A short synopsis on every game

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:59 AM PDT

Red/Blue: You run around bullying kids so you can go beat up adults are oust the champion from his full time job with your fire dragon

Gold/Silver: You have a really evil rival and team rocket fires probably gamma rays at every Pokémon ever giving them bad radiation poisoning but they look cool so it's ok

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald: You find out that these evil teams with no ability to color coordinate orbs have woken up literal terraforming monsters because.... reasons?

FR/LG: It's like gen 1 but with gen 3's trumpets

Diamond/Pearl/Platinum: Once again an evil team with evil agendas and an evil leader has awoken the gods of time and space but if you are playing the other game he awakens a demonic reality destroying deathly dimension beast

HG/SS: It's like gen 2 with more legendaries

Black/White: Some vegans with a castle are protesting so you kidnap their king and beat up his dad for having a different opinion

Black 2/White 2: it's like Black and White except with better cover art and the vegans are pirates now

X/Y: There was a war and a sad guy so go catch this deer

OR/AS: It's like gen 3 but with more rayquaza and more VGC players in eternal pain

Sun/Moon: There are no more gyms only infestations here have a Pokémon and play exterminator for a whole game while we handhold you for no reason

US/UM: It's like gen 7 but with more abominations

LGP/LGE: It's like gen one with more cute

Sword/Sheild: Your friend has depression and you have to continually beat up his mediocre team so you can stop the president from beating the champion before you do

Severely underrated: The Badge Check Gates in Pokemon Black & White

I had almost completely forgotten about this, but while I was replaying White and got to this part, I realized what a cool idea it really was. Entering gate after gate, remembering every single gym, as the music builds up until it becomes the victory road theme, ugh! So great.
It feels like going through airport security, only way more fun.

Anyone wishing Game Freak would take a page out of the Mario book and give us "Pokemon maker" to capitalize on the growing popularity of Randomizers?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:04 AM PDT

Honestly though, all the replayability for modern pokemon games comes from competitive battling. Randomizers have completely revitalized gen's 1-5 in regards to the story experience/playing through the game, but it's all been happening in spite of Nintendo and Game Freak, instead of them leading the charge.

Look at the level of customability on fan made Randomizers already and just imagine how much better it could get.

Gen 6 is pretty barebones, but I'd replay it in a heartbeat if they let me set gym leader/elite four/Rivals battles to have full teams and be randomized. Speaking from experience, Randomizers make gen 6 and onward completely fresh experiences thanks to the experience share. That's right, one of the most divisive additions to the franchise is best served in Randomizers of all things.

Then you get to the stuff only the devs could do. Want to plan your own dexit? Did gen 4 kill your parents and you don't want to deal with the memories? You could omit an entire generation, among other things, easily. You could reroute your starting town and completely change the flow of the gym leaders. There's so much gameplay opened up if you allow for customization by the player.

I know this is a pipedream and I know that Pokemon had the market cornered on "regressive progression" from game to game, but with Snap being announced I'm daring to dream again and it just be such a good turnaround for them.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were the best 3DS Pokemon games

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:10 PM PDT

Gen 6 is often swept under the rug, and while XY definitely has its glaring flaws, the Gen 3 remakes that followed definitely deserve more praise, and having replayed them, I feel like they're honestly the best of the 3DS Pokemon titles.

As someone who never grew up playing the original Gen 3, being able to experience a modern retelling of the Gen 3 story with extra features was a very fun experience.

I'll start with the music. ORAS has probably the best music out of the 3ds era. While XY and SM/USUM had really good tunes, ORAS definitely brought it home with its remastered score. Every song in the game is fun to listen to, and it was the first game that I actually bought the soundtrack for. I love the quirky, yet cool rival theme. I love the theme for the fight against Wally at victory road and how it symbolizes his growth. I love the spine-chilling Primal Groudon/Kyogre theme and how it has bits of the original theme. I love the intense otherworldly theme of Deoxys. Zinnia's theme is probably my favorite fight theme in all of Pokemon with its violins. The Team Leader theme with its drops and riffs. The soundtrack is just so fun to listen to overall.

The gameplay was also really good. While the story was nothing too much to write home about, I do like the modern and expanded retelling of the classic Gen 3 story, and keeping Poke Marts and Centers separate was a nice touch and homage to the original, and the addition of the QoL changes introduced in XY allowed for a smoother experience. I loved the addition of new Megas such as Lopunny, Beedrill, Sharpedo, Camerupt, Rayquaza, and the starters. While I wasn't too fond of contests, it was nice to see the addition of Lisia and Cosplay Pikachu. Being able to fly around the Hoenn region on Mega Latios/Latias with the Eon Flute is something I really wish was in future games. Secret bases were fun to make and explore.

The post-game was phenomenal, a vast improvement over XY's abysmal post-game. The Delta Episode was a really good side story, there were so many more legendaries to catch (with them having their old themes to boot), and while there unfortunately wasn't a Battle frontier, they did include a remastered Frontier Brain theme as a nice homage in the Battle Chateau.

