixel-based world. I don't really think the general population of Pokémon players would be on board with this, though. Feel free to confirm or challenge this inference?

    Pokemon Crystal is A M A Z I N G

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:23 AM PST

Hi everyone. I'll keep my post in bullet points to make it shorter. Basically:

    - The only Gameboy/color-era Pokemon game I've played was Blue; skipped Gen 2 and went straight to the GBA games.

    - I've only played a bit of Gen 2 via emulating Soul Silver. Didn't really get to finish it.

    - With all the hype from Sword and Shield, I figured I'd get Crystal on the 3DS just to cross it off my log.

    - TBH I was expecting it to be very similar to both Red and Blue. Graphics aside, boy was I wrong - hold items, dark -type moves, berries, a more organized item menu, day and night cycle, the ability to go back to Kanto - honestly I felt like I was playing a Gen 3 game but with older graphics.

    - Really loving this game.
