DLC Is Better Than Getting a 2.0 Game One Year Later.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:24 AM PST

EDIT: Preface, since some people don't read very well - I am not implying that Paid DLC is a good thing or not to hold GF accountable for their underhandedness -- just that this is better than what has previously been done. I saw a lot of people freaking the fuck out about the words "paid DLC" saying that the franchise has stooped even lower as a result of paid DLC, but it's simply not true when you consider that previous generations have always had paid DLC masquerading as a new game with minimal actual new content being added!

When we paid $40 for Diamond and Peal, we paid another $40 to start the same story over from a clean slate, get O-form Giratina, and the Distortion World.

When we paid $40 for Black and White, we paid another $40 to start (almost) the same story over from clean slate, and got new forms of Kyurem. Okay okay, I'll take back what I said about BW2, they were good sequels.

When we paid $40 for Sun and Moon, we paid another $40 for the same story with a minor change to the climactic part, Necrozma forms, and Ultra Wormholes.

    ---------------------

We paid $60 for Sword and Shield, and we'll be paying $30 for what would have been full priced 2.0 versions of the same game.

Instead of paying another $60 for the same game, starting from scratch, and minimal new content, what we are getting is DLC for truly new content which includes new maps and entirely new Pokemon.

Yes, the idea of patching in new pokemon through paid DLC seems very EA of them, but I feel that we're going to get a lot more new content than we would have in a 2.0 version without paying the full price of a new game, and I get to play it from the game where I have just completed my Pokedex and obtained the shiny charm.

I don't know, it's not ideal, but I feel like I'm coming out ahead in terms of the investment as compared to previous generations.

EDIT: I see the perspectives of the Pokemon fan who holds out for the third version/2.0 version without purchasing the initial release for the generation. I can see how this may be worse for that kind of person.

If you're like me and buy the initial launch of every new generation and end up purchasing the 2.0 version later, this is the better deal - this is the perspective I am speaking on and I'm guessing that the majority of Pokemon fans fall in this category because most people want to play Pokemon when it launches.

    EDIT 2:

I'm seeing a lot of "$80 versus $90, how is this the better deal?"

Don't forget that in that $80 for buying D/P then Platinum or Sun/Moon then Ultra, what you got in terms of content was playing through the main story two times, only the second go-round you have a minor tweak to include a new Legendary or form.

For the $90 on SwSh plus Expansion pass, you have the base game, but the would-be 2.0 game content is isolated and self-contained instead of being shoehorned into a second playthrough of the main story.

This is just conjecture, but this DLC appears to be far more plentiful in terms of how it adds to and refreshes the gen 8 base game versus how much a 2.0 version added to previous gens.

Can we agree that DLC for new mainline Pokemon games should just be norm for future generations.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:10 AM PST

there are a few reasons why I feel like DLC for both SWSH and future generations is a great idea

    1. it would add surprises even after the game is released, mainly it a good way to show off brand new Pokemon without people data mining and finding out out about mystical or any new Pokemon within the game data a year or 2 prior to the time they are release.
    2. speaking of mystical Pokemon event, maybe game freak could make mini dungeons/ special areas for these mythical Pokemon like they did in gens 3 through 5. I know for many people that just receiving a mythical from the guy at the Pokemon center is kind of underwhelming, so with DLC, they can create a small area for these Pokemon in order to be obtain.
    3. DLC can also expand on the story/ lore of that generation. For me, this is the most promising aspect about this new expansion pass for SWSH since the "main plot" of these games were underwhelming, especially compared to gen 7 and gen 5 story. So having a new story with new character could make up for a rather lackluster that SWSH had.
    4. there is no need to make an Ultra/ Platinum/ 2 version. while these version are generally the better version of that generation, I would rather spend $20 for dlc than buying a $60 game which is basically a glorified expansion pack.

overall, those are just a few of my initial thought about DLC for SWSH and for future Pokemon games

if there is any other good reasons, feel free to comment below?

    Clearing Up DLC Price

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:02 AM PST

So less misinformation gets spread, the Expansion Contains BOTH Isle of Armour and Crown Tundra. There is a version for Sword and Shield, EACH costing 30USD. It is NOT that price for each part of the DLC, so if you have only one copy of the game you only pay for one expansion pass.

I guess that was him just trying to do damage control back when it was leaked we were only originally getting 400? Not sure why they had to lie about it though.

PSA: $30 dollars gives you BOTH DLCs, not just one.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:13 AM PST

Seems to be a misconception that's it's thirty dollars for each dlc separately. Honestly $30 dollars for both full sized DLCs is MUCH better than a full priced, slightly upgraded third installment. I don't understand the blatant hate going around this sub right now that gamefreak is getting for introducing paid DLC that's been around forever. Honestly I'm hyped! The new versions of the legendary bird trio look AMAZING, I cannot wait. Color me impressed for once.