And while yes these games are still not perfect, they're still extremely enjoyable and some of my fondest Pokemon memories come from ORAS battling and trading my old friends to whom I miss dearly, and I still remember my team of Hydreigon, Shiny Lopunny, Nidoking, Electivire, Staraptor, and Gallade, half of which have since made it to Sword.

In conclusion, ORAS is a fantastic title for the 3ds era of Pokemon, and is easily in my top 3 Pokemon games of all time alongside SoulSilver and Ultra Sun

    Pokemon Does Not Understand Nostalgia

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:15 PM PDT

Nostalgia is not showing a montage of trading in games to get me excited for a League of Legends rip off. Nostalgia is not giving me the same experience 3 times. Nostalgia is not pandering to one part of the franchise (gen 1). Nostalgia is not something that should be forced down our throats to make us buy a game. PCI should stop using nostalgia as a sales device. (This is just my opinion and I would like to hear yours)

Gen 9 should have level scaling trainers and Pokémon

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:36 AM PDT

I know a lot of people are against level scaling but the benefits it could bring are:

    • having the wild area be the entire map replacing the linear routes, this would also let the player challenge any gym at any time as the gyms wouldn't be level gated.

    • it would force players to use strategy instead of levelling up past their problems.

    • people might argue that level scaling would make levelling up your Pokémon pointless but that wouldn't be the case as each time you level up you unlock new moves and evolving makes your Pokémon stats better.

    • the wild area in gen 8 feels lifeless without random trainer, if you had level scaling trainers in the wild area it would feel less lifeless.

    Pokemon in real life.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:16 AM PDT

I honestly wish that pokemon were real, everytime I watch the anime or play the games, i always have that feeling that makes me feel happy taking care of my pokemon or watching them in the anime doing silly things. I know that if they would exist the world would be in a bit of chaos but still, to live in a pokemon universe would be amazing.

So, I decided to go back to good old Gen 1. Pokémon Red.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:08 PM PDT

It's got some pretty ugly sprites.

But I actually am astounded at how many branching paths there are in this game. You can do all kinds of things out of order, like skipping Erika and going straight to Koga.

The game really opens up once you reach Celadon City and get a drink to the gatekeeper at Saffron.

It's really quite something. I never fully appreciated this when I was little.

Most of all, It's got adventure. I never felt as if the game was pushing me into a certain direction. I was having an adventure of my own. That alone puts Gen 1 above Gen 6, 7, and 8.

I'd say Gen 1 is overhated now... but I do agree that Gamefreak exploits Kanto far too much these days.

The original games are still worth playing. In fact, I wish Modern Pokémon would keep this style of play. It's definitely perfect for kids and adults.

RBY and FRLG are the best ways to experience Original Kanto, and probably should have remained the only ones.

Elite Four but they’re specialised in a region!

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:03 AM PDT

Hey y'all, in my fantasy pokemon game, the elite four would be specialised in a region, instead of an element, and the champion would be specialised in the new region. (Since elements are already used for gyms anyways!)

So, what pokemon would this kinda elite four have ? They can even use starters - Gimme ur suggestions!

Here are mine for the first four -

Kanto: Pidgeot, Snorlax, Alakazam, Gyarados, Arcanine, Dragonite

Johto: Steelix, Ampharos, Crobat, Kingdra, Houndoom, Tyranitar

Hoenn: Slaking, Hariyama, Milotic, Absol, Metagross, Salamance

Sinnoh: Rhyperior, Togekiss, Tangrowth, Magmortar, Electivire, Gallade, Garchomp

What pokemon team of six would you have in real life?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:42 AM PDT

When I say this, I don't mean the most OP team you can think of. I mean pokemon that you love, that is cute, stuff like that. Don't go on saying that your favourite pokemon are all fucking legendaries. That could work out but is unlikely. Let me know in the comments!

Unpopular Opinion? Dragalge is my favorite dragon type pokemon.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:21 AM PDT

My favorite dragon type designs are Dragalge, Sliggoo, Applin, Vibrava and Kingdra. My least favorites are ones like Raquaza, Salamance and Mega Charizard with my least favorite of all being Flapple. I understand why they could be cool (except Flapple) but they just have no appeal to me at all.

(Here's the part where you tell me my opinion is wrong or I'm just trying to be quirky.)

What pokemon would you hire to make your job IRL easier?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:45 AM PDT

I'm a carpenter and was thinking the other day about how I could make work quicker and easier with pokemon. What would be useful on site and what specific traits of a pokemon I could use to speed things up. If you could hire a team of pokemon to help you with your work, who would you hire? I came up with:

Excadrill- for all digging needs. Whip up a trench, dig stump holes, level an area. Agile enough to get around site without taking up too much room.

Conkeldurr - brute strength, general labor around site, can easily carry heavy beams and steel. Perfect for demolition.

Megnezone - can provide power on site and eliminates the need for a crane for steel as it can easily push or pull steel and float it up to where I need.

Scyther - all cutting needs, slicing beams, cutting studs etc. Replaces the drop saw.

Castform- climate control and change the weather when I need it. If I'm working outside, I want nice sunny days. If I'm inside stuck upstairs, I dont want it too hot. If I'm marking out lines, I dont need no rain!

