What are Max Raids?

Max Raid Battles are a mechanic in Pokémon Sword and Shield in which four trainers battle against a wild Dynamaxed Pokémon for a chance to catch it at the end. Pokémon caught in these raids may have their Hidden Ability or the ability to Gigantamax.

Types of Max Raids Hosted

A host shares an active Pokémon den with up to 3 other participants. These hosts often use resetting methods to repeatedly share the same den over and over so that many participants have a chance of catching a rare Pokémon!

Dens typically hosted include (but are not limited to):

Shiny Pokémon
Gigantamax Pokémon
Version Exclusive Pokémon
Hidden Ability (HA) Pokémon
Pokémon with perfect or near perfect IVs
5 IV or 6 IV Ditto

Community Philosophy

The community operates under the principle of paying it forward—if everyone is willing to host raids without expecting to receive anything in return, everyone wins!

In fact, to encourage the spirit of generosity and avoid transactionality, trading is forbidden on the subreddit. There is no expectation or requirement for participants to "pay their way" into a raid by giving up a masterball or shiny Pokémon just for a chance at capturing a rare Pokémon. Our hosts share these dens out of kindness, generosity, and for the sense of community. If you're a host who shares this philosophy as well, we'd love to have you!

Joining the Max Raid Community

/r/pokemonmaxraids has many threads posted each day with invitations to join raids! The posts are tagged with a post flair to easily search for raids that you're interested in: Shiny, Gigantamax, Ditto, etc.

Discord

There is an active Discord server with many live raids happening daily! Much of the raid coordination happens on Discord, as it's easy for hosts to communicate lobby numbers and for participants to be notified about new raids.

Flair Levels

Flair levels are a way to reward the generosity of our community's raid hosts by offering them perks in the form of user flair on the subreddit and role colors on the Discord. Hosts can qualify for flair levels based on the number of users who participate in raids hosted on the subreddit or in our Discord server.
