Free Pokeballs in R/B/Y testing

So recently a youtube video I saw casually mentioned that you can get 5 free Pokeballs from Oak after the second rival fight, which was the first I'd heard of it. So I fired up my copy of Blue and did a little testing with it, and the results were genuinely fascinating. Not only is that true, but the conditions that have to be met are so specific, that I can't imagine almost anyone meeting them naturally. In order to get the free Pokeballs from Oak you have to:

-Have beaten the rival fight next to Viridian City.

-Have not gotten the Boulder Badge.

-Have not obtained any Pokeballs at all, either by buying them or finding them on the ground.

This means that not only do you have to beat the second Rival fight with your solo starter Pokemon, a task that requires more than a bit of grinding at the start, but you also have to have immediately returned to Pallet Town and talk to Professor Oak, something that you would have no reason to do and the game gives no indication of. It's wild that this event is even in the game given how obtuse and difficult it is to trigger!