What are your thoughts about the Crown Tundra map? [Spoiler]

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:24 AM PDT

Now that it's finally released and there are numerous videos on You Tube where the map has been dealt with (aDrrive for example).

So south of Galar there are several circular areas that form the Crown Tundra, but the area is not in the shape of a normal land area and you yourself have to explore and map this open area.

I think that has been an exciting solution, that the Crown Tundra is uncharted.

Gen 8 is set in the United Kingdom. Base game Galar is England (and maybe a little Wales.) The Isle of Armor is shaped off of Northern Island. The Crown Tundra is Scotland.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:48 AM PDT

Geography lesson for everyone who may not know. The United Kingdom is made up of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. There are a few extras (like Isle of Man), but these four are the big boys. Ireland (not Northern Ireland) is a country of its own and most likely isn't being represented in this unless Gamefreak decides to throw accuracy completely to the wind. I'm sure some folks will want to argue some details on this, but this is the gist of it. Everything we will be experiencing in Gen 8 is based on the United Kingdom.

I keep hearing people talking about the DLC, even on YT, and saying the "Isle or Armor is the Isle of Man" and one even said "The Crown Tundra is going to be like Iceland!" Nooooo. Base game Galar is England and MAYBE some Wales. (Honestly though, I think they just gave Wales the shaft for the most part which really sucks. It would be amazing to see Welsh identity reflected in Galar as well.) They may have even incorporated wee bits of southern Scotland too into the base game, but not all of it.

The Isle of Armor is based on Northern Island at least in shape.

The Crown Tundra, especially after seeing the map leak from data mines, is clearly Scotland. You can see roughly Edinburgh, Glasgow, and maybe even Inverness and the Orkneys in its layout. (Much of) Scotland is the mountainous highland area of the UK so it all fits the theme too.

I don't mean this much as a vent, I'm not frustrated, but I want those who don't know to be more accurate in their discussion of things. "Northern Ireland" was pretty fun. This fall it will be awesome to visit "Scotland" proper. Don yer kilts, laddies, I think this will be the best part of the game yet.

My Pokémon teams for each game I played. My first adventure in 2000, Pokémon Blue.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 05:16 AM PDT

    https://imgur.com/gallery/FqzHzOH

Pokémon has always been one of my favorite franchises, video games, card games, etc. of all time. My first Pokémon game was Pokémon Blue in 2000, I recieved it and a Game Boy Color for my 4th birthday, and this was my first ever team with my favorite Pokémon of all time, Blastoise, and my favorite Electric Type, Raichu.

Looking back, all of my teams were fairly well rounded, although I got lucky because I picked all of my Pokémon based on aesthetics from watching the anime religiously. Turtles are my favorite animals, so to have one as a starter that evolves to have cannons is magnificent.

I loved the episodes in the anime where Jigglypuff is stuck in the Blastoise's cannon, The March of the Exeggutor Squad, Beach Blank-Out Blastoise, The Battling Eevee brothers, the episode where they show that a Dragonite is a delivery Pokémon, and where Ash's Pikachu battles Brock's Onix and Lt. Surge's Raichu. They're most likely what I picked my team after.

After talking to my friend who didn't grow up with the video games, I decided to make collages of my first-run teams for each game I played. It gave me a strong sense of nostalgia, and reminded me that no matter how much Pokémon changes (or doesn't change) I'll always have many great memories with these games. Not all of the Pokémon on my teams are present in Sword & Shield, but that's ok, there will always be new Pokémon to train and make even more memories with.

If this kind of post is recieved well, I'll post the rest of my games and their teams.

    Who is YOUR Starter Pokemon?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 04:45 PM PDT

And I don't mean, "out of the 24 starter Pokemon, which is your favourite?", I mean out of all Pokemon which would be YOUR starter? Which part of the evolution would you have got it at? Would you evolve it all the way? Can it g-max, mega evolve, z-move? Add anymore details you like as well, or just be like "I'd have a Gulpin" and leave it at that.

What if that old fire emblem and pokemon pitch actually came to fruition

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:58 AM PDT

for those who don't know tokyo mirage sessions was originally a pokemon X fire emblem before, but it later became pokemon conquest and later on fire emblem cross with shin megami tensei instead and developed by atlus.

People would immedietely say pokemon conquest...but let's be more creative, i say it would try to turn the fire emblem universe actually fuse with the pokemon universe.

a reverse pokemon conquest, where is fire emblem is the base universe but pokemon is the gameplay, so it would basically be a turnbase pokemon RPG but is set in the medieval era starring marth or more likely chrom's timeline because awakening.

Why did emerald replace Steven with Wallace?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:51 AM PDT

Steven just feels way better honestly. Instead of the champ being somebody who consistently helps you out on your journey its some guy who only appears 90% of the way into the game. What's even worse is Steven is forced into some cave that most players aren't gonna go back to. But honestly, the worst part of this is that it could've been fixed by like I don't know maybe changing the story so Wallace could've been in the games earlier instead of Steven?
